I'd rather not spend a bunch of money and obtain it directly for HP
because this is mainly for fun (home use) and not for a business. If I
purchase a used copy of HPUX 11 v3 update 5 will I have a licensing
issue? In other words, am I able to install and use HPUX without
obtaining a license from hp? Hoping HPUX doesn't have some security to
disallow use without a license.
Please let me know if HPUX doesn't require a license for use and someone
has HPUX 11 v3 ( itanium) update 5 installation media for sale (
reasonably priced)?
Thank You,
Tony Rodriguez

Maybe. It depends on if your rx2600 was licensed for HP-UX. It it was
then no, it is no problem, if not then yes.

If you mean if it is possible to install it without needing a license
password or activation, then yes (some additional software requires a
license codeword, though). However, this doesn't make it legal if your
machine is not licensed for HP-UX.

Thanks

gcc/g++ would not be "codeword" protected. nor would X11 and CDE.
whether or not you would actually be properly licensed for X11, CDE
and the rest of the closed-source but not codeword bits on an HP-UX
11iv3 install media would be a question beyond my expertise.

I don't interest myself in "why". I think more often in terms of
"when", sometimes "where"; always "how much." - Joubert
these opinions are mine, all mine; HP might not want them anyway... :)
feel free to post, OR email to rick.jones2 in hp.com but NOT BOTH...
X11 (if it is supported on the rx2600 in 11i v3) doesn't need a license
codeword, and CDE doesn't, too.
Free software like gcc of course also doesn't need a license and can be
downloaded from software.hp.com.
