There was a not long ago time when every game with very few exceptions was
succeeded by an add-on or follow up expansion pack...extra levels etc.

But they seem very rare now ...COD 4 (& COD2) ..CRYSIS ...the original
FARCRY was advertised for one & some release dates around but it never
happened.

Why the reluctance ??

It must be a good straight forward way to make money ...the Game engine is
there ..most of the publicity is done on the original release ..

Yeah, you took the words right out of my mouth. They just call expansion
packs episodes now and sell them full price by including other stuff...

If it includes 'other stuff' (I guess you mean games) then how can you
say that one game is full price?

Inclusion of other stuff, changes the product. Valve didn't sell
Episode2 for full price.

In fact, they are now selling Episode2 separately and someone who
didn't have any interest in TeamFortress2 or Portal could have waited
until now.

Valve definitely had profit margins in mind when they released Orange
Box first, instead of its components, and if it works then all the
more power to them. By the way, Orange Box is one of the only few
multi-platform games that sold a few million copies with majority of
sales coming from the PC front.

I think we had this discussion here already. Forcing a MP only game on top
of a SP expansion pack to raise the price is a joke for people that don't
play MP games, like myself. Although this is finally no issue anymore
because the Orange Box compounds are available seperately, I bet quite a
few players couldn't wait and paid for something they would never play.
And I'm not starting on the topic of re-buying HL2 and EP1 either ;).

Nope, you'll just keep bringing but calling the additional 5 games in
the box 'other stuff'.

Portal was great, I agree, but TF2 was MP only WITHOUT even some bots for
SP gamers and who didn't play HL2 and EP1 already? I mean we are talking
about expansion packs here. Do you remember any expansion pack that forced
you to buy the game it was an expansion to all over again, with the only
excuse that you could give the second version away for free? I don't. If
there were indeed combinations of orginal game and expansion they normally
came out much later for players that indeed missed the first release. IIRC
EP2 was the first game the other way around for maximising profit reasons.

This is going off more into the realm of Valve's sketchy shovelware
practices rather than expansion packs. Even before STEAM they were
doing it. How many different bundles of Half Life were there?

I'm actually kind of in line with your opinion on the Orange Box... I
bought it for all the Portal hype, then didn't even wind up liking the
game. I've played about 10 minutes of TF2 and got bored with the ultra
linear HL Episode (not unexpected based on my boredom with HL2 and
Episode 1, but I had to try).

What ended up being the bundle deal of the year for a lot of people
ended up as my worst purchas of the year... Three games I don't play
and two more I already had for 50 bucks. LOL

I was a bit "meh" with most of the Orange Box, but Portal made it all
worthwhile.

That opinion I can live with. If someone's tried a game and didn't like
it I respect that. And if they normally like the same kinds of games I
like then I'll sit up a bit and listen more closely - it may colour my
thoughts on whether or not to buy the game. Not recognising that it
'was' game bundle of the year for lots of folk is arrogant at least IMO.
I loved all three games plus my daughter loved the gift of the two
others. At the same price for all 5 as I paid for COD4 I truly believe
I had a bargain. Whether or not each one was long enough then I'd say
no. But it was certainly at least twice as long as the 3hrs Werner was
alluding to.

Strange but there are times when almost I miss the comedy of his rants

"so you pirate cause i'm against it?
btw i also think murder is wrong so would you murder anyone only to
provoke me?

its unbelievable the importance people give me i'm simply one more pc
gamer among many, nothing more

each one of us in this group is nothing compared to pc games but even so
you do things cause of me and not cause of what we are all here for
which is pc games with this you are saying i am more important to you
than pc game overall so truly am i more important to you than pc games?
these steam lovers are really weird and can we only blame steam for this
weird behavior?"

Steam was certainly the cause of his wierd behaviour :-)

I appreciate this is about action games, but thought you should see this.
IKEA is offering an 'expansion pack' for the Sims game. Advertising to the
max. I know they alread advertise in football sims and racing games, but
this is a deliberate move into the gaming space. Second Life does similar.
