Even people who thought they wouldn't like this are enjoying it. I'm
finding it quite the addiction myself.

It is fun, just not what I was expecting. I was hoping for more
customization of the guns, but it seems like whatever pops out is what
you are stuck with. Luckily, alot of guns pop out. Also no special
ammo. All special attributes come with the guns. But you do get mods
for grenades (like rebounding, sticky, MIRV, etc) Would be cool if
you could break down guns and mix and match the parts, but as it is
you're looking for the next vending machine to cash it in. Don't
believe the reviews that call it a mix of Fallout and Diablo. Its
more like Halo and Diablo with really bad AI with horrible
pathfinding. Only one real skill tree per character. All other skill
points just add perks to that one skill.

Graphics are nice. The hand drawn stone backgrounds need more detail,
but the depth of field effect while looking down the sights of a gun
are done very well.

Other than that, its a fun game to kill time with and of course even
better with friends. Torchlight and Painkiller are being released
today, so we'll see which wins my freetime tonight.

I like it, but just like it.

I'm having a lot of fun with it, but I wouldn't vote it as my GOTY.

Mind you, having done a quick scan of the games I've bought so far
this year, I can't say I know which one would get my vote. It's been a
turgid year for games for the PC so far. Come to think of it, I can't
think of any that are due out in the last 2 months of the year that
would get my vote either.

It's a sign of a piss-poor year when I wonder if Risen is going to be
the best game I've played this year. Someone save me and remind me
which games will be released in the EU/NA regions before the year
ends.

We needed Bioshock 2 to save the year, but that's not out until 2010.

So far for me, it'd have to be Drakensang (that was this year right?)
but from what I've read about Dragon Age, it could easily take that
spot. I'm getting it this Thursday, so I'll let you know a week or two
after that.

I'll be interested to read your comments on Dragon Age as it's a game
I've wondered about recently.

I'm really a shooter man myself, but some orcs and dorks stuff is
actually quite a nice change at times. That's why Risen seems to be
the best game I've played so far this year. A decent FPS that doesn't
contain the words "Call" and "Duty" has sadly been absent throughout
2009.

I've been enjoying it (have a couple days off, making a 4 day
weekend). Now that DAO is out, however, I'll probably stop playing,
hehe. (downloading from impulse now)

Reminds me a bit of hellgate london if hellgate sucked less.
Though I did like hellgate's talent trees better. The much better
questing in borderlands makes up for it though. And I don't feel like
i"m playing the same design of the same dungeon level over and over
like in hellgate.

MP has some probs. No real loot sharing system to speak of,
have to hope to just have some cooperative people you are playing
with, or they might take all the good stuff you want w/out so much as
a by your leave. I'm a sniper/hunter so I hang in back, so everyone
else gets first pick of loot - always. Have come across some decent
people, however, and you can talk in the game, text or voice, so that
helps a lot. The game lobby sucks though, only shows a random handful
of games to join. Uses gamespy. There are some who are appearantly
using some 3rd party lobby program to get around this.

Vehicles: had my vehicle get stuck once in MP, couldn't
unstick it, so had to walk across the world to get to the other
players, hehe. I like the feature that lets ya teleport to a vehicle
seat though, so if you get seperated you can catch up to the group.

Anyhow, its fun tryin' to get the next best thing in the gun
types you prefer.

technical glitches - half the time when I start the game it
hangs after the company logos go by. just a black screen. Dunno why.
The game runs great when it runs. Some times I have to re-log to get
it to start. Some times it starts right up. Sometimes I just have to
try a few times. Annoying, but doesn't affect gameplay once I get
started so I can live w/it.

I am getting annoyed by that "check me out, I'm dancin!".

Dunno how much longevity it will have for me, but I'll enjoy
at least one play through, get my money's worth, easily.

I only just got rid of the assault rifle that I have had since level 13. It's
a War Stomper that does just over 200 damage per hit. Does nice, tight 3 shot
bursts. My previous did about 90. Plus I have simply vicious SMG that 97x4
damage. It has no scope and is not terribly accurate but at close to mid it is
like a full auto shotgun and outdamages all my other weapons easily, including
my 5 shot rocket launcher.

Oddly, my most powerful weapon is a corrosive revolver w/an
ammo clip of 2. hehe. lots of reloading. I'm usually w/my sniper
rifle though. I have a nice powerful SMG also that is nice when I
can't keep distance on what I'm fighting. I had a real nice shotgun
for a while, but I finally outlevelled its usefulness and haven't come
across a good replacement yet. Nice shotguns seem the rarest for me
to come across.

I did have a go with Shotguns very briefly but their sometimes huge damage is
offsite by their low rate of fire and point blank range. By comparison, that
SMG I mentioned above is a monster. There is a database of found weapons at
these sites:

http://borderlandsguide.com/gunopedia
http://borderlands.wikia.com/wiki/Weapons

They don't mention my specific weapon but it is a Purple HX 440 Double
Anarchy, doing 87x4 damage. A full load, assuming every bullet hits does 28536
damage without adding criticals. Very poor accuracy but with use this
improves.

I keep looking at but will most likely wait until it hits the bargain
bin. Why:

-Has anyone read the user reviews at Amazon, etc...? Seems to be the
buggiest game in years

-It's not CoOp in single player mode and I don't play on-line games
besides L4D. Read the review at GameSpot.

before reading why you say, here's why I say:

for the simple reason that the best deals come after xmas.
We're heavy into the pre-xmas hype, now --- and there's going to be a
lot of BS in the air. In a couple months the wheat will have been
winnowed from the chaff, mostly, and the games that shine then will
shine ever brighter - yet cost less.

That you "don't play on-line games besides L4D" is supposed to be some
kind of reasoning, that explains your opinion of another game?

I can't follow that.

that didn't make sense to you?

I meant that I don't want to buy the game if the only option for coop
play is on-line!

I was late to the party. Just picked this game up on the weekend.

Best opening credit song, ever. I must obtain it.

So far, so fun. At first I found the graphic style a bit jarring but I
have warmed to it.

There is a fan made program called "Borderlands Configuration Editor"
which allows for a number of tweaks to the graphics. You can remove
the line drawing effect and enable one or two other options.

I think the game looks gorgeous once the silly cell shading look is
dispensed with and the bloom, motion blur and fog volume are enabled.
Gearbox did a really good job of creating a spartan world populated by
strange beings and even stranger monsters. The Island of Dr Ned is
even more impressive to look at.

You can get the editor here http://www.mediafire.com/?2w5gmdqjihj

It needs Microsoft.Net Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 to allow it to
function. If you don't have that you can get it here (watch the wrap)

I already have this installed so I should be good to go.

Thanks!
