I played the Julii on hard and won against the gauls (not with the realism
patch applied though). It was very touch and go for a few early turns. The
trick is to take the closest cities as soon as possible to get some cash
coming in to build an army. Very soon you will have to fight a large battle
against 1000 of their warriors. Dont press them on this. Let them come to
you and use your spy to keep tabs on where their armies are. Get a good army
together by attacking small raiding parties so that you build up some
experience. Then sit it somewhere obvious and let the big army come to you
so you fight a defensive battle for 'the big one'. Once you have beaten them
you will be in a good situation to establish a footing in their territory
through the mountains. Dont just sit and wait for another army. Its very
important to be strong and push the battle to them but at the same time
trying to fight defensive battles when you can.

With the realism patch appied things will be much harder becuase you dont
have the all powerful cavalry or archers to help swing those massive
battles. So if you are playing with the patch (probably a much more fun game
to try) you will have to be a very good commander to get past the first few
turns against the gauls.

Its like any war - once youve won the big battle the enemy will have to
retire to regroup and then you should hit them hard and fast and keep up the
momentum.

Never let the computer do your building for you. Make sure you untick the
construction and recruitment boxes on the build screen to allow you to sort
out your own stuff. Try and get a family member there as soon as possible
so you can control taxes too. If the place is rioting and it is not
governed, set it to growth build which will reduce the tax rate and make
people happier. Don't rush to attack every city at once, it is sometimes
worth waiting a turn or two to rebuild your armies. When you take a city
start building the best units available straight away and whilst that is
going on repair the walls and build the best barracks you can. Oh, and
never let the computer auto battle for you unless you have a large
superiority in numbers.

HTH to start off with

Thanks for the tips! But which patch are you referring to? The one that
slows down the units? Also, where are the difficulty settings? I can't
find them. Thanks for any info.

See my other post for details of the latest realism patch version 2.2. Still
the odd bug in it but it adds many changes that I want to see.

This might also be useful to help you get started. It's a strategy guide
from gamespy.
