You talk to one of the weaponsmithing sellers who will give you a
quest to get the gold(mastery) level of the first tier. The first
quest is always just a "go and meet someone" job, not anything hard.
The "gathering" crafts never need quests, but all the "creating" ones
have quests to master each tier.

I've also heard rumours of this, but have yet to stumble on anything to
quantify them. So I've put them down to anti PS sentimentality.
Having said that, I'll be damned if I buy a PS3 as well so I can add it
to the dust collecting pile, who needs blu-ray anyway (is it really that
much better?) :P

More than that I'd think. Hours and hours of usage would be required to
become proficient with the thumbstick style of control you'd need for
quick aiming and targeting. It's something I find very difficult to be
precise with due to the easy at which you can overshoot your target.
Something I don't do with a mouse.

So you're still enjoying WO? I haven't logged back on in a long time...
in fact my free month is probably up and they are charging me now. A
large portion of my MMO friend population is now playing it due to my
initial exuberance over the game.
Sigh, yet here I am levelling up a damn druid in WoW instead because WO

MW will be a good example of what FO3 will play like. I'd try a bargain
bin fps rather than a crpg to see if you can handle the shonky controls.
The actual rpg aspects & menuing will probably be annoying as well on a
console, but the main movement/look controls will the be make or break I
imagine.

You have to take a quest to advance it as Einstine mentioned.
To do so, just go to the novice weaponsmith NPC who is near
the forges and accept his quest.
The only professions that don't require a quest at the middle of
every tier are farming, prospecting, and forestry.
The reason for this I think is to prevent just creating an alt
