I'm a relative newbie to wargaming, having played only a little Panzer
General on the PlayStation a while back, and I'd like to start anew. I'd
appreciate the group's recommendations. Here's what I'd like to try (for
a WindowsME PC):
turn-based
tactical or operational scope
ancient setting
Thanks for taking the time to read this and respond!

The "ancient" part is the tricky one :) - but here goes :
Freeware/abandonware :
Hoplites : http://digilander.libero.it/zak965/hoplites.htm
Several others : search for "ancient" at : http://www.the-underdogs.org/
Commercial :
Age of Mythology
Rome Total War (scheduled for Christmas 2004) but you might try Medieval
Total War - great tactical game.

Oops, forgot about these babies - also at the Underdogs (probably) - I've
tried them but found the tactical portion too static compared to accounts
of the real battles they're supposed to simulate. Not bad, but not great.

Decent games, but no PBEM.One caveat:the original games won't run in
WinXP(I'm not sure about the collector's edition....).Probably as good
as is available on the subject for the computer.
Bog, I have great battles of Ceasar and Hannibal and dont use them
anymore. I would like to sell them to you. Both are in good
condition, and have the manuals. How does $10 with shipping included
sound? Send me an e-mail if you are interested.

Legion or Chariots of War.
Chariots of War would be a good place to start, I think. It's turn
based and has an ancient setting but isn't really tactial in scope
since you have to build your armies and then fight. You also don't
have control over your armies once combat starts, you basically set up
orders for your army before combat starts (with partial info on enemy
setup depending on how good your scouting is) then watch the computer
carry out those orders.
Medieval: Total War would be another option but I don't think you can
consider the timeframe (from around 1000AD onward) as ancient. Still,
it's by far the best tactical combat engine out there for the time
period and they are coming out with a version based on Rome. ....
looks like you'll have to wait about a year to get that one though.

Others have mentioned Legions/Chariots of War, and while those are good
games, they are not really tactical or operational (possibly apart from the
battles). I'd like to recommend 'Caesar - Defender of Rome' in the same
genre (strategic scope, but with tactical battles, as I expect Rome: Total
War to be). What it lacks in realism, it makes up for in pure fun.
Most people seem to dislike the failed attempt at throwing in arcade
elements in the game, but you can configure difficulty in such a way that
you'll never have to bother with them, while preserving a healthy military
difficulty. =)
My advice is to get the Amiga version and play with an emulator, to make
sure you get the best sound and avoid all OS interoperability troubles.

How about ISI Game Medieval 2, I've been messing with it for a couple of
years... http://www.isigames.com

Checked it last night - the 1997 collecter's edition runs in WinXP -
sound works ok but I can't get the music to play.

I've got a copy of "Great Battles" on the way.

Hang onto it - chances are it will run on your next machine as it runs on
my XP system.
