In case you've missed the news, the SPS team has made some major
improvements in the drive emulation for VICE, supporting such complex
protections as RapidLok, V-Max, Vorpal, HLS.

Does this mean VICE is getting fragmented, or are these changes going into the main VICE distribution?

As I understand it, the goal is to get the changes into the main
branch, but other people outside of the SPS team control that, so
until the merge can happen, they've made their version available.
