I've downloaded the Mig-19 TE file from combatsim.com to practise one
on one engagements and find that I constantly being outmanuvered by the
Mig. I usually launch an AIM outside of its envelope to prevent the Mig
from launching it's missiles until the merge. It flies past and I try to
turn to it but I always loose sight of it. Next thing there's a missile
up my six.

What radar mode should I be in at the merge and what view would you
recommend. Either I'm not turning fast enough or the old Mig 19 is a
better dogfighting aircraft. I try to keep my speed to the recommended
350-450 air speed in the turn but sometimes the speed bleeds off.
I would like to know the details of some of you experts on how to keep
visual contact.

Thanks for any help.

Well keeping your eyes on the bandit is the challenge (among other things).

For me I padlock the bandit ASAP and fly the jet using the canopy cues
(reflections).

It can get a bit confusing flying when your looking out the back of our jet,
but f4 has a feature called "glance forward" which will maintain your
padlock but switches the view back to the HUD so you can get your bearings.

Just look at the size and wieght of the mig though. It's obvioiusly more
maneuverable, so you'll have to find another way. I *think* you might be
able out climb it, so try staying full ab and making huge climbing loops.
It might work, it might not, lemmi know.
