I bought a retail copy of this when it first came out. For some reason
I've never even gotten around to installing it, let alone playing it.

I think it might be down to the fact that I am heartily sick of
conventional war based FPS.

I did wonder if I'd bought it at some time, but I didn't recognise the
screenshots. I'll have to wait until tomorrow as will have to install
overnight.

I played through it on the 360 and quite enjoyed it. Getting to
control remote control helicopters with missiles is great fun.

Created by the same team that developed BF2 (and desert combat) Trauma
Studios who were all 'released' when BF2 was launched.

Frontlines tanked though.

I've installed it and downloaded the patches. I'll give it a whirl
this weekend. It's mildly annoying that there doesn't seem to be an
aggregate patch, but never mind.

GRAW2 had some enjoyable drone flying aspects to it. I don't think
anything will beat Project Eden for that kind of thing though. Now
there's an underrated game that really should have been the subject of
a sequel.

Be warned that there is around 2GB of patches for this game. It
appears that you have to install them in the right sequence (oldest to
newest) rather than there being just one combined patch.

It shirley does.

The retail game is on 2 DVD's so presumably the digital version is a
hefty download. On top of that I'm assuming that there will be an
equally hefty patching process once the game is installed.

My version is still being patched from 1.0 to 1.10 using the
downloaded patches. That's been going for a good 5 minutes now and
it's only at 53%. There are 3 more patches to apply after that (69MB,
959MB and 929MB respectively).

In fact, given that the first patch was 920MB that makes the total
patch size nearer the 3GB mark.

You're not missing much. I never bought it but played a friends copy for
a bit and it's average quality at best.

This game suffered from Shit Title Syndrome. Even if it was good, it
got mixed in with other horribly named games that also happened to be
bad. Turning Point: Fall Of Liberty, I'm looking at you!

If you're going to spend 2 years making a game, it'd be wise to spend
more than half an hour to come up with a catchy name.

Gee, for me, it's $3.75 in local dollars, which could be US$3 ! But
still, I am not buying it... I still have lots of unfinished games,
and some of them are unplayed !

I took a vow not to buy the new games (e.g. Brink, Borderlands, CoD6,
Bioshock 2) without finishing them first.

The fact that I quite enjoyed Turning Point should give a clear

It was a craptastic shooter that ticked all of the craptastic boxes
that indicate craptasticness. It was even more craptastic than
Legendary: The Box which was pretty craptastic as well.

I would expect that FFOW would be in a different league to those two
games.

I rather enjoyed it. It was a good mix of "realistic" combat versus
the usual run-n-gun action standard to FPS games, something I find
very few games achieve. The maps are interesting and the weapons
-especially the drones- are a lot of fun. I never tried the
multiplayer, but it looked like it would be quite enjoyable too.

The big problem was a dearth of content. The single-player campaign
was a tad on the short side, but not so much you felt ripped off.
Unfortunately, the developers never got around to releasing the SDK in
a timely manner; this, this, coupled with the limited number of
multiplayer maps, meant that the game quickly fell off the radar. It's
a shame, too; I think the community really could have enhanced this
title.

I recommended it to fans of the genre when it was full price (more
casual gamers I suggested wait until it drops in price a bit); for $6
US it's definitely worth picking up.

I played about 45 minutes of this game. It's not a bad game although
it is the type of game that I would only play in small doses.

There are a few issues with it that stick out for me.

Firstly, some of the weapons are ridiculously overpowered. The rocket
launcher and grenade launcher immediately spring to mind.

Secondly, the game runs like absolute shit for me with frequent
pockets of severe frame rate loss and lots of (what seems like) very
fleeting freezes. Considering that the graphics are hardly stellar,
this is a little surprising. I'm guessing that this is caused by the
large maps.

One other thing, there is no support for 1440 x 900 resolution which
was also a bit craptastic considering it's a fairly new game.

This is ruining it for me. I play crysis with everything on high but I
have to drop the rez for this?? I'm guessing open space and NVidias
physics incompatibility with my ATI card. Just started trawling around
and there is some suggestion that PowerDVD is also an issue... what?
One of the most popular programs on a PC that has been around for many.
many years is causing the problem? Arseholes

Same here. It's not a sufficiently good game for me to accept having
to tolerate lower graphical detail and resolution just for it to be
playable.

I've uninstalled it and put the DVD's back in the case and on the
shelf with all the other games that I probably won't ever touch again.

True about the intro - makes you wonder when, not if, this will happen.

Finished the game in one day, although I've played it for 11.3 hours (isn't
Steam great!) against less than 8 for COD MW2.

The graphics aren't as good as COD, but it was more fun in some ways. It
could have stood another few hours for sure, but I'm looking forward to the
multiplayer - hopefully the servers will be populated after the recent
offer.

Overall, I would have been happy to pay 20 for this game and for 3.74 it
was a genuine bargain.

Anyway, back to L4D2, which I am absolutely loving.
