I downloaded the above game to try it but it doesn't appear to have English
speech, only German so I am used to having speech in the BS games and
wouldn't likely play this.It has English subtitles so maybe some people
wouldnt mind just English subtitles. It looks like they planned to have
English voices as a choice as you can choose English or German to play the
game and in one place on their site it says "English voices coming" - but
looks like that was dated in 2009. I hadn't heard of BS 2.5 before fanmade.

I think I have played all the BS games. I liked BS1 and 2 the best but later
ones are good too. I see George's voice is the same George, so thats good.
Don't know if its the same Nico, but sounds like it might be. Should be a
good game.

Hi Mick - It's the same two files as the post from rms except two different
websites. One file is for setup and one is for patch which it says is for
English voices. The hardware requirements are windows 98 and up and I am
using Win XP. It looks like they planned on adding English voices for the
game but never got around to it, and not likely to add English now as the
game is from 2008 or 2009. Thanks anyway. It was worth a try.

I can't get that youtube link to work. It says Youtube at the top of the
black Youtube screen, but no arrow or anything to start the game. I am not a
member of Youtube, maybe that's why it doesn't work for me.

When I click on the above link it goes to the same screen that I downloaded
from Gamershell which was the link I got from the post from rms here, but
it was http://www.brokensword25.com/downloads/vollversion.htm - If you use
that link you will see what I mean. Both links are the same general screen
but each Downloads screen has different links to click on.
This is confusing. As both links go to the same main screen, but Download
sections and where you are supposed to click is not the same.

I must be doing something wrong but I don't know what. I tried quite a few
times to get things to work, but I still just get German. I clicked on
http://www.brokensword25.com/ - in the first section under "Downloads"
(Multilingual patch) its the same patch I downloaded before which didn't
work.
Maybe you could tell me which section and which link you downloaded on
http://www.brokensword25.com/ and which other files you downloaded and which
links and where did you put the files? did you install the patch and the
game in "Programs" ? Are you using Win XP or windows 7? I am using Xp.

On the left hand side there is a 'Download Now' section. Underneath it has -
DOWNLOAD VIA DIGITAL-EXTREME
DOWNLOAD VIA RWTH AACHEN
MORE MIRRORS

If you select more mirrors it take you to another screen that has a list of all
of the
mirrors -

Adventurespiel
Gamershell
Gamona
etc...

Download the main game from one of those.

Further up the page there is a link to the official patch, download that. I
downloaded them onto my desktop (I always do because its easier to find stuff)

Unzip the main game file which will give you the game installer file.
Install the game. Unzip the patch file and copy all of the contents to wherever
you installed the game.

When you run the game you will
get the option screen which will be in German. Click the 3rd button down.
This will give you the option to select the language you want and yes, you
do get both English voices and English subtitles.

I'm using Win 7. I installed the game on my 2nd partition but you could install
it into Programs if you want.

I downloaded that before also and put it in my new folder SBinfo. BTW, you
say above you downloaded bs25.setup.zip to the desktop, so did you also
download the patch file to your desktop in a separate icon than the setup
file?
Did you unzip bs25setup.zip and the patch and extract them in winzip and
install both
in the same folder somewhere on your drive?

Back to the Main page of the game,, I clicked on "official patch" a little
further up from where I clicked on "Gamershell".The patch is
"BS25_patch000_multilingual.zip"
and I put it in the same BSinfo folder where I have "bs25-setup.zip.

So far everything you mention above is the same as I did from the post of
rms -slightly different order but same end result.

When I clicked on bs25.setup.exe which appears as a file after I extracted
the files from bs15.setup.zip
(using Winzip), it installed the game in "Programs" automatically. Then I
extracted the patch files via
Winzip which included language files and a file called bsengine.exe and put
them in the the BS2.5
folder in Programs along with the bs25-setup file.It asked if I wanted to
put BS game on startup menu
and I said No, but I said short cut on the desktop so there is a big red X
on the desktop which says Broken sword 2.5
on the desktop. There is a file bsengine.exe in the folder but I don't know
what its for.

You get them but so far, I only get English subtitles :)

The problem I am having seems to involve the patch.
I wonder if you need Windows 7 to get the patch working for English. I am
using Win XP on my desktop. I have Win 7 on a laptop, but use my desktop
most of the time.

Each time I think this time the characters will talk in English and I will
understand what they say, but they still speak
German -:>) If you see an obvious error I am making, let me know. It's
probably some small thing I am doing or not doing.

What I did was download both to my desktop then create two new folders, put
bs25setup.zip
in one and then patch in the other. I then unzip the game archive to reveal the
installer then double-
clicked that to install the game. Then I go to the other folder (the patch
folder) that contains the patch and unzip that.
Then I copy all of the files from Ive just unzipped in the patch folder to the
place where Ive installed the game. The ones you need to make sure you copy are

bsengine.exe (there will already be a file with this name in your Broken Sword
game folder, just replace it with the
new one)

fmodex.dll (ditto)

lang_en.b25c (This is the English language stuff)

patch000.b25c (Not sure about this one but copy it anyway)

See above. If you put them in seperate folders you will be clear which files to
copy.

Win7 or XP should make any difference. I think you just havent copied the right
files to the
game folder. See the four mentioned above.

Success at last! - I got the voices in English now. I think I did everything
right in the first place as far as downloading, and even though I put both
the setup download and patch download in the same folder, I think that would
have worked out ok, except when I extracted the patch files using Winzip, I
didn't replace all the files in the game install download that I should have
for some reason. This last time I made two folders with game setup in one
and the patch in the other and it was much less confusing. Also, I haven't
used Winzip for a long time and did something wrong with it too, but this
time I got it right, thanks to your instructions.
I knew the problem was the patch, and so did you. I didn't overwrite a
couple of files in the game folder that I should have.

BTW, did you use Winzip to unzip the files, then "extract" to copy them to
the folder with the game install and the other folder with the patch?

The game looks pretty good. I like the graphics. They look exactly like the
original BS game- The colours in the first scene with the flower seller are
beautiful. George and Nico and flower seller sound something the same as
original game. So far, from what I've seen, the creators/designers and the
whole team who made the game, have done a great job - and it's even free
which is even better. BS fans would like it.

Thanks a lot for your help. I can now play the game. And thanks to "rms" who
told us here about the fanmade game of BS (unless you already knew about
it). I had never heard of this fanmade game. But gives me a game to play as
I miss the old adventure games, and replay my favourites now and then.

remember when you had an older system and had trouble playing some games. So
did I back in the day. Thats when I did my own upgrading, but hard a hard
time keeping up with the latest adventure games. Now I have a good system -
for now.

No I use WinRAR. Its a similar program. When you right click on a .zip or .rar
file you get two options added to the context menu. One is "Extract here" which
will extract the archive at its present location. The other one is "Extract..."
which
will allow you to select where you want to extract to. Winzip may have something
similar.

Yes I was still using Win 98 till about 4 years ago when I bought this laptop
which came
with Vista installed. I upgraded to Win7 as soon as it was released (2 or 3
years ago?
can't remember now). Ive also tried the Windows 8 betas but I won't be getting
that. It
doesnt really offer much over Win 7 unless you have a touch screen.

Yes, it was almost worse than figuring out puzzles in a game. I played it on
the weekend -nearly finished. Are you finished it?

There were three things in the game I didn't like, but all in all, it's a
good game and nice graphics and acting is much like the original BS games. I
like the point and click games that you don't use the keyboard. I just
finished re-playing "Relentless" (North American name) -Little Big Adventure
1, in UK and Europe. It's an adventure/action type game made in early mid
90's. I played it when it came out and once a long time ago.its a long game,
and very difficult IMO. Completely different type game than BS
("real" adventure games :). The saved game feature in LB1 is bad, but around
the second half of the game, it saved smaller segments and was more
"forgiving", so if you can get past the early parts of the game, I found the
game interesting and challenging with good acting and some cute characters.
Twinsen's Odyssey (LBA 2) is the sequel and you can save games when you
want. Both games are good with many fans.

Have you played LBA 1 or 2? and have you used Dosbox? BTW, both those games
are available on Gog.com. for $5.99 each (Win XP,Vista and Win 7) which is a
good price and we don't have to worry about mailing the game. Games are
downloadable. I've bought a few games there.

I tried Win Rar a few times and found it more confusing than WinZip. Winzip
has "extract" and "add " and "view". I used extracted but maybe could have
used "add" but if they didn't need any extracting, but wouldn't extract
anyway.

I don't like touch screens. Good that you have a good system now. I bought a
laptop last year. Laptops are much better than they were even a few years
ago. It has win 7 which I don't much care for. But I mostly use my desktop
bought 2.5 years ago. It had Vista in it when I bought it which is OK, but I
installed Win XP which I like better. I used win 98 for a long time too -I
liked it best.

No I havent played them. I have used Dosbox before but I had to buy a new drive
recently
and reinstall Windows and havent got round to putting Dosbox back on. Last game
I played
on it was one of the old Tex Murphy games.

Thanks for posting about the availability of he english voice
pack. I played through it using subtitles a couple of years ago
(in conjunction with playing through the regular series) and it
worked fine, but it is of course better like this.

Thanks to the ones providing the voices and thanks to MindFactory
(no, not *that* MindFactory) for creating the Return of the
Templars game.

If one has fond memories of the two first Broken Sword games but
don't want to replay games already played, or like me do play the
old ones and don't mind more of the same, this game is very good.
One revisits some old locations and meets some old acquaintances
along with new places and people in a new original adventure.

Etal, I finally got the English voice feature working thanks to Mick's
instructions. I started to play it with only English subtitles, but it's
much more enjoyable with English voices if that's the only language you
speak - like me.

Yes, thanks to MindFactory for creating Broken sword 2.5. I thought it was
very well done and the voice of George sounded very much like the original
BS 1 and 2 - can't remember if BS 3 was the same George. Nico sounded much
the same. I liked the graphics . they were much the same as BS 1 and 2.

I do the same. Once in a while I play Broken sword 1 and 2 and played BS 3,
The Sleeping Dragon which I liked but like first two games the best.

Yes, two old acquaintances were Duane and Pearl were in BS 2.5 for a short
time. They look much the same - plump. The flower seller in front of Nico's
apt. looked and sounded the same - flowers in that scene were beautiful
colours.
