Hi Folks,

Not too long ago there was a tread in this NG about realism and that ME109's
had slats and stalls and spins. Well Friday I got my copy of Janes WW2 and
the story begins like this...

I jumped into my favorite plane ME109 and took the darling for a spin around
the airfield, nice rate of climb, checked the fantastic virtual cockpit then
I thought hmmm now for the FM.

Well I tried to induce some level stalls and so leveled out pulled the
throttle and just pulled on the stick to keep the nose level...then I heard
it...a clacking clipping sound and the wings just gently flicked left, right
, left always level and no nasty stall! I thought what gives??? Outside view
explained it all, the automatic slats that the ME109 came with had deployed
and had kept me from stalling. Aha! indeed faithfull to the original, in
high AOA turs the slats again have saved me from spinning out at the wrong
moment as the when you hear the slats deploy it is time to ease off the G's!

P47's tri kilometer! Into battle, one P47 turns infront of me to avoid
another 109 to his right, Aha...just right for me... I twist after him, full
right rudder, half roll to the right and it's a nice deflection shot, I
turned with the larger more powerfull fighter...good AI pilot this guy was,
boxed in and knowing I was on his tail he used his last card he dove!!!! Of
course I dove with him but the P47 powered away...then on the "deck" pulled
out, I chopped throttle and pulled out myself hmmm...damm my 109 response
was slooooow I looked at the airspeed ack!!!! 450+ kts I pulled with all my
might (nearly pulled my Flight stick apart) drop combat flaps, pull, pull,
then it happened...I made a nice ME109 hole in the ground. That AI pilot
must have been laughing all night back at his base.

Ack, P38's!!! A whole gaggle of the forked tailed birds come into view, I
picked the lead of the second flight and twisted to the left for a little
separation, hoping he would keep his course, he flashes past and I am
"reefing around" in the 109, OK he is still in a shallow turn, he climbs and
I close in...it is now an energy battle, he is committed to his climb and I
am on his tail...he slows down and so do I, then I hear my guarantee click
into place...the slats are doing their job keeping me in the air longer than
I would otherwise have.

Then a short burst and white coolant trails from his right engine...another
burst and the canopy flies off, he has had enough, out he goes "hit the
silk". Meanwhile his wingman has taken a fancy for me and I soon see glowing
golf balls wizzing past my canopy, shit! full left rudder, roll inverted and
I split S into safety...I'll live to fight another day.

I am sorry to burden you all with this tale but I wanted to share with you a
really great sim experience...

Cheers

Butch
