HP CP1160 printhead problems???

I keep having printhead problems on my cp1160. Right now I have a new black
printhead, new ink cartridges, I've removed the battery (left side) to avoid
expiration dates, and sometimes the black printhead will work and I'll get a
print...but most of the time I'll get a print without black, so the text is
mostly very light colors. The print tests show nothing is coming out of the
printhead when I have this problem.

I need some basic troubleshooting information, especially a way to determine
if I'm getting a signal to the print head. While the color printheads show
signs (wetness at their inlets) that they are accepting ink from the color
cartridge, the black printhead inlet is dry...leading me to wonder if it's
a signal deficiency.
I realize there aren't many cp1160's out there, but are there other similar
models that were popular...with comparable troubleshooting methods.
