The Navy has discovered that on a number of its newer iX boxes it has
IMAGE/SQL, but that older systems (running 5.0 or 5.5) have plain IMAGE.
Is IMAGE/SQL now the "standard", or is it an option purchased at additional
cost?
Are older systems upgraded to IMAGE/SQL when the move to 5.5 pp6 or later?
Thanks!

Not sure about it being the "standard" but it sure is the one you want to
be
using, especially if you're doing any C/S work. As far as the upgrade, I'm
not sure if HP intends to "give" Image/SQL away or not; however, it does
come "standard" on new boxes.
Now, for something I *do* know: Way, way back when HP decided to integrate
Image and SQL they gave the installed base the option of getting the
Image/SQL
"upgrade" for free by just paying the increased support cost over plain,
old
Image (uh, make that TurboImage, I guess). That's how most of the
installed
base got Image/SQL on their older systems. So, I don't know if the Navy
has
missed the boat (hehehe) on getting Image/SQL for their older systems or
not.

Jim is correct: There was a "window" when the upgrade
from TurboIMAGE to Image/SQL was "free" (but subsequently
you paid higher support charges). But that window closed
several years ago now (forget exactly how long). If you missed
the window and are not planning to upgrade your old 3000 to a
newer model that will come with Image/SQL bundled, unless
HP has implemented a policy change that I do not know about
(always possible), you will have to either:
(1) Purchase the upgrade from TurboIMAGE to Image/SQL.
(2) Purchase one of the third-party "direct to TurboIMAGE"
ODBC products (if ODBC access is the only thing you
are looking for).
Note that one possible option if you want to stay with the same
size and model of older HP 3000 that you already have is to
check with the major HP 3000 resellers: They may have a
SPU in stock that comes with a bundled Image/SQL license.
Of course they will want money to swap boxes, but depending
on the size and age of your existing SPU, it might be cheaper
than straight-out buying the software upgrade from HP (I don't
know that it is; been I couple years since I did any serious
checking with third-parties about doing something like this)....

Image/SQL is the name of the product - there is no more TurboIMAGE.
Image/SQL comes with the system.
After looking into it though, Ken is right -- older systems may need to
upgrade. I thought that after it became the "standard" that customers on
support would see this on their FOS updates. I guess I was wrong on that
one.
Oh well - live and learn!
