So are there any other *arcade* flying games like it? He tried IL Sturmovik
and Lock On but did not like either one, a bit too realistic for his
tastes. So is the MicroSoft Combat series, I'd guess.
So what else is out there for someone who liked CS?
TIA.
Dark Void is coming out later this month from the same developers.

He might like the Combat Wings series of games.
Totally different theme (WWII), but very similar play with the third
person view and semi-realistic flight model.
I got Combat Wings Battle of Britian for 5 bucks on STEAM and found it
pretty fun.
Wings of Prey is more arcade style but not to the level of Crimson Skies.

It's the PC version of the console game Birds of Prey so of course it
has relaxed realism.

Interesting.
Seems kind like it's the spiritual successor to Outwars.

Perhaps the Blazing Angels games?
Warning about CS: the game can be very frustrating as there are some
missions later that are *extremely* difficult and there is no way to get
past them. My son and I were enjoying it but gave up after we both got
to this one where you have to follow another guy don't acrobatics and
failed it several dozen times.
>I got Crimson Skies real cheap a couple of weeks ago and now my son can't
I noticed Wings of Prey was just released on Steam.. I can't find any
info about it so I'm witholding purchase for now. Would love a good
modern flying combat game.
BTW, Tom Clancy's HAWX is no doubt an arcade flying game, to the point
it will piss true sim fans off but it's still plenty of fun.. I played
with a flight stick but it can be played with a 360 controller as
well. Its actually quite well done I thought. I would have splooged
over a flight game like this 15 yrs ago.. it's also fairly easy on PC
hardware requirements as I recall?
Hm... I looked at Dark Void promotional material, and was left with
the same feeling I got a few months ago. This game reminds me Deep
Space in genre and appearance a little. If it gives me the same
absorption into play, I would get it; but probably not, and then
forgeddaboutit.

Lots of info about it here. Only people that don't like it are the
hardcore simmers.

They'll attack you no matter what you do.
I never could pull off the maneuver where you fly through the wall gap
with the plane on it's side, but I've finished the game multiple times.
It's a real pity the other Crimson Skies games weren't available on PC.
>I got Crimson Skies real cheap a couple of weeks ago and now my son can't
Clancy's H.A.W.X maybe.
I loved Crimson Skies!
I'd second all the suggestions made so far but if you are after something
slightly more 'simmy' then check out one of THird Wires sims such as Strike
Fighters, Wings over Europe and Wings over Vietnam. They certainly aren't
hardcore but are a decent light weight starter sim. My nephews were both
playing it by 10 years
The one I am thinking of is where you have to follow another guy who is
doing acrobatics. Because of the limitations of the screen you can't
both see what he is doing and where he is going and watch where YOU are
going.
That sounds like one of the missions near the end, where you're being
lead somewhere by an air-taxi guy (something like that) and he want's to
see how good you are.
A bit of a pain, but doable.
Thank you all for your thoughtful suggestions, I'll start by downloading
demos (when available) to see which ones should appeal to him.
did you play CS on XP? I could not get this game to work under XP at all.
Downloaded the 1.02 patch and an additional patch to fix the text problems
in the menu, but i have massive graphic problems in the game as soon as the
mission start..... black dots making it almost impossible to see anything at
all.... i have a ATI HD4650 graphics card ... googled a lot and it seems an
Nvidia card fix was avaible back then, but some users reported they did not
get this game to work under directx 9.0c at all...
Any help appreciated.
Thanks,
Markus
Sorry but no problems at all here - I've played CS in two different
computers, both ancient - one ATI Radeon 7500 and the other an ATI X300.
But I have a similar issue with the Secret Weapons over Normandy game
demo, where the game doesn't start because an error message tells me I
need directx 9.0b to run it?!? Am I supposed to downgrade from directx
9.0c just to be able to play the demo?
I don't even know if that's possible, it doesn't make any sense, dx
should be backward compatible as far as I know. Wonder if the actual
game had the same issue, hopefully that got fixed before release.

Thanks for this, I got Combat Wings and he likes it but no support for a
*joystick* on a flight combat game?!?
Still kinda fun even with mouse and kb only, and purely arcade which is
what he wanted (for now anyway :)
>Tim O wrote:
This is strange, I know the stick works. I had it working with my
Saitek stick, throttle and rudder control. It was just a matter of
switching the controls in-game so that pulling back made the plane go
up instead of down.
I only went back to the mouse/keys on it after I got Dirt 2. Its too
much of a pain in the ass to have the flight stick and steering wheel
on my desk at the same time.
Is your controller detected by Windows?

Yea, I had a Saitek gamepad once where I could remap any key to any
button on the pad, and that was great because I could use it even for
games that did not support gamepads. But unfortunately I don't have
that option with my Logitech Extreme 3D Pro.
> Is your controller detected by Windows?
It sure is, and it works just fine in every other flying game we own.
And apparently I'm not the only one having this problem, this is from a
review at Gamepyre:
" I must have spend a good thirty minutes clicking on every tab,
quitting out of the game and logging back in, but unfortunately I could
not find a way to activate my joystick from any screen in game or
outside of it."
>Tim O wrote:
Wow, thats weird. My Saitek X-52 worked right from the start, it was
just a matter of setting the Advanced flight control on to get the
up/down directions correct.
I probably would have hesitated to recommend it had I known there were
control issues.

You can try Freelancer. It's a space combat game, with mouse based
interface and arcade action. Graphics are pretty good and the story
isn't half-bad. You can find the jewel-case version in US for about $10.

Where, damnit!??? I would really, really like to buy another copy of
this game. I lost my original but I don't use eBay.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Odd as this is going to sound, walmart.

I have seen it at Target, Walmart and basically any store that has
these shelves for $10 jewelcase PC games. I am pretty sure Amazon and
Newegg also carry this version.

Never even been in a Walmart ... but I will try Amazon online. I am in
Canada and NewEgg blocks some online access to us Canucks.
Thanks, guys!
