My ROM Update Problem

I'm having a problem when I get to the step that states "hold + and reset
for 3 seconds." I'm not getting the ROM update menu to pop up for selecting
USB (option 1). I tried holding + and - simultaneously plus several other
types of resets. I have not had this problem with past updates. What am I
doing wrong?

Hold + and - down. Reset the calc with a paper clip, but remove the paper
clip right away. Continue holding + and - for 3 more seconds. When you
release the keys, you should get the update menu.

Sometimes it works... But I agree this is anything but friendly, and so
badly documented in the software itself :-(
