Cross country, 5494 on 56KB frame relay, SNA over Ethernet, etc.
environment....
a small print job takes 10 seconds to begin to print, but if normal spooling
to an ouput queue is done, only a 3 second delay occurs.
Can anyone advise what system overheads might cause the delay? One would
think spool *no is more direct, perhaps some hardware handshaking is taking
a long time to complete over the link?

TIA

Not sure exactly what you are saying. Does it take 3 seconds with spool to
actually spool the file or 3 seconds to start printing a file when sending it
to spool? If the latter, I would think the "hardware handshaking" should be the
same whether writing direct or writing from a spooled file. I do know that no
data will be sent with SPOOL(*NO) until a full page is been put. Could that be
the problem? You can specify DFRWRT(*NO) on the printer file to get the data to
start printing before a full page has been put with SPOOL(*NO).
