I'm surprised no one's mentioned this since Planescape: Torment was so
well loved here (although I wasn't one of those who did, I liked the
floating skull companion, that's about it.).

It's Monte Cook's setting of Numenera, which I've never heard of
before, instead of planescape, though.

I'm wondering how this is going to work (as well with Wasteland 2)
with the previous IP, I haven't read anything about licensing.

You didn't like Nordom, the box guy with the crossbows?

Never heard of it either, but since it appears to have funding, I guess
we'll see someday.

Heh, I DID mention it the other day -- apparently it flew under the
radar :-)

It's being done by Brian Fargo's InExile, and he's managed to persuade a
fair few folk of the original team into working on the sequel. It's
quite a long way off though, at this point.

Wow, I actually read that post and promptly forgot, then found the
game surfing some other stuff.

I believe the answer is mostly "not touching the previous IP for legal
reasons", but I may be confused. I backed the project without doing a ton
of research, basically because I like the people working on it and want
to see what they do.

Are you talking about a video game insteasd of D&D?
I never heard of it before.

Nick Gillispie describes the Obama-era media as "more prone to
being lapdogs than watchdogs." That has a nice ring to it, but it seems
to us the metaphor is a little off. The pro-Obama media are acting like
watchdogs--but watchdogs whose master is Obama rather than the public.

"Planescape Torment" is a famous computer role playing game, that stood
out from the crowd with its very different/unusual story telling.
It can be picked up at www.gog.com

You might call it a classic. Many of us do. Granted, there have been
other crpg since then with quirky storytelling .. but in its day it was
a trailblazer. Particularly remarkable was that you have to make choices
in dialogue that would decide your further options, not always with
easily discernable/predictable results.

"Tides of Numenera" is planned as the spiritual succesor to that game.

It's also AD&D - 2e, somewhat similar to Balder's Gate IIRC.

I vaguely remember seeing a Platescrape Torment boxed set once, but since I
dislike the campaign setting, I did not look at it.

I thought it was a nice change from the Forgotten Realms world that most
D&D games are set in.

Always though Planescape, and especially Sigil: the City of Doors, would
make a perfect MMORPG hub, since those doors literally connect to every
plane of existence. You could hang any kind of zone off that, fantasy,
sci-fi, superheroes, whatever and it's consistent.
