PC next summer--Mac just "in 2003." (Yes, this is real. MS put out a press
release this morning.)

Not much detail on any enhancements--details to come later--but it's implied
there will be some for multuplayer.

That's ridiculous.By then it will be very outdated. Why are they bothering.
It'll be great for the Mac people though.

It's elementary, my dear "Peter Olafson" <pnol...@attbi.com>:

Wow. Talk about too little too late, unless graphics engine is one of the
updates. By then UT2003, Unreal 2, and possibly even Doom 3? No telling
what else. I feel sorry for Bungie. I'm boggled as to why it would take
this long to port an XBOX title?

Intentional sabotage to prop up the eX-Box, perhaps?

It doesn't take that long. I have little doubt MS is holding it back until
Halo2 arrives on the Xbox. Hopefully Gearbox will take the time to spruce
Halo up, otherwise it's going to look pretty stale.

Yawn. It will be a dated game by then. They should quit now while
they're ahead and port Halo2 to PC instead.

Why do you think so? There is certainly no PC FPS today with the depth
of Halo functionality nor the quality of Halo AI.

Doesn't anyone ever play games from a year or two ago anymore? Just
because something is a year behind the cutting edge, does that mean
it's totally worthless? Isn't a good game still a good game,
regardless of when the game is released? Hell, I still play games
that were released in the 80s and 90s.

Yeah because Half-Life is just awful to play now. Great gameplay makes up
for a lot of visual flaws.

Halo ranks with Half Life, the only other game that matches (and surpasses
due to the advances made since Half Life) Half Life's quality. Seriously, I
rarely complete an FPS, with Halo I have played it through three times on
each difficulty and its still the best game on my Xbox.
And the graphics are better than any PC FPS out now, with Elite Force 2
still using the Q3 engine the game won't look outdated compared to the other
games of the time

How did you get used to the controllers on the Xbox? I tried it a a CompUSA
once and MAN that was odd. I am very accustomed to the WASD + mouse combo.
I am accustomed to running around like crazy yet keep a bead on an enemy,
even at different elevation angles. How is this done with THUMBS?!

I'm serious - how?

What about NOLF and Dues Ex?

Not everybody is going to buy an XBox just to play Halo.

They were both good games - although I prefered NOLF to DE, but Halo beats
them, definately. The sheer scale is fantastic, from the start out in the
ship then landing on the planet and running from the enemy over this
gorgeous planet.
The 'only two weapons' method works really well as well, and the vehicles
are the best implemented in any FPS by far. I was also a massive fan of the
Marathon games (Bungies other FPSs before Halo) and they have put a lot of
injokes/ideas from those games into Halo. For instance the marines remind me
a lot of the BOBs in the marathon games, especially with the things they
say....

Well it's not that frenzied where you need constant elevation
accuracy. Time is more of a friend than anything in getting used to
the controls.

Yep Halo is the only console FPS I've played, Xbox my first console, and it
translates to the console surprisingly well, with twop analogue controls,
one for moving/strafing, the other for looking around. There is some auto
aim in there but this compensated for the obvious loss in accuracy in not
having a mouse.

They're far too disparate to really compare - NOLF perhaps, but you can't
say HALO is "better" than Deus Ex, they're quite different games. I like
Halo, but it certainly doesn't remind me of Deus Ex.

It's tricky, but easier with Halo than any other console FPS. They
have this subtle kind of analog auto-aiming - the closer your
crosshair is to an enemy, the slower you go.

Most peole don't enough notice it. They just know it feels better than
other console FPS games.

They are up in the same league as top-notch FPS. Deus Ex and Halo are
both ahead of NOLF though, both have some innovative gameplay elements
that no one else has.

I agree you can't compare them, other than to say Halo and DE are both
innovative AAA games, both with several features unmatched by aby
competition.

It's elementary, my dear Dan Stephenson <stephed...@airmail.net>:

I got pretty good at GoldenEye on the N64 with it's wacky controller but I
never could get good at Turok 2 on that platform. I also got pretty good at
Unreal Tournament on the PS2 using a dual shock controller, once I
reconfigured the controls a bit from the standard. It does take getting
used to and it's nowhere near as accurate as with WASD-mouse, but it's
still playable. Haven't tried Halo, I look forward to it in a year or so
whenever M$FT finally gets off their lazy duffs and releases is on PC.
Unless I happen to get an XBOX before then (assuming some other good games
come out for it that interest me).

Two words: Nuclear fucking weapons Ok? Russia, Germany, Romania- they can
have all the democracy they want. They can have a big democracy cake-walk
right through the middle of Tiananmen Square and it won't make a lick of a
difference because we got the bombs OK?
