i downloaded and played the game namely because it was free. the
graphics initally put me off, but after 30 minutes of playing, i was
hooked. the story and rpg elements are great. its definitely worth
the time to download and you can't beat the price. check it out are

Beware to downloaders, however. I bought the original and solved it, but
the free download seems to be full of bugs in the 4th chapter. Seems
unsolvable. Oh well, it was fun to play through the first third again.

Yes, but in the moment the download page is down. They say it will be a few
days. So save yourself the trouble for now.

What "bugs" in the 4th chapter? This is just the original floppy disk
release, which I played through to completion back in 1993, even
without the patch. The patch, though, corrects some problems which
_may_ crop up, depending on circumstances.
You can get the patch at this URL:

I have a couple of alternate download sites listed on my webpage:
http://www.pathcom.com/~kenl/link.htm
I think they still work.
I must say that I'm impressed. I wasn't sure how much impact there would be
by putting the game free on their site for download. I've seen a fairly
decent surge of discussion on here since it went up. A great marketing ploy
for the sequal; while giving something tangible to the public. Got to give
credit to whomever came up with this one.
Just curious. I've got both the CD and 3.5" versions. Which is on the site.
I'd suppose the 3.5".

I think it is the "crippled" 3.5" version.
It is basically the same, the only things missing are the lines of
speech you get when you meet someone (very short and unclear in the
3.5" version I had, anyway)
I'm playing it and having a blast. Highly recommended to anyone that
did not play it, and even to those that did :-)
As a marketing ploy, I can only applaud it. I was pretty hot on the
sequel, but now I'm drooling!

When you downloaded the freeware version of BAK from Sierra's web
page, was the documentation that came with it (in .wri format)
corrupted? I was totally looking forward to playing this game, having
heard so much about it, but I couldn't access the manual -- all I got
when I opened it was a bunch of arcane symbols, mostly small
'squares.' I used Win 95's WordPad. The game seemed to run fine,
though, so my suspicions of a corrupted download may not be valid.
Did anyone else who recently downloaded BAK have the same problem?

I have on my disk a veeery old floppy version which
I play, and the new free one. I down-loaded the free one to see if
something has been improved. My last save was in northlands
(chapter4?) - I loaded it into free version and played for a short
time. It hung when I tried to drink from the sorcerers well. So I
went back to my old version.
The versions are not identical, the main data file has different length.
BTW, this is still one of the best RPG games. I wonder, if the sequel
is also so good.

This ploy is mainly damage control to cover their stupidity in losing the
sequel in the first place. Sierra has a rather greedy habit of dropping
you like a hot stone if you don't produce an instant hit. The same thing
happened with Quest for Glory. Raymond Feist (author of the Krondor
novels) was eager to do sequels, but when Krondor wasn't an instant hit,
Sierra told him to get lost. Later on when the CD version started selling
through the roof, they changed their mind, but Feist had moved on and he
told them to get bent.
The free release of Krondor, as well as the naming of Betrayal in Antara,
is an attempt to tie together the Krondor game with their non-sequel which
uses the same engine but is not a Krondor game. The are trying to distract
attention away from the official sequel to Betrayal at Krondor, the
upcoming Return to Krondor from 7th Level.
Some people are hoping that we will see two good games come out of this.
Either way, one of the games will have the same engine but not the same
setting or storyline, and the other will continue the story with a
different engine (which will reportedly include real-time combat --
yuck!). Because of Sierra's greed, we could lose out on both counts.

It has to be the floppy version. The CD and floppy versions are the same
except for the soundtrack. The CD has the floppy version plus 60 minutes
of CD (Redbook) music. For anybody who tries the free download and likes
it, I recommend picking the CD version out of the bargain bins. It's going
for $10 these days and the CD soundtrack is the best I have ever heard in
an RPG. You can't imagine the difference it makes (at least for somebody
like me without wavetable). I often pop it in the CD player just to listen
to it.
