How do 3D monitors "work"?

Hi,

I have an eVGA 690GTC vid card. I just read a review in Max PC of the
BenQ XL2420T. I presently have two SamSungs connected to my video
card: A 24 inch and a 27 inch (which is my main monitor). The 27
maxes out at 1980x1080. Both look great but I play my games and do my
work on the main 27 inch monitor (of course). I like and need the
extra space

Can I replace my 2nd monitor with this one and use it for games when I
want to? Wait, I guess it would have to make my system use it somehow
as the default monitor.

Does a 3D monitor also work in "2D"??

I'll defer to others' knowledge on the subject of 3D, but I thought
you had a 680 rather than a 690? The 690 is basically dual 680s on a
card and costs about a grand.

Oops, 680. Sorry.

The active shutter based 3D monitors are great for 2D, because they can
support 120Hz - 60Hz for each eye in 3D, or 120Hz for regular mode. Your
GTX680 should easily handle 120Hz gaming and the difference should be
noticeable.

I think you'll have to make the new monitor, the primary one, if you
want games to open there. I am not sure though.

The monitor you listed is 3DVision compatible but you will need to buy a
separate 3DVision2 kit from nVidia (which normally has a pair of active
shutter glasses, and an IR emitter) Some monitors come with internal
emitters and glasses, and so you just need to buy 3DVision software from
nVidia, instead of the whole hardware kit.

And another $200+ for the NVidia 3D Vision Kit. No thanks. I will
stick with my 27 and 24 inch Samsungs. Screw the 3D stuff. I've
never seen a 3D movie ever except for sample TVs at COSTCO and was not
impressed. Was not enjoyable.

The MaxPC review raved about the image quality though.

Too much $$ for everything. But am curious if I wanted to just use
the monitor for normal use, I would still have to wear glasses?

I've had a try of watching 3D movies and playing games, wearing the
red/blue glasses, on my 2D monitor and I tend to find that the colours
tend to be a bit bland and washed out. It seems to give me a bit of a
sore head so stopped doing it.
I would assume that 3D TVs/monitors and the nVidia 3D kit improves on this?

Yes, dramatically. Have you not been to one of the recent 3D cinema
films?

Nope. Not been to the cinema in years. I'm a stay at home hermit type...;)

Well, current 3D tech has its shortcomings and its detractors but it's
a big step up over red/cyan 3D specs!

Me too! If John Wayne isn't in it, I am not going to watch it :-)
