Dusted of my copy of Crysis a few nights ago and took it out for a spin.
Many moons ago I downloaded the ccc "tweak" files and played the intro
part (basically to the sunrise) but then I got distracted by other
games. However, I am noticing a weird lag that I didn't have in my first
play throughs.
Whenever I hold the TAB button for the mission status screen there is a
delay of about eight seconds before the screen appears. The game seems
to be frozen while this happens. Once the screen appears the game
unfreezes until I let go of the TAB key ... resulting in another pause
of about eight seconds. The same delay happens when I use the C key to
reconfigure my weapon or the ESC key to save. This definitely didn't
happen before.
Anyone have any idea why this is happening or what I can do to fix it?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
- Sheldon
ps: Dang, this is a purdy game.
Wild ass guess, but it sounds like the delay is when it's throwing a
2D overlay over the 3D game... What vid card and drivers you have?
I've used this on both an 8800GT and GTX285 with the 8585 drivers and
don't have any issues.
Your guess seems reasonable. It's a 8800GTS 512. The driver is the
latest from the Nvidea site ... was updated about a month or so ago.
Crysis was the first game I played after upgrading to my 8800GTS 512 and
there was no delay until this recent play session. I suppose the ccc
tweaks could have introduced the delay but I can't imagine how.
Thanks for your reply!
- Sheldon
You're using the same driver revision as I am, but I think they were
WHQL'd with some changes since you did your install. I know there were
issues with them and people wer rolling back to a prior version.
Interesting. It's worth a try.
Thanks!
- Sheldon
No joy. :(
The lag is still there even with a roll-back to the previous driver. Ah
well, could be worse. At least it doesn't affect combat or stealth or
anything.
The ccc mod not only made the sunrise that much more purdy ... but the
rainbows by the waterfall mist were also very nice.
Thanks anywhoo.

On Tuesday I upgraded my PC with a new motherboard (another ASUS dual
core but 2x as fast, runs cooler), doubled my RAM, installed my terabyte
drive (woo hoo! free space again), and upgraded my 8800 to a 9800 card.
On all high-end games I noticed an improvement. I even tried Crysis and
was amazed at how much better it performed. More importantly, gone was
the weird lag I had experienced when using the TAB (tactical map),
binoculars, C key (weapon modifications), or saving/loading. Yay!
Played a few other game to see what they looked like.
Got back to Crysis ... and the lag had returned! WTF? I quit the game
and reloaded. The lag was still there.
Did some web searches and found two separate forum threads with others
experiencing the exact same lag problem but no solutions found. There is
no lag while playing the game itself, just when pulling up the map or
binoculars or weapon selection.
Tonight I will try uninstalling and reinstalling. I hope I won't have to
uninstall Warhead too.

The latter was probably a mistake.
For the most part, the GeForce 9 series are pretty much just 8800s
with a few bells and whistles; they may be slightly faster but not
significantly.
Sayeth the wikipedia: "It is worth noting that all of the GeForce 9
series is technically similar to the G92 GeForce 8 series (8800 GT/GTS
512), except for the use of slightly higher rated and clocked video
memory. Also in the 9800 GTX+ and some 9800 GT, a manufacturing
processing shrink to 55 nm was added. However the architecture of the
G92 is identical, meaning clock for clock identical performance."

Doubtlessly it was your processor slowing you down; the upgrade helped
there.
Can't help you with the "lag" issue, though. Did you try rebooting
(stock IT answer)?
Yeah ... I read about this ... but the price was right ... $25 and my
old 7600 card.
I can't even use all the extra added RAM yet because I am an XPer ...
but it will be there, ready for Windows 7.

Boy, does it ever make a difference! I can't believe how much overall
performance has improved. I thought it was already pretty good.

Heh. Yes. This weekend I will do the full uninstall and re-install and
cross my fingers.
Thanks for your help.

Microsoft is offering W7 upgrade for pretty cheap prices if you pre-order
before July 11. Might want to check it out. You can order it from online
software shops as well as MS's on online store.

The links I've followed all seem to suggest that by pre-ordering I have
to install Vista now ... and then I can upgrade from Vista to 7. I want
to totally skip Vista.
Or am I wrong ... as usual? :p
- Sheldon
ps: Last night was my first LotRO session with the new upgrades. Area
transition screen loads have gone from 40 to 150 seconds each to instant
to 15 seconds. No game lag at all yet ... not even in the 21st Hall!

Yes, yes you are. :)
No Vista required. Just pre-order the upgrade version,

Cool. About time you got rid of that Timex Sinclair.
Hey! At least I'm consistent. ;)

Okay ... I will investigate. Thanks!

Heh. Fair enough. Thanks for the info compilation.
I know what you mean by installing over existing. I was anticipating
starting from scratch.
My plan was to wait until 7 is out and all the beta testers of the
released version (aka paying customers) have finished ferreting out the
big bugs (early next year) and then dual boot with 7 and XP ... at least
until XP fades out. Most of my software is games so I want to stick with
what works for the time being.
You ever coming back to LotRO or are you afraid of being humbled by my
leet MMO gaming skillz? :p
- Sheldon (aka Elgothir)
Just for posterity ... a complete uninstall and re-install changed
nothing. The game plays slick and fast without a hitch except that the
PDA, weapon customization, and sale/load lag remains. I even re-patched
to 1.1 then 1.2 then 1.2.1. :(
I also tried the Sandbox2 Editor and the lag occurs there too!
Very odd.
- Sheldon
If you have multiple drives then try putting the windows swap file on
one that is different to that which the game is installed on.
It's worth a shot. I'll investigate.
Thank you.

PowerDVDServ.exe
This is a process that apparently enables a remote control unit for DVD
software. I had first heard of it when I experienced freeze framing in
Mass Effect so I learned to end the process when playing that game. Now
I have removed it and Crysis plays normally again. :)
Now I have a new problem -- Crysis and CWarhead both crash my machine
after 5-20 minutes of play. It doesn't matter whether I have all
settings to mininmal or maximum. I really, really doubt it is an
overheating card and suspect that it just doesn't like my 9800 as much
as it liked my 8800. :(
Two steps forward ...
Just posting for posterity.
- Sheldon
I had your second issue and it ended up being a failing power supply.
I could surf 2D or run less complex 3D stuff like Source engine games
all day. As soon as I fired up something heavy duty like Crysis, my
computer would crash within 10 minutes. Sometimes the video would go
out and audio would keep playing, sometimes I'd drop to desktop and
other times it'd freeze solid.
Took a long time to track that down, mainly by process of elimination.
Good luck!
Tim
Is there anything in the game's log files or in the event viewer?
That would make me sad. :(
I suppose it's possible ... but I run a lot of heavy duty games
including my flight sims and they don't seem to be triggering it. Only
my two Crysis games have resulted in ... my crysis.
Thanks for the heads up.
- Sheldon
Not even a blip in the event viewer -- which is kinda strange since the
crash totally reboots my machine.
I see the word "Warning" in the game log but I don't know how to
interpret the file. This one is from my most recent game (last weekend)
after resolving the delay/lag problem.
Does this game log mean anything to you?
I also see the phrase "Nub destroyed" ... is my game calling me a newbie
and claiming my destruction as a victory? :p
Any help is appreciated.

I did actually Google it first and saw many references to online server
authentication but most of the references seemed to suggest a temporary
problem that had since resolved itself.
I didn't see the Punkbuster references though. I assumed it was all for
multiplayer issues. I haven't disabled PB even though I never play these
games online.

LOL. It is rather suspicious. :)

Hmmm...can you look in the cfg file and see if you can find a line
referring to "sys_physics_cpu"? Try setting it to 1 and see if you still
crash.
I'll try this tonight. Thanks!

Last night I wasted a couple more hours investigating this. I do have
Punkbuster running -- though it occurred to me that this shouldn't
affect Warhead, which is not a multiplayer game. Regardless I visited
the Punkbuster official site (which is one of the crappiest sites I have
seen in two decades) and found no love or help. There is a link for me
to download the latest version and I did so but Warhead isn't even on
the list of games I can add. Dead end.
I logged into EA support and clicked on the "Chat Live" link to see
their default "34 minute wait time message" so I aborted. I tried to
e-mail EA Support typing out a detailed description in their web form
only to have their site crash with a CGI script flaw. Grrr ... Dead end.
Many Google attempts found many forum links from a year ago complaining
about very different problems from mine. Most were problems with Steam
and checkpoint errors that lock up the game. Dead end.
Eventually I was able to make a post on the EA Support forums for Crysis
but we'll see. My thread has already been hijacked by someone who
sympathises but complains of a totally different problem (the Steam issue).
Sigh.
It. Used. To. Just. Work. :(
