Dark Forces scared of Descent etc?

I wonder if the reason why Lucas Arts held up the ship date of Dark Forces
was because they were scared of all the other 1PP games that were coming
out on the market? Perhaps they wanted to differentiate their game or
implement some of the stuff they saw in the other titles. Since their
ship date is sometime late Jan or Feb, there is certainly time to do this.

Let's hope they don't make a practise of this, DF was supposed to be out
in Oct/Nov, and yet we still don't have even a demo of it.

Lets hope they *DO* practice this! The more goodies they can chock into a
game, the better. I could care less if a game is delayed an extra four months
if they decided to see what the others had to offer first. They know people
will buy it regardless if it comes out even a year late, so they can do what
they want to it. Lets just hope it isn't another Zelda 2 screwup.. That
Nintendo games was about 8 months late and it sucked so hard when it was
finally released.

If the programmers read these newsgroups its a good bet that they know what
people want outta games now.. Full soundcard support (for EVERYTHING), OS/2
support, Windows support, low memory restrictions, fast routines, great GFX,
etc, etc, etc. Just missing one of these and deciding to implement it could
take a month in itself to implement.

Lets just hope the delay is for the better and not for worse.

I don't think they're purposefully holding it back because they're scared
of Shareware game distributors. LucasArts makes some of the best games,
and likely whatever time they're taking is time well spent. Just look at
ROTT... It was rushed for Christmas and everyone's complaining about the
quality... A couple months more is acceptable, compare it to Mechwarrior
II...

But I do agree that companies should keep games back to make
improvements. Also if when they do release the games there are no bugs
then it is also worth it. I also think that coomputer programmers must
be the stupidest people on the planet because they continually release
crappy games, with no regard to what players demand.

I didn't say *I* wanted to, I was explaining what other people want out of
games. Obviously there are TONS of people wanting Windows support nowadays,
just look at the 'Where is WinDoom??????' treads that keep coming up
everywhere. People want games nowadays to be completely slick, run in any
environment, and never puke. Some of us will be happy with just a slick
game, but that doesn't make up the majority of people methinks.

LucasArts told me that they have indeed signed off on the DARK
FORCES demo, but since the company is closed this week, I expect
we won't see it uploaded until next week. I'm sure it will be
out before CES, but they would be crazy not to hand out the demo
to everyone that stops by their booth. Here's a bet that they're
going to do a CD demo with a nice sparkly intro sequence too;
just a guess though.

Happy Holidays!

I find that statement laughable. When I went on summer vacation in June,
RotT was due out in August or September

Windows support? Low memory ristrictions? you have an oxymoron there..
since the dawn of time, all windows games besides minesweeper and
solitaire forget to include the fun, and have bad memory requirements.
Besides.. DF is a LUCASARTS game! I don't beleive that the have ever made
many bad games, as opposed to apogee!!

Windows, the damn best $90 solitaire game ever developed!

We do now, And it was well worth the wait! Hope it comes out soon.

Has this been the best 2 weeks for 3-D games? Wow ... Keep em coming! :-)

Are you denying that ROTT was released for Christmas, and that the game
was not yet complete? If you're laughing at Apogee for being so tardy,
keep on chucklin' bucko, otherwise get out of my face...

The DF demo is really quite pathetic, really. Nothing but a
substandard Doom clone with Star Wars graphics and music.

I did like the map-on-top-of-the-screen, though. Nice touch.

Lucasarts had been saying that the demo would come out a month before
the actual game. That's not soon enough--the demo exceeded my expectations.
If you're wondering whether or not to download the whole 10MB mess--do it,
the cutscenes at the beginning and end add a lot to the storyline that's
suggested in the demo, particularly the dforces3.zip 5.8MB trailer.

(ftp.uwp.edu:/pub/incoming/demos/dforces*.zip or
cs.mcu.edu:/incoming/dforces*.zip, 3.3MB required, 10MB total)

I just saw Dark Forces, and holy shit does it rock! The game is superior to
Doom (not to knock Doom, considering it is over one year old). You can look
up/down, the other people say things, you fire laser shots, you can jump and
crawl EASILY (does not make the game complicated, like System Shock did). The
map can be displayed HUD style, so you see it and your running at the same
time. Too much to say. Get it at: ftp.gatech.edu pub/submissions. There is
also a nice storyline with awesome voices/sound effects and graphics.

I had just got done playing modem (well, IHHD) descent for 4 or 5
hours.

I didn't like Dark Forces.

Problems include doors ook like air vents, walls, whatever, but not
doors. I was (and am) wandering around just hitting everything that
looks vaguely like it MIGHT be a door... I don't like the swing-the-weapon
style of head bobbing because it looks *so* fake...
I'm totally stuck after getting the red key and hitting the switch up there.
Someone clue me in, please...

Of course it's entirely possible that I just really suck at the game.

Yea, but it had been done before, though not in a PC game.

Bullshit. Life doesn't have a CLI (Command Line Interface). From birth
we learn to interpret our environment through our senses. Principal
among these senses in higher primates is sight. We learn to control our
world by manipulating objects in that world. A GUI is an attempt at
allowing us to manipulate data in a manner that is normal and
comfortable for us. If you are trying to say that Windows is a poor and
unoriginal implementation of a GUI then I will agree with you. Though
it is getting better. I am not trying to start a GUI vs CLI here. They
both have their uses. Your assertion, however, is somewhat inaccurate.
