SFC: a stupid question about transporters

I'm having trouble understanding the transporter icons. There are 6,
but I see the 3 on the left are colored. Does that represent 3
transporters on the target ship and 3 on my ship, or do I have 6
transporters? If I click on them, the colors change (I think there are
3 or 4 different colors), but I have no clue what I'm doing with that.

Yes, I know I can click on "send all", but I usually get the message
that transporters aren't ready or something like that.

I once had a mission where I had two marines left, and I was trying to beam
the fuckers over to the target ship, and it kept telling me that the
transporters were not ready. When, they were!!! They were repaired, not
damaged. I was beaming through a down shield, and everything.

Finally had to destroy the dude because the transporters were not
transporting!

Anyone care to chime in on the technical info for transporters and what is
necessary to successfully beam marines over to the other ship?
