I find it very interesting that no school was named here. Directly
challenged, yet no proof at all. Neither a topic nor a university.
I'll bet this is a diploma-mill degree.

Diploma mills, for those who wonder, are schools that, for a fee,
will give you a 'degree'. They are not accredited, but it is perfectly
legal to claim that you have a PhD if you have one from one of these
schools. The fact that it's a valueless piece of paper is not a legal
problem. Most larger employers require that a school be accredited
before they will accept a degree.

Anytime you run into someone who is at all reticent about giving you
the school, the graduation date, and the title of their
thesis/dissertation title, be wary. Chances are pretty good that the
degree is junk.

_thats_ riggggggggt. Thank you for clearing that up. Bill and his bogus
librarian bullshit have just about hit rock bottom. Over here, we're all
laughing our asses off. Kinda funny though, some press corp, Take 2 et al have
been to my offices and seen my "diploma-mill" (quoted from another post in this
thread) hanging on my walls. Things that make you go hmmmmm.

An excellent suggestion, that is what was done. We just didn't have to
go to the university since that stuff is available here at work. The
search came up empty. The librarian said the only way he could have done
a dissertation is if it was completed very recently this year. Not one
single Derek Smart has gotten a PhD in computer science so that was not a
problem.

Someone else should investigate this also. That way the habitual liar
might actually have to shut up.

All that diploma means (if that is true) is that Derek got a fake
document.

Derek is still weaving those lies. It's a habit he will never break.

Go ahead and try to erase that truth whenever you can, Derek. It still
came out and everyone knows that you're a habitual liar without a PhD.

What's the matter Derek, did you just forget that lie about an upcoming
book? The word of a habitual liar is worthless.

Thanks but, why do you think I'm going to need luck?
>
> Derek Smart, Ph.D. NOT!

For those of you that are not familiar with what a dissertation is, a
dissertation is required in order to get a PhD at any accredited college
or university in the world. It is a document that the student writes
that describes what work they have done during their studies. All
dissertations ever done are going to be listed in the first couple of
places below. The other items in this list are places to look for
technical papers that would be done while in a PhD program or a post PhD
study. The lack of anything in this category means that Derek was
possibliy never even in a PhD program or dropped out soon after entering
it.

The inescapable conclusion is that Derek Smart does NOT have a PhD. This
is proof in my mind that Derek is a habitual liar that is as comfortable
in his web of lies as he is in reality. Absolutlely nothing he says can
be trusted. If he says he just ate breakfast, it could be a lie. If he
says he has a beautiful girlfriend then, it is probably a lie.

Here is a copy of the note that the librarian sent me. This information
can be used to verify the truth that Derek Smart does not have a PhD.

Bill, Here is where I have searched besides the Dissertations Abstract
Online and Sci Search. UMI- both on line and telephone IEEE and IE(UK)
database from1988 forward.Doesn't seem he has written anything for those
pubs. ACM Guide to all ACM Pubs. no luck OCLC online nothing no books,
dissertation, or papers Stanford Technical papers database Cambridge UK
Technical papers database.

If he would tell you the university where he did his paper I could get
it. I have a funny feeling he has not done one yet and possibly he
doesn't even like to write since I can't find anything .

I will keep thinking where else I could look, but for the moment the
outlook isn't very positive.

Though I've read all the messages, I haven't participated in this
thread, mainly because I really couldn't care less about the flame war
going on; it really has no bearing on the merits of the game itself
and has degenerated into a name-calling contest. And I haven't played
BC3 yet, so I can have no comment on the game play (although I intend
to secure a copy and play it; I've waited over 3 years for it!)

This latest disturbs me, though. It would be very easy for Mr. Smart
to quash his detractors by simply stating the university that granted
his PhD, the year granted and the organization that published the
dissertation. It is a matter of public record at those institutions,
and there is absolutely no valid reason for not declaring proudly the
when and where of it. That he does not do so, is what I find
disturbing. This whole bit about the bet is equally disturbing and,
on the face of it, *appears* to be a red herring. In any event, it
certainly raises more questions than it answers and the perception of
it, in an reasonable or responsible person's mind, would be that it is
evasive, at best.

So, in the interest of putting this issue to bed and moving on to
something more fulfilling - and cogent - I urge Mr. Smart to provide
the details, silence his detractors and let us all move on to
discussing the game on it's merits.

In Derek's case I now know that he did not do a dissertation. The only
question is did he bother to even use one of those diploma mills or did
he just make it all up? While it's an interesting question it doesn't
really matter what the answer is. Derek has been claiming he has a PhD
in every one of his posts. If it's a junk degree or a nonexistant degree
he is still guilty of deceit and lies. I hope he just quietly goes away,
never to be heard from again.

stunning at best. Trust me on this. Funny thing, I never knew Keith
and his colleague were at NASA. Curious, but then again, NASA employs
a host of consultants from all areas of technology. See, beyond BC3K
'Derek Smart, Ph.D.' remains a mystery and all it takes is time to
figure out who I am and why I am. I choose to remain a mystery and so
be it. So, when one decides to make a personal attack on someone's
integrity, it's VERY important that one does the homework. It saves so
much hassles. I have never bothered to push my achievements into the
laps of gamers. I opted to remain 'The BC3K guy' because that's ALL I
wanted to be. I have no desire to be or do anything else. If I spent 7
yrs on BC3K, I consider it a 7 year research experiment and unless you
conclude the experiment, you will never know the results. If BC3K
fails or succeeds when it's COMPLETED, that's the conclusion of the
experiment."

Nope, this is incorrect. Most of the personal attacks have come from
to your arrogance and incompetence. If your arrogance had been backed up by
performance, the number of negative posts would have been seriously reduced.
If BC3K had truly been "the last game we'd ever desire", I suspect 90% of the
posts would have been about the GAME, and the other 10% would have said "He's
a jerk, but it's still a damn good game"

Being a complete jerk WITHOUT a damn good game, you pretty much deserve
what you get.

P.S. Of course, this doesn't mean that Take 2 doesn't deserve the pitchforks-

The abstracts will always be available even when a copy of the
dissertation may not be. Other people have already said they
searched for the dissertation with this name and it came up empty.

One person that emailed me said that the following web site could be used

Derek is just desperately trying to deflect the issue. The issue is
that his PhD is a phony. I was lead to this conclusion before
I even asked the technical librarian for a copy of his dissertation.
She was concerned because it would cost $75 to get a copy. I told
her, "Well, let's see what the abstract looks like before we order it."
I chuckled to myself. Boy was she surprised when her search came up
empty.

What lead me to the conclusion that the PhD was phony is that
Derek is the biggest braggart I've ever seen. It was very
suspicious that he would pass up the opportunity to brag about
his PhD whenever he could. Yet, time after time he was silent
when the issue came up.

When Derek said he was going to piss in that guys mouth and then
the racial slurs, I decided to really try and do something about
getting Derek out of this ng. At that point my interest was more
in getting rid of Derek than getting a few laughs. So, sorry the
PhD threads haven't been too funny on my side. Derek, though
has been making some very funny claims. You know how it goes
with a habitual liar. They believe that they can lie their way
out of any problem. I especially like the changed name bit.

I'm not interested in pursuing any of Derek's false leads. I'm satisfied
if he just disappears, which he's said he is going to do. If anyone
else is interested then more power to you, good luck and I'll be
hoping for a few more laughs before it's all said and done.

In a later post Derek said he was going away for a long time and in yet
another he said he was going away until the next release of BC3K. Some
people may have jumped to the conclusion that it is directly due to this
PhD scandal thing. Will that is not correct, at least not directly.

Here's my theory. What is really going on is very simple. Derek's
tangled web of lies no longer fits comfortably into accepted reality. A
time out is required. This time out will allow him to revitalize psyche.
What is involved in revitalizing his psyche is two things. First, it
will allow him some time to rest and reflect and let it all sink in. In
other words, he can make the necessary repairs to his web. He can
complete the weaving of new threads introduced, like a new name. The
second thing is it will allow time to dampen and soften everyone else's
memory of what has happened.

Here's my prediction. When Derek returns, he will express indignation
and disgust in those "moronic idiots" at his old college that put him
through the great time and expense of getting a PhD and never told him
the college wasn't accredited. He has recently been accepted into a PhD
program in another college (unnamed accredited college). They have
promised him that all the work he did before looks utterly amazing and he
should get his accredited PhD in very short order.

Mighty big thinking, Mr. Huffman. Did you go and have a lie-down

This is a laughable crock of shit. Derek is proud of his work. He
has a Ph.D. I have never heard of you outside this newsgroup. This
is not a forum where people state their entire educational history.

If Derek does name his school it will be at his own choice and when he
chooses. You can come up with theories all you like and state that
it's because he doesn't have a Ph.D. or that it's from a Diploma Mill.
The simple fact is that most of the people on this newsgroup don't
give a toss.

Now I'm willing to quit posting if we can let the whole BC3K stuff die
out. The game is all but fixed. It's certainly playable and the
response to the patches and the manual are favourable. If you still
aren't happy then tough. Play something else and chalk off BC3K as an
experience you won't repeat.

Y'know, it really is a wonderful thing we have Usenet, or else we
wouldn't get wonderful threads like this. I mean, what a boon to
humanity!
One thing I noticed about Derek was that, while he said he refused to be
goaded into action, he did snap back with all sorts of insults and nasty
words -- it would have been a lot nicer of a comeback in the first place
if he just said where the PhD came from. _What_ is with these game
designers? Must be all those long hours spent in front of a computer,
radiation going to the brain... :)

Certifications/credentials are issued in order to be examined on demand.
In todays society all such are considered suspect until demonstrated.

Well, I just checked the Dissertation Abstracts 1861-present on
OVID, and there was no listing for Derek Smart. Would it be under a
name other than 'Derek'?

I have one question. Consider how superior Derek thinks his personal
life is over everyone elses(note previous post of superior girlfriend, cars,
intelligence...), and his obsession with trying to prove this to everyone.

If Derek had a legit degree from an accredited and respectable University,
does anyone else feel that he would be flaunting this at every oppurtunity?
