My playlist this past month was remarkably short: I only started a few
new games. There's a variety of reasons for this, including a bunch of
new DVDs, increased workload at the office, and sunny spring days, but
the main reason I didn't play games? New computer time! Yay!
Now, while normal people might just plug in the new PC and start
gaming, that's not what I do. Use the bog-standard installs from the
OEM? Hell no! Instead, I have to repartition and reformat and
reinstall, and tweak, and generally muck about until I get my system
Just Right (tm). So that takes about a week. Then I have to figure out
what to do with the older computers (generally, they all slide down
one place, so New PC* is the main gaming rig, old gaming-rig becomes
"gaming PC for guests to use", old "guest rig" becomes media center,
and so on). That usually means lots of reformating and reinstallations
and tweaking and so forth for those PCs. Another week. Then -just
because the computers were in such a mess anyway- I decided to totally
redo the home network: simplify wiring, get a proper server setup, go
wireless where applicable, etc. End result: lots of time tweaking PCs
(fortunately, I consider that fun too), but not much time spent on
actual games.
Nonetheless, I did play some games. Mostly, these consisted of games
played in previous months, just so I can see how the new rig compares
in performance to the old. These include Elder Scrolls 4 Oblivion
(graphic settings maxed, and still high FPS, woot!), Tomb Raider
Legends (yay, I can use "Next Generation content" now :), Need for
Speed Most Wanted (no real difference in performance, but still a fun
arcade racer), and Tycoon City New York. See previous months'
comments for what I thought on those games, if you care. But I'm
really less PLAYING these games than just mucking about and admiring
framerates ;-)
On a similar note, I reinstalled FarCry but -as its been a year or so
since my last play-through- I'm sticking to it for the meantime (I
expect that -as in the past- I'll abandon the game shortly after the
introduction of the Trigens). Graphically, FarCry compares quite
favorably to recent games, and I am *still* impressed by the AI.
FarCry always has had a number of rough edges, but it has always been
a wonderful experience for me. I'd forgotten how hard it was, though.
Oh well; practice, practice, practice!
New to my collection is the new Starship Troopers FPS. Reviews of the
game were largely negative, but it was bargain-binned by the time I
got it, and besides, I'm a sucker for power-armor. But the v1.1 patch
is a must: without it, the weapons are far too weak. Patched, the game
rises slightly above mediocrity; there's an undeniable thrill about
mowing down wave after wave of bugs. Too often, though, it degrades
into a boring ultra-linear tunnel-shooter FPS. Nonetheless, the game
was strong enough that I played it to the end. It doubtlessly helped
that -as I was mucking through the game- I was also watching the DVDs
of the "Roughnecks" CGI cartoon based on the same franchise (of the
two, the DVDs were far more entertaining), but 'Troopers does have its
moments.
Next month, as I settle into my new machine, I expect my playlist will
be more entertaining.
So what have YOU been playing in May?
* The new PC is a Athlon64 X2 4800 / Asus NForce4 SLI Deluxe / 2 GB
500MHz DDR RAM / EVGA GeForce 7900GT 256MB PCIE / 300 GB HDD. It's not
super-top-of-the-line, but it should keep me happy for the next couple
years.
My previous rig (an AMD 3000XP / 1.5GB / GeForce 6600) is still a
capable machine but its lifespan was limited: the PSU was barely up to
the task of powering the GeForce, the CPU was being hit hard by the
physics of modern games, and its AGP interface limited future
upgrades. So I took the plunge.
Benchmarks indicate that the new PC is twice as fast; with future
upgrades (SLI video, perhaps, very likely a physics card if those
things catch on) I'll be able to milk this new machine for another
three years until I have an excuse for buying a new one again ;-)
> So what have YOU been playing in May?
the titan quest demo. i've put more hours into it than most games.

For such a short list, that was a long-winded post. :P
Half-Life 2 and Tomb Raider: Lengends, both Xbox rentals.
TR:L was much better than I thought it would be.
Wouldn't it make more sense to write this at the end of the month? There's
still 11 days to game. :)

Resident Evil 4: Awesome. Just started chapter 2 and am tugging along

a really fun game.
PC:
Guild Wars: Factions: Just started the Cantha campaign. Taking my

Call of Cthulu: Just started this(5% complete) but weak graphics and
voice dialogue. The sneaking around isn't all that great either since
there is no indicator to see how concealed your character is.
Serious Sam 2: I play this in short bursts. Fast paced fun arcade
gameplay.

PC: Sin Episodes, Oblivion.
360: finished Tomb Raider Legend (bloody good game), Halo 2 - am
desperately trying to learn how to control shooters with a gamepad in
preparation for Gears of War. Marble Blast Ultra, Feeding Frenzy.

SiN Episodes 1: Emergence - I'm still playing this actually, been taking my
time on it.
Oblivion - have not spent a lot of time in this.
D&D Online - played the free trial, it was okay, but not worth a monthly
fee, I'll be uninstalling it.
Animal Crossing: Wild World (NDS) - getting kind of repetitive now I think.
That's pretty much it, I spent a lot of time role-playing on www.RPOL.net

Not so much time for games this month but played:
Oblivion (100 hours in and haven't started the main quest yet - my best
value for money game ever so far)
Sin Episodes: Emergence (twice - totally opposite to Oblivion in that its
around 6hrs long but damn... it's fun. Now looking for easter eggs)
...and dipped into Far Cry for my sniping fix
UT2k4 ONS mostly
Sin Episodes
HL2 mod minerva/metastasis

Forgot that one - played through the 1st part again before playing part 2 of
Metastasis this month. It's an excellent mod.
oblivion mostly. I haven't had much time or energy to play games between
TAFE (aussie higher learning for adults who cant get into university, but
gets same degree's short of a bachelor degree) and weekend binges at clubs.
but I have played out 2 hours of Sin (after many attempts to purchase it off
steam, where I already own games, I had to pirate it) and I think it's more
interesting than quake4.
also dipping in occasionally into Guild Wars and made the first city in the

The good:
Oblivion - I've been playing my first character for nearly 200 hours
(overall, not just in May) now and I'm starting to get a bit bored with it
;)
Sin: Emergence - nice shooter, not great, but ok. Got through it before the
patch, even though it was devilishly hard at times.
Operation Flashpoint (+numerous mods) - Coop with a friend is still a must a
few times a week, it seems this gem will never leave my HD, at least not
until Armed Assault is out.
Rome: Total War (Realism mod) - Been drawn back to that old love of mine
once again and am trying to carve my name into history's pages as the
Sarmatians. Quite a change actually, as I nearly always played as the Romans
before.
Steel Beasts Pro PE - still working through the tutorials.
The bad:
Brothers in Arms RtH 30 - came with my new graphics card, played a couple of
missions then quit. Not my cup of tea.
Ghost Recon: AW - my OFP buddy insisted I try out his copy on my rig, as
it's practically unplayable on his system. Well, it runs fine on mine (no AA
is a joke though), I just didn't like it enough to finish even the second
mission - back it went.

Best Regards, mat

I finally completed StarCraft: Brood War after two months of spending
an hour every few evenings on it. The game itself is terrific and as
well as the storyline for being an otherwise straight forward RTS game.
The careful level design keeps the single player campaign from
becoming too boring despite the generally repetitive strategies you
encounter otherwise in skirmish and online duels. There are
cooperative maps so it is not fair to write the multiplayer aspect
entirely off for catering to the 'zerg-rush!!!1' style of play most of
the time.
So far I haven't had the time to complete the other unfinished games
sitting on the shelf here. Hopefully that'll change in the approaching
weeks. I've been thinking of reinstalling Hexen II and playing through
with one of the available source ports.

Congratulations on your new machine.
I liked the idea of re-using old PCs for other tasks... a kind
"recycling" of PCs, the only one I do not think would work for
me is using the oldest computer for a Media Center cause I see
MCs to be best in small sizes so they can be integrated in a
living room without taking too much space and the oldest the
computer the bigger it is (at least in my experience).
> So what have YOU been playing in May?
After ending Condemned in the first of May I played Painkiller
Special Edition which was more of a re-playing.
After that I haven't played much cause I am having difficulties
with one of my main suppliers of PC Games and that has disrupted
my gaming habits.
Like you I hope June will be much better.
- Tomb Raider Legends - Thought it was really good; just wish it was a
level or two longer.
- Oblivion. (I'm now bored with it; got too repetive for me)
- GRAW demo. Ugh. Thpthpth.
- SiN Episodes. I *loved* this game. Yeah, it can be nitpicked, but it's
the most *fun* I've had in a long time.
- Waiting for: HL2 Aftermath, Episode 1.
You're close to three-quarters of the way through.

If I feel I have more time to, I might try and find the full

still have some new games I want to try.
BTW If you don't have a real 3Dfx card then download a Glide
Wrapper (http://www.zeckensack.de/glide/index.htmlto ) run
with the 3Dfx graphics(remove the OpenGL32.dll file from the
directory also). It runs and looks a lot better on new PC's
with non 3Dfx cards.

Call of Duty: Blast from the past; it's interesting to play an FPS a
few years after release, when its graphics are no longer as seductive,
to see if it holds up on pure gameplay. COD certainly does.
Thief: Deadly Shadows: Bought this on eBay recently along with Deux Ex:
Invisible War. It's a grower, and I'm getting more and more hooked on
the atmosphere of the game. I'm taking my time, since the pace means
it's the kind of game you have to be in the mood for, but I can see
myself sticking with it to the end.
Hitman: Yes, the original, "Codename 47". I bought this ages ago, or
possibly got it as a present, I can't remember! Finally installed it,
and had a play of the first two levels. I could see myself getting
hooked _if_ it had a quicksave option, or at least, you could actually
save between levels. But having to repeat a level again and again
simply because you get whacked as you almost finish it is not fun.
Can't see myself revisiting it.
JFK Reloaded: Perhaps a controversial inclusion! Was reading about it
on the Wikipedia entry and found that it's been released on Underdogs
as "abandonware"; the original company is now defunct. Once you get
past the shock value, there is some substance to this mini-game. It
really _does_ make you think.
I've read many articles about the assassination, seen the movie, yadda
yadda. But playing this game really gives you a sense of the physical
space of Dealey Plaza, the situation of the actors, and what _might_
have happened on the day. For example, it's interesting that Oswald had
a clear head-on shot at the car, as it initially approached the book
repository. It's at this point that, when playing the game, it struck
me as the obvious place to take the shot. What is strange - and
something I only found out after I'd initially played the game - was
that he waited and took a more difficult shot, when the car had taken a
sharp left just before the book repository and took the route behind
some trees, between the repository and the infamous "grassy knoll" (You
can see the route at http://www.consideritdone.cc/images/dealey.gif)
So playing the game initially confirmed to me (I thought) that the
conspiracy theories were baloney - shooting Kennedy was the equivalent
of a fish in a barrel. But when I found out that Oswald waited 'til
after the turn, when the car was behind trees, I thought - why on earth
did he wait to take the harder shot? Possibilities are the fact that he
wanted a clear shot at Kennedy, without either the windshield of the
car _and_ several people in the way. Perhaps he was even scrupulous
about taking a shot that involved aiming over other people - ironic
since a bullet passed through JFK into Governor Connally.

I knew that post to Play.com would do the trick !
>I knew that post to Play.com would do the trick !
I thought you know who was a True Gamer that only uses real shops?
Only when it suits apparently
> I knew that post to Play.com would do the trick !
Difficult for me to understand what you mean...
The post I made was not about Play.com about rather about
Amazon UK, which is for me the best online Retailer for
Pan-European PC Gamers that want Games in a English edition.
I did send an email to Play.com a year ago but never received
any reply, regarding the restriction they have about shipping
to all European coutries
Its a shame Play.com doesn't ship to all Europe but currently
I'm very happy with Amazon UK.
> I thought you know who was a True Gamer that only uses real shops?
You are a gamer simply if you buy and play games.
I guess everyone in this group is one.
As for real shops... every shop is "real" but if you ask
me I do prefer "physical" shops from "virtual" online
shops but the reality is very clear... "virtual" online
Retailers have now better service, quality and offer.
Will this continue and Online Retailers be the best to
shop for PC Games in the future? I don't know but I do
hope "physical" retailers do try and improve to give
more competition to the market.
> Only when it suits apparently
I have to adapt to new situations...
Buying in a physical Retail store is for me the best.
Why?
Simply cause I do not need a CC but can use cash and
also I don't have to pay for shipping and handing.
The problem is my local retail market has in the last
year declined overall in quality... and has reached a
level not satisfactory for me.
Less offer, less quality, higher prices and limited
availability, so with this reality what can I do?
I looked for other alternatives mainly in the online
Retailers and found out Amazon UK is the best for me.
I also have as other choices Game.net and Gameplay,
but Amazon UK is my favorite.
Yesterday I order from them after an error in their
system was corrected... in the same day they already
shipped and tomorrow I will have the games so I can
play them during the weekend... I simply can't ask
for anything else.
Even with the cost of shipping and handing, and the
need for CC, the quality, the price, the selection
make online Retailers the best option for me now.
If Amazon UK had a physical store near by you bet I
would have bought from them instead but they don't
so online mail order is my current choice.
Here on earth, we call it a joke.
