I've just bought Temple Of Elemental Evil in the £5 budget section of a local computer gaming store and I really like it. Problem is, it has loads of bugs which spoil it. I downloaded the patches which are supposed to fix it and also a user made patch. However, when I patch it, the game no longer loads up. The screen goes black for a second and I'm dumped back to the desktop. Does anybody have any idea why this is and if there is a way to get round this problem? I'm running it on Windows XP with Direct X 9c and my system is an Athlon 64 3500 with 1 gig RAM, Nvidia 6600 GT video card and Soundblaster Live soundcard. I'd be grateful for any help. Thanks very much.

On the readme for the user made patch it says you have to have installed the 3rd oficial patch before you install the user made one. I've tried all 3 official patches and the game won't load after I've patched them. At the moment, I'm having to play the game 'unpatched' as that is the only way it will run on my system! This means you can't loot the bodies of the enemies you kill. You have to come back for their loot once the bodies have disappeared. So you have to avoid the random encounters in the wilderness because you can't come back to these areas to collect the loot. This is the most serious bug I've come across so far. I hope there won't be anymore. It's a shame because I find this game seriously addictive. The combat system is the best I've played in an RPG!

Try loading just the first two official patches. I think I remember something about the third one being bad.

Yes I think that's right- see: The Circle of Eight Mod Pack: A Step-by-Step Download Guide THE OFFICIAL ATARI PATCHES Atari's ToEE patch 2 includes all the fixes from patch 1; therefore installing patch 1 is usually not required. However, there have been reports from people who could not install patch 2 without installing patch 1 first. If you experience the same problem, install patch 1, then patch 2. Patch 1 is available here:
You SHOULD NOT install Atari's patch 3. If you have installed patch 3 already and want to get rid of it, just install patch 2 on top of it. ================================================== THE CIRCLE OF EIGHT MODPACK After applying the official patch(es), download and install the latest Co8 release: http://files.co8.org/mods/Circle_of_Eight_Mod_Pack_5.0.0_Final.exe

Thanks for taking the trouble to respond to my posting with your help guys. Much appreciated. Unfortunately, the Circle Of Eight patch says in it's notes that your save games will no longer work. I've put 40-50 hours into the game. I couldn't start all over again. Maybe if I ever replay it with a different allignment then I'll use the patch. I wish game developers in general would make their patches compatible with your save games. This has annoyed me in the past with patches for various games. Who wants to restart from scratch, having to do the same things all over again? Especially when you've already put hour upon hour into the game. I'm not having a go at the people who put the Circle Of Eight mod patch together. I know the modders don't have the same resources available to them that the development teams do and I think the modders do more than enough making their labours available for free, but I wish developers in general would take your existing save games into account. Anyway guys, enough of the rant. Thanks again for all your help.

I did! I must have played the Ironman mode a hundred times.
The initial low-level questing was tedious, but after that it's almost non-stop encounters. Planning, prepping and fighting those was fun in a Hack sort of way.
If the fan or official patches had fixed the most heinous crash/corruption bugs I'd probably still play ToEE. Nothing similar has come along since in terms of major commercial releases.
