I was playing Archimedean Dynasty via DosBox yesterday and it worked
fine.....except, of course, my pc couldn't make use of the 3dfx patched
version. Couldn't get the glidewrapper utilities I have to work with the
patch because the special 3dfx executable "can't find a 3dfx-capable card"
on board.

So my thoughts entered the realm of "If it aint broke, don't fix it (I mean
how much better looking is the 3dfx going to be in today's terms....in a
1996 game. I don't remember it being THAT much better), I began to wonder
if it was possible to remove a Diamond Monster II that I have in an old pc,
stick it in my current one so that AD could detect and use the card to
render 3dfx effects.

Granted, that old pc with the Monster II installed probably already has AD
on the HD so it'd be easier just to hook it up, if I really HAD to have 3dfx
in AD. But that's not the issue. My question is can you actually stick an
old Monster II in a P4 3.4 (with a GF8800GT as the main card) and use it to
play old games that support 3dfx?

I think the problem you'll run into is the passthrough at high
resolution. I remember even back then, people who were running at
resolutions above 800x600 would describe artifacting and color issues
from the pass through.

I think there is a Glide to D3D or OpenGL type wrapper that should
make your game look like it was meant to. I've never tried it or
anything, just saw it mentioned someplace.

Here is a forum dedicated to running old games on newer hardware. Hope
this info helps. http://vogons.zetafleet.com/

PS: Sorry for covering some of the same issues you've tried in my
first post... I got sidetracked while writing the original and came
back forgetting some of what I read. Aargh.

So it's the pass-through that would probably cause problems. Yeah, I've
already spent some time on Vogons looking for solutions. I'm now
experimenting with an open-source version of DoxBox that includes 3dfx
support. Problem is the game still looks (in vain) for a 3dfx-capable card
and won't start when it can't find it. This CVS-version of DosBox can't
seem to fool the executable about this. The DOS glide-wrapper I previously
tried ran into the same problem.

Did you try dgvoodoo glide wrapper ? I have had some luck with this in
the past. It makes Redguard completely playable in 3DFX mode. Tomb
Raider and Red Baron 3D also work fine with it.

I have a bunch of old parts, and have considered building a DOS/Win98
gaming machine. I have a Sierra Screamin' 3D (Rendition) along with a
Voodoo 1 and a Voodoo 2. Also have DOS compatible sound cards too.

I don't have CPU's and MB's because I got hooked on MAME and built a
few arcade machines using old parts. I had a P3/933 which probably
would have been a super old game machine, but I made a bartop arcade
machine. Equally as fun, but it'd be fun to play VQuake on the
Rendition card again, just for the hell of it.

I also have some of the finicky old Origin stuff like Crusader,
Pacific Strike and Wings of Glory. Also the Activision Mechwarrior
games that I loved, but seem to flake out on any newer OS.

God, I've been gaming for a loooong time. LOL.

Try DosBox .72 for the two Crusader games. It works like a charm.

I'm starting to get some results on AD by using YKHWong's DosBox CSV build
which supports glide in the DosBox environment. Got the game to load up w/o
the "no voodoo card" error msg (even got the spinning 3dfx logo), but alas
the mouse locked up on me. Still working on it.

I've downloaded dgvoodoo, but haven't tried it yet. Still fooling around
with another program atm. It'll be the next one I try.

I've now tried YKHWong's CSV build, dgvoodoo, and OpenGlide, but no luck.
The game starts OK with the ad3dfx executable, but when I try to go into an
actual mission (or instant action) all I get is a black screen. The sound
works fine and the mission is actually running. I've got control and
everything, but can't see anything. This is progress of a sort: this
morning, ad3dfx.exe wouldn't even start, by noon it was starting, but I got
an immediate lock up on the main menu. Now, I can at least start the game
and start missions.......now, if I could just see something. :)

My son's says if/when I get the thing to run, I'll play it for 5 minutes and
be done. He seems to think that getting it to run is the "game." I'm
playing. How silly. ;)

I haven't tried GLidos yet (tho' I think I dled the trial version). I'm not
sure that I've read about anybody getting AD 3dfx version to run under it.

I spent god knows how many hours fooling around getting old games to run and
it never seemed to be the same problem twice with Dosbox and glide wrappers.
In the end I gave up and dug out all the old PC parts laying around and
built myself a legacy system running Win95 and Dos. I bought a KVM switch
to let me use the 1 keyboard/mouse/monitor and the few missing parts I did
have to buy cost next to nothing, the local componets supplier I use even
gave me a dusty old case and PSU for free.

I think in the end it was a much simpler and quicker option

Running Glide in emulated mode is somewhat tricky. However, if you
want to run old DOS games (Gold Box, Ultimas, Might&Magics, Falcon,
Sierra adventures, Lucasart adventures, Access games, Crusader,
Bioforge, Strike Commander, Wing Commanders etc) then DOSBox is the
simpler and quicker option, compared to having an ancient PC.

Yes. I've done this with my current system running Windows XP.
Specifically I've used a third party driver that allows 2000/XP to
utilize the 3dfx Voodoo2 board so that I could play the glide edition
of Incubation: Time is Running Out. It's a WIN32 (engineered for
Windows 95/98) and it worked beautifully. I'm not sure if there are
any additional steps that would be required while attempting to run
the program through DOSBox... I don't know if attempting to play the
game through an additional layer (i.e. DOSBox) would complicate
matters but for native programs, having the physical card present can
and does work although it requires said third party drivers for the
later editions of Windows to recognize it.
