This has just been leaked all over in English (even though the official
release was meant to be Jan 5). Why is no one talking about this gem (from
all accounts) rather than that commercial memory-leak console-turd from
Bioware? *boggle*

Damn I'm looking forward to picking that up too! Ahhh must wait for
exams to be over.

Anyway Nos, you got no leg to stand on for this one buddy, DA:O is
farken tops. ;)

If you pirate it and it fucks up then you got no one to blame but
yourself I hate to say old boy. And since when do you listen to someone
like Jonah anyway? :O

My take: because there is no commercial memory-leak console-turd from
Bioware?

I most certainly don't, but he's gone schizoid about the game anyway, you
know love/hate, short trip & all that ;). DA:O will be on my PC by tomorrow,
just to ret-b4-I-most-likely-never-buy. At least I can hang shit on the
fanbois here with authority! >;-p. (& the torrented version with a no-cd is
likely far more stable & 'clean' than any commercial DRM-infested dvd
printed these days, though the one good thing about DA:O seems to be that it
is fairly DRM-free, which is at least 1 point in its favour).

Kinda gotta agree with this. There's alot of Dragon Age that reminds me of
NWN2. Love it or hate it (I quite enjoyed it once it was patched enough and
you got past the first 2 hours) it's certainly can't be anything other than
a PC game. In fact I have no idea how the Dragon Age interface would work on
console? It's very much a mouse and keyboard setup.

And yeah, several hours in and no memory leaks/long loading times or
anything. And that on a 2 year old system. Maybe Jonah should have
defragged?

lol fair enough, I think the reason I mentioned the pirate thingy going
skitzo was because I'm sure I've heard somewhere that *some* companies
introduce bugs to pirated versions which are not seen in the retail
version. I know I've read on web forums before people bitching about
this going wrong and that going wrong, only to read a few posts later
that this was a known problem in pirated copies. Not sure if it was all
genuine or not *shrug*.

I had been up for a LONG time when I wrote that crap after trying to get
in enough study time to not make me feel horrible about playing DA:O so
much :p

I hope you enjoy it and that it's bug free for you. I think you'll
really enjoy it. As a mage I've so far been really impressed with the
voice acting of the characters and the quality of humour some of them
can portray. There's lot of dry wit and snide comments abound,
particularly when you meet a particular warrior NPC near the start.

Not only that the character skill customisation really had me thinking
hard. Which spells to take, which paths to go down, there's lots of options.

On my system loading times are terrible, as reported by others, and probably
there *is* a memory leak. But this game is very, very good: the dialogue is
excellent (even if it doesn't reaches the heights of "Torment"). Much better
than the dialogue Mass Effect in my book. The gameplay is smooth, the
graphics are good and atmospheric, the skill/spells system is very focused
and allows for interesting combos, the inventory management system is clean
and intuitive... I agree that this is the true heir of Baldur's Gate 2.

DA is first game in a few years that made me to wake up early so to squeeze
some more gaming time before the working day begins.

This makes the long loading times all more frustrating, however, since I...
want... to play... NOW!

Well, I just noticed that the external HD where I installed the game was NOT
connected to an USB 2.0 port - because I forgot to install the proper
drivers after a full Windows reinstall *___* Now the loading times are
normal.

The magic defrag that some people claim will make your games run like
new is a placebo. Defrag will do jack-shit.

Jack and shit is about the only two things defragging ever
accomplishes in my experience. If the game has really bad loading
times, it is probably the game, not the computer.

lol, I'm glad you found that, what a crap way to hamper your own gameplay!

As for the memory leak, I've had the game up for about 4 hours solid at
one point without any form of slow down or crashing or extended loading
times and I've only got 2 gig of ram.

I'm not questioning that there is a memory leak, its obviously happening
to a lot of people. It just may be that it's not a universal fault.

Ths thing is not that the loading times are actually bad at first.
They just get a little longer each time you zone. I'm prepared to
believe that it's some sort of memory leak causing this.

It's generally just a result of poor hacking/cracking. Some (very few) devs
bother do put viral-like code in multiple places in their codebase (some
encrypted) to check copyright protection & whatnot throughout the gameplay,
but in the end it's just a speed bump for most decent hackers & they always
win out eventually it seems (2 days after release or 2 weeks, what's the
diff? ;).

Kewl. My mate who pre-ordered the collector's ed just emailed me saying one

Promising to hear (from other than a disreputable 'journo' source ;)
Though I certainly hope it has no root in common with NWN/2 & Bioware
console crap like Jade Empire (haven't tried ME as yet). That would mean
just a couple hours for me & sayonara baby!

She voices a sarcaastic witch (literally a witch).

She gets some great banter dialogue, when paired up with a guy called
Alistair - the 2 of them just bicker constantly.

I'm really liking it too, albeit on the 360. No memory leak, so
loading times are short, but the fights are a little more chaotic than
the PC version due to the different UI combat controls.

Still, dialogue and plot are great, voices, lots of little things to
hunt for, and combat is good, and surprisingly visceral.

Worth buying - have you tried the torrent yet, Nos, see what you think
? ?

Don't tease me - I'm only human! ;)

I started it yesterday & am a bit underwhelmed by the whole tutorial thing
so far. Finished the Fade & back in the mage tower now. Honestly, visually
it ain't much of an evolution on the NWN2 engine from what I can see & I
have ALL details maxed & a monster rig compared to what I was playing NWN2
on (in fact, I think the former looked better imo lol!).

The stat/spell system looks to be quite 'dumbed down' compared to D&D v3+
Ed, which I'm not sure was a good idea on any level, especially for a game
targeted . Don't care what anyone says, you can clearly see the console
influence in many aspects of the game's design, all of which blow. The
combat is clunky & non-responsive at times (at least from what I saw in the
Fade & they should have been very careful about first impressions here).

Anyway, apparently PC crpgs are all about the roleplaying & gameplay, so
I'll reserve my final judgment for a few more hours yet. So far, this isn't
grabbing me or anything special AFAICS, just more Bioware fanboy hype.

At this point I'm hangin in there for Claudia alone. >;-)

It's common enough, I should imagine. Crackers are generally more
interested in their childish ego-trips than in playing the games, so
dropping the odd logic bomb in gameplay is pretty easy to do. The
cracker will get rid of overt obstacles to starting the game, but won't
play through it to find differences between that and genuinely licenced
versions.

It's obviously much easier when the development/publication process is
tightly integrated.

the game, for me, didn't really kick in until about 4 hours in, after
the big Darkspawn battle - you meet Claudia's character after you
finish the tutorial and get to the battle campsite.

Oh, and she's wearing revealing clothes, and the character looks a
little like her. :-p
