With apologies to Dylan Thomas.
I always get a chuckle when I see postings from Cat Fanciers' Association,
Inc. (Not that the posting about a down server is funny.) I chuckle because
I have always think of the 3000 as a dog. I don't mean the server is a "dog"
as used in the vernacular; I mean that it has dog-like attributes.
Just like a good dog the 3000 responds quickly to a variety of commands, it
attempts to please and it is low maintenance. We use similar words to
describe the 3000 and dogs. words like faithful, reliable and enduring. You
get a sense of comfort knowing that it is there without having to check on
it constantly.
Please do not misconstrue this statement to be anti-cat. Cats are wonderful
animals, I'm sure. I just don't equate them to the 3000. If you do feel free
to express why. The same offer applies to gerbils, hamsters, elephants etc.
(No weasels, please. This about the server not management.)
To answer one last question: Yes, I am insane.

Thought some of you may enjoy this:

Cats do what they want, when they want.
They rarely listen to you.
They're totally unpredictable.
They whine when they are not happy.
When you want to play they want to be left alone.
When you want to be alone, they want to play.
They expect you to cater to their every whim.
They're moody.
They leave their hair everywhere.
They drive you nuts.

Conclusion: Cats are tiny children in cheap fur coats.

I've had dogs. I have cats and current want a dog as well.

I've always thought of Unix as more dog-like in that it's not terribly
bright but it has total faith in anything its owner tells it. Whatever you
tell Unix is accepted as absolute gospel and is acted on instantly and
fully, no matter how stupid the request may be.

A cat would be much more likely to respond "You want me to do what?!?", but
then of course it would just go back to sleep and ignore you.

So I think both analogies fail with respect to the 3000.

MPE is more like a butler or some other selfless personal servant, quietly
picking up after its master and invisibly arranging for things to work out
ok regardless. Kind of a Jeeves to the typical user's Wooster.

The truth about Cats and Dogs is :

If you feed a dog, it will think that you are his master and it will serve
you loyally, honestly, truthfully and will always remember you. In single
term, it will think that YOU ARE GOD.

If you feed a cat, it will think that its being fed by devotees and others
are expected to please them. In single term, cats think THEY ARE GOD.
