I've ordered new parts for my PC and after spending years in the doldrums
of PC gaming, I'm finally going to witness new releases on my machine.

The problem is I'm so out of touch, I have no idea what the latest and best
games are.

So, what are the best games at the moment?

Also any decent PC gaming websites to recommend? I've tried
www.gamespot.com and IGN but both are so laden with ads its a hassle to
browse them.

Thank you

My brief list would be:
GTA:VC, UT2004, Vietcong, Deus Ex (if you haven't played it before),
BF1942.

Bluesnews, Shacknews. Firingsquad and Avault are okay in small doses.

I use Firefox with the awesome Adblock extension, I haven't seen an ad
in weeks :-)

I've played deus Ex, but my aging pc didn't handle it too well. I'll check
out the other games

Thank for that, I'll have a look.

I also use Firefox with Adblock, but I must be missing something.
To get rid of ads I have to either right click the ad or right click the
adblock tab to get rid of each ad in turn. The ads return on my next visit
because generally the ads placed are from a different URL.

What exactly is the benefit?

Thanks for the reply.

Ooohhh... We're talking a LONG time out of touch? 3-4 years?

I second Battlefield 1942 & Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. Will add
Operation: Flashpoint and Max Payne2 (they're FPS's with slower pace
and, especially Flashpoint, greater realism).
But really, there's been plenty of good games the last few years. I
mean, have you played Half Life? It's probably the best FPS ever made,
and about contemporary with Deus Ex.
Do you specifically want first person shooters, or also other genres?
If so, add Homeworld, Ground Control, Gothic2 and tons of others to
the list...

A leaked memo from the British Foreign Office report on why the US started the Iraq
war and also suckered in Britain, concluded that "The swift success of the war in
Afghanistan, distrust of U.N. sanctions and inspections regimes and unfinished
business from 1991 are all factors", but that Bush's War on Terror did not contribute
significantly. (Reuters, 18/9 -04)

I really liked Unreal Tournament 2004 (especially the onslaught gaming
mode).

Far Cry and Doom 3 will push the limits of your new system.

those are just First person shooters though

Another vote for GTA:Vice City, BF1942 and also Max Payne 2.

I'll also recommend FarCry. It's the best first person shooter in last
few years IMO and looks amazing on current hardware. All recent
Monolith shooters are pretty good, No One Lives Forever 1/2, Alien vs
Predator 2 and Tron2.0. Then there's Prince of Persia: Sands of Time
and Beyond Good and Evil.

If OVS wants to step out of FPS genre, there are some excellent title
coming out now - specifically Warhammer : Dawn of War, Kohan 2 and
Rome:Total War. There's also StarWars: Knights of the Old Republic,
Gothic 2, Morrowind Game of the Year (original game and both
expansions) and NWN Platinum Edition (again game and two expansions)

To pick just five isn't easy, but I guess I 'd go with

*) Prince of Persia: Sands of Time (action/platform)
*) Battlefield 1942 (multiplayer shooter)
*) Rome: Total War (strategy/tactical)
*) FarCry (shooter)
*) Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (RPG)
(replace the above with Gothic 2, if you don't mind slightly weird
controls and more open gameplay...... SW:KOTOR is just a safer
recommendation.. but they are both excellent games)

My 2¢

You haven't discovered using wildcards have you. Instead of blocking
one specific JPG/GIF/whatever, analyse the whole URL and use a * to
block a all the ads from that site, e.g. you have an ad with a URL of
www.acompany.com/ad/greatestofferever.gif , make the adblock filter
www.acompany.com/ad/* . After adding wildcard filters to all the sites
you visit, your browsing becomes so much more pleasant :-)

Yep played Half-life, and loved it.
I'm not specifically looking just for First person, I'll have a look at
reviews of the others you recommended and see if they take my fancy.

Thanks

Thansk for taking the time to reply. Thats a great list and having a quick
browse on each of the games, they all interest me. All of a sudden now the
choice is *too* much. :)

Thanks

Thanks. I didn't know about wildcards. I'll go round all my usual sites and
try this.

I like www.3dgamers.com and www.gamespy.com but they have ads too. In
fact, I'm not sure of any sites that don't use some kind of ads now a days.
Another good site is http://www.metacritic.com/games/pc/ good for music,
movies, and games. And finally, for help with games, there's
http://www.gamefaqs.com/

For action games there's:

Medal of Honor series
Call of Duty
Max Payne 1 & 2
Serious Sam 1 & 2
Doom 3
Black Hawk Down
Joint Ops
Rise of Nations (RTS game)

Oh, man, you're gonna get more than you asked for!! ;) Start a Word
document and cut/past all these suggestions into one long, evolving
document. Your problem will NOT be too few choices; it will be "where do I
start???"

I'm in the minority on any of these Top 5s or Top 10s, so maybe I'll give
you a little different slant.

1) Splinter Cell - just loved it, in all its linearity. Absolutely
beautiful graphics, and just immersive as hell, especially late at night
when all is quiet and the family's in bed. Try it with headphones or a good
surround sound.

2) Black Hawk Down - yes, it's on rails. yes, you can kill the enemy with
a good shot to the toe, but for all-out release-the-day's-tension
bullet-fest with a decent atmosphere, I really like it. Multiplayer is a
blast. And if you like the SP, you can go back and pick up the Team Sabre
expansion - tons more of the same, only harder.

3) Medal of Honor Allied Assault - Pretty much a standard FPS. You can buy
it really cheap, and it's good for many reasons (see my recent post
comparing it to Call of Duty)

4) Rise of Nations - An excellent RTS, in many peoples' opinion.

5) BF1942 - A must-have, IMO. Just so many ways to go with it. The
single-player is less scripted and more open than any FPS I've ever played.
Unlike the others I've mentioned, you can drive vehicles, fly planes, and
operate just about every weapon or object in the game. It's got a feel all
its own, and the online community is extensive. There's always a game.

Have fun!!
