C8000: How to un-screw CPU0 (damned special screws ...)

Hi all:

It was like a delayed Christmas: My two C8000 boxes arrived
yesterday. Barely able to sleep last night I eagerly went to work to
cannibalize the one C8000 that came nearly empty except for the CPU,
mainboard, power supply.

The other one sits right next place waiting to be extended with the CPU
to be extracted from the one open box. With stars in my eyes I went to
work and then:

What at first sight looked liked normal Torx is a "special" version of
screws with a spike in the center of it - effectily rendering my torx
screw drivers useless. Never seen that before.

Wow. Bummer. Bad. News.

How do you guys get the CPUs out of your C8000s without special tools
from HP ?

Any hint / advice really appreciated...

TIA!

Regards
Frank

You go to a real hardware store and buy a set of bits.

These things are variously called "tamper resistant star bits", "tamper
resistant torx", "torx tr", "pin in torx", and "security torx" among other
things.

Harbor Freight sells a set for $9. www.harborfreight.com

Thanks for the heads up. It shows that I am more a keyboard than a DIY

Thanks!

So I woke, did not shave, and went straight to a real hardware store....

Epuipped with my new tools I opened the two C8000s, removed the CPU from
the bare one after removing the airflow parts and the power supply and
went on to remove airflow and power supply from the other one, too.

And then it suddenly was clear that there will one part missing: An
Y-adapter cable from the power supply to the CPUs. So, only one CPU will
get power to what seems a separate switching power supply board being
directly attached to the CPU module...

Damn. Anybody aware of that little Y cable? It's a six pole
connector... Anything like that aware somewhere?

Thanks for any hints!

Hi,

I may be wrong, but the psu of the c8000 here has an unused cable , 6
connectors, marked P19 ... , 3 black, 3 yellow, that I think should be the
one going to the 2nd cpu.

But better to wait for someone else to give an input

No need to wait! - I was looking at the voltages and yes, P19 is the
right connector. I powered up and get an orange blinking system LED (the
front panel one) and diagnostic LED 2 and 3 staying red - might that be
because I haven't connected a monitor to the FireGL X1 card ?

In theory : no video adapter present
Try to connect the monitor, also has the power cable been plugged to the
videocard (in case it's required like on the x3)?

FireGL X1 here. No extra power connector. Took card out and started
system - same 2 inner LEDs staying red with system LED blinking orange.

Seems as if graphics card is dead.

Will try to get a new one... Hmm - it's getting more complex and costly
than planned.

Just wanted to let you all know ;-)

Cheers

Maybe it would be worth trying on the spare machine

(if an ebay sale, you could discuss with the seller, too)

Hi Frank,

you could connect a terminal (a "real" terminal with a CRT and an RS232
interface or a PC with a terminal program) to serial port A of your
C8000 and disconnect the USB keyboard from the C8000. The console I/O is
then redirected to the terminal and you can see, whether the rest of the
system is running or not. The terminal must be set to 9600N1.

Hi Lothar,

thanks for the hint - I did use my Mac Pro with a cross-over serial
cable to connect to the serial port of the C8000.

Just having read the first two chapters of the book "hp-ux 11i
internals" I was curious as to how much is printed on the serial
console. Wow - it's really fascinating to see how the hardware boot
process works ! Monarch selection, memory discovery and test, I/O
discovery and test...

I get the BCH console output and got the expected warning message saying
that no graphics card could be detected.

I am glad, though, that grabbing the second CPU from the other box and
inserting it in the new one did work. I am seeing now 4 cores at 1
GHz. Good! ;-)

Meanwhile the supplier agreed to send a new graphics card (well, a used
one) as a replacement. Very prompt support and now discussion whatsoever
needed... I am impressed.

Thanks again for all the help.

Look carefully at the "non working" graphic adapter.
My C800 arrived from an eBay source with a surface mount capacitor
broken. There must have been a non-expert assembler, breaking that
capacitor with the card holder.
Send a detailed photo, if you want...

So you mean the SMD capacitor was on the graphics card?
Yep, I'd be interested in that photo.

TIA!

Best wishes

My card had a big metal SMD capacitor: one of the pin was detached from
the PCB. I suppose that the seller removed something from the machine
before selling and had been reassembled by someone not very expert.

Well, still NO LUCK ...

I changed the graphics card and I am still getting no graphics output
with still the same two LEDs burning red...

Boot trace shows the following messages:

CC_BOOT_GET_SS_CONS
CC_BOOT_INIT_SS_CONS
CC_BOOT_GET_SS_KEYB
CC_BOOT_INIT_SS_KEYB
CC_BOOT_ERR_EXEC_EINIT
CC_BOOT_NO_GO_SS_KEYB
CC_BOOT_GET_DFLT_KEYB
CC_BOOT_INIT_DFLT_KEYB
CC_BOOT_ERR_EXEC_EINIT
CC_BOOT_NO_KEYB_FOUND
CC_BOOT_NO_GO_SS_CONS
CC_BOOT_GET_DFLT_CONS
CC_BOOT_CONSOLE_DEV_FAILED
CC_BOOT_INIT_DFLT_CONS

And then BCH kicks in showing the processors and so on.

So, as it seems, there's no keyboard found. I also see that the USB
doesn't deliver power to an attached mouse... (optical mouse's laser
doesn't get powered up).

The HP C8000 Technical Guide (5969-3188) doesn't talk about the keybaord
having to be connected to a certain USB port...

What am I doing wrong ?

Thanks for any hints ...

Cheers

No, the usb port you use doesn't matter at all, indeed.

So, lets see

1) videocard , exchanged, is in
2) monitor is plugged to the videocard
3) keyboard and mouse are plugged to some usb ports on the back

... and you get that error. Is it correct ?

If so, maybe it's time to use the spare c8000.. single cpu to begin with,
videocard and some ram...

Yes, definitely. Apparently it *should* work ...

Thanks for the feedback!

Latest status: It runs - sort of. I was desperate and couldn't really
understand the keyboard error so I took the USB keyboard off of my C3700
and plugged it into the C8000.

See, no errors any more (well, I still get the error that the configured
keyboard cannot be found but the boot code then goes on to rely on the
firmware-coded factory default keyboard path and yeah, this inits this
keyboard (Cherry brand) correctly.

The keyboard I had hooked up previously was an Apple keyboard I just
took off my Mac Pro - and, who knows why, this doesn't work.

I now can go on trying to figure out why the Apple Cinema Display keeps
showing a blank black screen although I have installed an adapter that
hides the Mini Display connector from the DVI output port of the ATI
FireGL X1.

In theory it *should* work ;-) Time to get a DVI-to-VGA adapter to use
my old 19 inch HP tube type monitor for a test ride ...

Will keep you posted.

Thanks again for all the help so far!
