Daft question time.... what is the difference with the Steam and disk
versions?

I have both now (picked up the Steam version a few days ago for stupid
money). The Steam version has regularly crashed the PC through
overheating the gfx card.

I have progressively set up a number of profiles with faster and faster
fan speeds (the latest was 70%) and this has made each game last longer
until the inevitable.

I'm about to take the side off and do some early spring cleaning of dust
etc and try another profile at 80-85% but the fan noise is becoming
intrusive and I did not have to do this for my disk version. Weird

Gfx card is the ATI 4870 with a factory OC. Its been rock solid in all
games for over a year. All Stalker settings on highest at 1920x1200 and
DX10...

My US version doesn't even have a CD check, which negates the sole
advantage of STEAM.

Please post your findings!

If your graphics card overheats with any game, then it is not being
cooled enough. I have seen with my older ATI Power Color card and
some online reports of various other brand cards that had very poor
thermal paste application under the GPU and/or memory. Some cards
had a problems with enough cooling to the voltage regulator chip.
Also some have problems with the fan speed control and did not run
fast enough stock.
Have you tried something like ATI Tray Tools to stress test the card
and memory at its factory settings?

Agree. A few months back I disassembled my 4870 (20 tiny screws, be
carefull!!), cleaned out all the cat hair, and put new arctic silver on the
gpu (left the thick spongy memory stuff alone, hard to find replacements for
that). Temps dropped 10C.

This might actually just be down to my own stupidity. I realised
earlier that since playing last I had a new 28" screen and play now at
the much more demanding resolution (1920x1200 opposed to 1680x1050)...
it was never going to be the same as last time... doh!

The advantage for me was being able to d-load it to other PC's while
working away. I don't actually have a place or PC in Paris yet where I
spend 70% of my time but for 2.50 the future planning seemed worth it.

OK - besides the bigger screen the PC case had more fluff than Jonah's
navel and I found that the fan for the 4870 wasn't spinning up
automagically as it should under load (I'll try new drivers tomorrow).

I tried a few different profiles to get around this and since the case
clean-out and an 80% fan speed it's been solid for a few hours. That
should be the end of it... (he says touching wood and with fingers
crossed) Thanks for the interest.

Seems OK with a blow out and 80% fan profile so I hope I don't have to
resort to this... thanks though.

Overheating was the culprit and a clean out of fluff and a faster fan
profile has fixed it ATM. I'm hoping I don't need to be messing around
with thermal paste etc... thanks
