I now have Red Faction Guerilla and can't play it because Live won't update.
It's been an hour faffing about with forgotten ideas and updates and all
sorts of shit. Having bought the eldest an Xbox360 I also had to seriously
mess about with that this morning.
Anyway, it's shit and I hate it.
They just released a huge patch on the 22nd. Let it run, it is
probably downloading that.
The game is actually pretty cool.

Red Factions implementation of it is actually kind of sucky. If you
don't create a Windows Live profile you can't change game options,
customize the keys or save games... That is all local stuff, so its
total bullshit.
I totally ignored Games For Windows in Fallout 3, in fact I never even
had to create an account to use it with any game until I played Red
Faction Guerrilla.

Turns out there is a problem with applying the patch via Live. The answer
is to manually run the downloaded .exe with the correct path to the game in
the options. You have to let the update fail via Live, then:
"C:\Users\<user name>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\X
Live\Updates\54510837\Content\rfg_updater.exe" /f
"<drive>\Steam\steamapps\common\red faction guerrilla"
Even then I had to try this twice.
Why why why do they use this shit? Surely the Steam cloud is meant to avoid
this - or is that only for Source games?
Whilst I'm at it - what is it about most console conversions that means the
characters move in the same hurried way?

Same crap is with GTA4, which I bought on the Steam sale. The game
required me to create Rockstar Club profile, and a Windows Live
profile as well. I have to run them, and the Rockstar sits in my tray,
and I always have to click through a bunch of pop-up Rockstar windows
declining this and that even if I play in off-line mode and I never
created my on-line login. Nevertheless, both Rockstar and Windows Live
transfer something to the Internet (or from). On top of it, the
gameplay session is initiated via Steam. And Steam adds its windows in
the beginning, and in the end ("Do you wanna buy that ?").
In resume, I could live with the pop up windows of one service (i.e.,
Steam), but two or even three services -- that's too much.

Dirt2 requires that Live! shit too. I set mine to auto login so it
doesn't annoy the fuck out of me. Seems to me Microsoft is trying to
turn our beloved PC game machines into consoles.
Yeah, in-game IMs. No PC could ever do that.

FWIW, at least for the disk version of GTA4 there's a quite thorough
solution called Xliveless. It's a very small file called xlive.dll
takes care of GfW and the social club. It's brilliant, it even fixes
the save file location as GTA4 got even that wrong.
They're just trying to help out the bed-wetters like you who
constantly complain about not being able to figure out complicated
concepts like Run As Admin on your pc. PC's are for the technically
strong, if you're having problems digging your head out of your ass it
would be better to buy a console than sling your used tampons on the
wall in a fit when things don't work the way you think they should.
If anyone wants to see fucktard boy in action look at thread titled
"Steam+Admin Mode = NFG"..
douche.

Hey... yours goes up to 11!?
"Why don't you just make ten louder and make ten be the top number and
make that a little louder?"
"These go to eleven."
Well, it's one louder, isn't it? It's not ten. You see, most blokes, you
know, will be playing at ten. You're on ten here, all the way up, all
the way up, all the way up, you're on ten on your guitar. Where can you
go from there? Where?
Classic...
Yeah, he does appear to be a bit of a troll, in addition to an epic
douchebag.
'Juarez the nymshifter' gets you guys going every time. He'll probably
re-appear as "Epic Douchebag" soon.

..and this new briarroot name of yours was born how many days ago?
First post I see with it is June 2003... slating the redux version of
Apocalypse Now (which I quite liked). It probably goes back further but
I don't have older posts to hand. That's quite a few days really...
What are you using to search? It doesn't count unless its
bria...@gmail.com
link here:
http://groups.google.com/groups/search?hl=en&q=briarroot%40gmail.com&sitesearch=&scoring=d
OK... in that case he started posting with his gmail account in November
2007. Still quite a few days...
That did not answer my question.
My retention policy in Thunderbird is 'do not delete'. I have all posts
back to June 2003.
Of course, with simple search skills you can see a post from Oct 2007
with that address here...
Did that answer your question?
giganews.
of course.
what else could I expect?
How come you aren't spending your time honestly, contributing to the
real economic effect of making this a totally happy steam filled
holiday season, like so many others are doing?
Not that I don't like giganews. I hear that giganews prices are well
within competitive range - tho' steered more toward selling corporate
packages.
Can't say I full understand what is is you'd like to say or like to
ask here. Is your question directed toward giganews users or the
folks who have responded in this thread?

today's word is "rhetorical"
I'm not actually posting from Google; my gmail account is just a free
address that collects spam - with the occasional missive from a poster
too shy to ask me a question via the newsgroups. I've been posting on
Usenet since 1991 but have only been using "Briarroot" since 1999.
But back to the subject at hand...
I'm not sure who is weirder, 'Juarez' or his new nemesis, Tyraledus.
There I was, *complimenting* him on his dubbing 'Juarez' as "Epic
Douchebag," and he lights into me as if I had insulted his mother! You
don't suppose...? Heh! ;-)

"It is a general popular error to suppose the loudest complainers for
the public to be the most anxious for its welfare." - Edmund Burke
(1729-1797)
That seems a little melodramatic, especially since I don't believe I
insulted you at all, or otherwise displayed any problem with you, just
asked how long you'd been using the name.
And today's example of usage is "rhetorical questions are always
welcomed as an appropriate use of readers time on usenet"
