I have one 48gx that in user mode if I hold the ON button the entire stack clears. On another 48gx I have I cant get this feature to work. Is it a due to a difference in firmware versions? thanks

No, it's because the first HP 48 has a key assignment that the second HP 48 doesn't have. Some folks would say that the key assignment was intentionally put there by something or somebody, but the modern enlightened mind would scoff at that notion and insist that it simply evolved there by random happenstance. In either case, if you copy that assignment to the second '48, it too will have that "feature".

Here's one way of doing that.
On the 1st '48 do this:
RCLKEYS DUP 91.1 POS 1 - GET
Store this on an SD card (use any name you wish).
Recall it to the stack on the other '48.
On that '48 do this:
91.1 ASN
That's all it takes!
Hope that helps! (I hope it works!)

Hi Joe, thanks for a Friday smile :)

Here's some thoughts that ran through my mind upon reading your post:

iRobot?

The afflicted 48gx was taken on a transatlantic flight and at 35 000 ft
altitude over the Bermuda triangle, the resulting MBU* was just the right
pattern for that ON-key behaviour.

????????????? it's not a 48gii or 50g ;-)
however, any 48sx/gx compatible RAM card will do.

*MBU - Multiple Bit Upset caused by the increased radiation at higher altitudes
(and blamed for some of the anomalies over the famous triangle)

When you say "hold," do you mean that just pressing ON
with a quick release acts like normal ON/Cancel,
while you have to hold the key down for some time
to get this alternate "clear the stack" behavior?

Was there a "shift plane" argument which implemented
"long hold" key assignments in HP48 series?

Do you have to also install the following library
(KEYMAN by Prof. Wolfgang Rautenberg)
to make the above magic happen,
or at least to make it possible to create new assignments?
<http://www.hpcalc.org/details.php?id=2819>

Is this a later version of that library?

Oh yeah... HP48 RAM cards do work best on the HP48, huh? SD cards fit (you can fit a BUNCH of them in there), but they don't work quite as well.

In user mode if I have several values in the stack and I press and release the "ON" button one time the stack clears ...I like this feature .
If I just would like to get rid of the last value I entered out of several, I just use the back arrow once. I like this as well. I cant get this feature to work on a new 48gx that I just bought while I am using the 48gx in user mode. When I wrote the post I didn't have the 48gx in my hand and was unable to check whether or not it was a hold or press and release the ON button. thanks

To clarify what Joe & John are saying: this is NOT standard operation of any version of the 48gx. On your first 48gx there is either a user key assignment or a third party program/library installed that provides this user key assignment.

There are many possibilities as to exactly which program or library would have this function, or even which could facilitate this. Please read the manuals about user key assignments, finding installed libraries etc.

So there's no "long hold" involved -- "long hold" was not
an HP48 series user mode key assignment feature, but
Prof. Rautenberg's library states that it can provide that feature.

As Joe Horn said, you evidently have either a program or a CLEAR command
assigned to that key. I wonder whether that might disable some other
necessary purpose of ON/Cancel, or even make it too easy to
accidentally clear the stack, but Joe gave you the info
which can isolate whatever is assigned,
which you can then transfer to your other calculator
and assign to the same key.
