I find the "vanilla" Battlefield 1942 to be fairly unrealistic to the
point it detracts from the game. I think a game should be fun to play, but
several of the guns (like the Browning Automatic) do not resemble their real
life counterparts at all.
OTOH, there are mods like "Experience WWII" that have very accurate
modelling of guns, a very nice armor damage modelling, but are very, very
restrictive and might compromise alot of the fun (no bazookas on Pacific
maps, snipers are seperate kits, etc.). Battlegroup 42 seems to have
struck a nice balance overall, though I do wish they'd give the same
attention to the gun modelling that they give to the vehicles (IE, the BAR
is still the same assault rifle rather than a light machine gun). Unlike
the default games, the armored personnel carriers actually protect the
troops from small arms (in the regular game they tend to be bullet magnets).
Several other mods like "Eve of Destruction" have gone for the "nod
towards realism" approach, at least as much as the engine allows.
