I'm originally from California (Los Angeles, then moved to San Diego).
I presently live in SW Washington State and work at the University of
Washington in Seattle as a repair tech. On weekends, I operate Carlsen
Electronics, a repair-only home business.
I got into Commodore repairs in the mid '80s when I bought my first
computer (a C64 system). Let's just say I'm too old to change. I'm 53.
Guess what kind of car I drive... a '75 Dodge Dart. (I have six of them.)
Why? Same reason I like my Commodore stuff. After all these years, it still
does what I bought it for. I'll be obsolete before my computer. As for my
car, well, when civilization passes away, there will be only three things
left: ants, cockroaches, and Dodge Darts. :-)

You sure the USA claims Barstow, CA??? As a resident of Needles, CA about 60
years ago and from my memories I'm not sure the USA would really want to claim
any part of that area. Tarantulas and Lizards were natures gifts to us kids for
toys. Hell of a sandbox, though.

For those unfamiliar with North America: That's the Mojave desert and Death
Valley is in the neighborhood.

Vaya! Creo que todo Usenet deberia cambiar al espa&ol! Es el idioma
que se habla en todo el mundo... :-)

Now, talking about the size of Mexico City. It will depend upon the
source of information you consult. Officially Mexico City is just the
territory covered by the Distrito Federal (Federal District) and it
holds a population of nearly 14 millions.
Nevertheless, the City has expanded to the so called Metropolitan
Area, which covers a good portion of the southern part of Mexico State.
Counting the whole population of the area, we have more than 22 millions
of inhabitants, almost the fourth part of the total population in the
country.
Now, with this in mind you might guess that we are the biggest city
in the world indeed. However, I had the idea that Bangkok that sometimes
is the biggest (have to look at my almanac when I get back home).
And for the chaos... well, let's just say that I've been in Tokyo
and it doesn't compare against my city. You have to live a traffic jam
here to know what a 'traffic jam' really is. (I've been in US too,
mainly in California, so let me say that you're lucky about it).

Brings up another point... It would help all who are looking to buy if those
who are offering to sell equipment/hardware posted someplace in their message
the country, city, state they are posting from. Paying US$3 for a cable or disk
and double that for shipping from another country is not worthwhile most times.
I hate discovering that after exchanging two or three messages and getting my
hopes up.

Yes, we should do this once a month just to see if some new user pop somewhere.
Also by knowing few users in your area, could start your own Commodore User
Group, even if it is two people. That will make you a Point Of Contact in your
area, to rescue any Commodore Lost Soul. It is hard to figure out where an NG
member is from by looking the e-mail address. By doing this, we can put a Name
and Location with the e-mail address. And for our amigo Rodolfo in Mexico
City, "No estas solo" , meaning "You are not alone". :-)

Perhaps someone with a web page would like to start a 'Commodore users'

Hi,
I don't usually post often to this newsgroup, but this time...

I'm located in Enfield, CT...about 15 minutes south of CMD's office
in E. Longmeadow. I have 2 c64s, and just picked up a 128 real
cheap a couple of months ago. I have a 1571, FD-2000, 64SCPU,
a 2meg CMDREU, and a Zoom modem and Turbo232 from CMD.

I am the only member of the CRCCC (Capitol Region Commodore
Computer Club) who has a Commodore online, which is kinda
pathetic.

It's nice to know I'm on this newsgroup with many old-timers
and knowledgeable Commodore people. I am learning quite a bit

In response to the question or suggestion about a list of like-minded
people and their locations, isn't this more-or-less handled by user
groups? E.g. you interface with the group nearest to where you are,
and at their next meeting or in their newsletter that's presumably
passed around, your name or your question gets airing or exposure.

Anytime you post to USENET, your words are archived, presumably forever,
in very large third-party databases. Some people are burning the stuff
into CD-ROM... so if you include your location and the key strings
"Commodore" and "C-64", people will be able to cross-reference your
name fairly easily I should think.

Btw, last I checked, Amazing Computing was still printing a user groups
list. See AC's guide at http://www.pimpub.com

So what's wrong with snow 11 months in one year??? After all it is still
just moisture when it melts. But I bet some of you really believe it snows
in Canada ALL YEAR LONG. well it ain't true. (at least not in the sunny
south), you must remember that the geographic and magnetic North Poles are

I must agree, I yelled for my wife, twice, to come see who had written
a message in comp.sys.cbm before I realized she wasn't home, so I then
call both kids in and made then look at the screen and told them a
little about Jim Butterfield. (I don't want them to grow up completely
ignorant about the GREATS in, not just Commodore, computing.) I don't

assembly/stepper motor combination for the 1541 disk drive that supports
such a monstrous proposition. When we look at the section of code
starting at $FB1A, and going through $FBE0, we realize just how remarkably
versatile the original ROM for the 1541 was, and how much more data could
have been stored on a disk, if only bigger disks had been meant for the
1541. :)

But here's a question: for the 1540 disk drive (for the VIC-20), was
there a similar piece of code that checked how much data could be
delivered successfully to a track, ultimately for calculation of the
inter-sector gap?

More specifically, what is the comparable address for the 1540 ROM
routine?

I am in Toronto, Ontario, Canada I run The Vault bbs. Really the last
Commodore BBS in Toronto (unfortunatly) However there are a few near by.
My bbs is networked CommNet, ComLink, Net64. I hae been into commodore
computers sense the day they were released in Canada. I bought my first
C64, 1541 disk drive, for just under $1200.00 Canadian. and I bought my
last C128, Monitor, 1571 and 1581 for under $40.00 (man how times
change!) now I am running a 1.2 gig hard drive with Turbo-232 and high
speed modem. with a 1750 REU.

I was amazed at seeing the post - Why in spite of the fact that I program
in C++ now on big high powered Pentiums, nothing ever really compared to
those early days where *everything* was a learning experience and it was
just (dare I say it?) "Cool."

I remember reading Jim's articles in all the magazines, including
Compute's Gazette, which was (for me) the greatest.

Just curious, if anyone knows (or Jim himself reads this) what is Jim
Butterfield doing nowadays?

Well, I don't know exactly what he's doing nowadays. But I can tell you
this; In 1977 or so, he started appearing in magazines with loads of
invaluable KIM info. Then came along the PET, and he was riding the crest,
disseminating disassemblies that literally had the Midas touch. He
continued throughout the entire 1980's, guiding users, beginners and
advanced alike, the explorations of the c64, and later, the 128.

Now, it is 1998. One thing has remained constant for over 20 years; Jim
Butterfield is still at it, churning out articles covering the c64/128,
this time in the pages of Commodore World.

May he continue as long as there are c64/128's being used throught the
world... :)

To Harry ....

If I was Jim.... I'd probably be watching this newsgroup very
close...but I would probably not use my "well known" name very often if
I posted publicly...

Jim has helped and guided countless C= users (including me) thro all
sorts of things that a user can do to a simple machine
...... for a LONG time......

Educated guess.... he is on to other things using his expertise in other
fields these daze besides the C=64, but like most of us... still follows
the and leads in the C=...... trouble is if one of the "C="gods" drop
thier name, I have to assume they get slamed with email, most of which
is answered here....

Im sure John I (dang cant remember how to spell yer last name John, so
Ill just say I )
.... gets a ton of mail from those that know who he is...

Jim.... if you read this THANKS from Arid-zona for all your help over
the years.... and the books and stuff that we have bought that you
wrote...... you deserve every penny you made....

Here's another one:

25km north from Heidelberg, Germany.

Anyone from Germany willing to sell one of these: ?
- SX-64
- C-900
- 1561
Then please make an offer. Price should not have more than 2 digits :)

HEY! Where am I?

Oh, I recognize this place; Shippensburg, PA, in the beautiful
Cumberland Valley (OK, the sweltering in summer CV) just 30 miles west
of Heidelberg, PA or 40 miles sw of PA's capital, Harrisburg is where I
tune my guitar and run my coffeehouse. This is Dutch country, a
misnomer as it's more Deutsch country, really. The men in black in their
buggies are commonplace; late at night we get gangs of bikers in bonnets
and straw hats cruising through town.
My first computer was a T100 or 102 with builtin wordprocessing and
terminal program, perfect for reporting high school sports. More suited
for that than I was, in fact. I presently use a C128d, have an extra
128d, a flat 128, 4 c-64s, a bunch of 1541's and 1571's in varying
states of disrepair, several C= monitors named Kenny, a Plus/4, a C2n
datasette, a 1530 or whatever datasette, several Star NX1000c printers,
an Epson 24pin Action 3250, an MPS-1000, and an MPS-801 printer and
loads of software that came along for the ride as I built my collection
of backup C= equipment. (Getting ready for the Apocalypse.) Am currently
trying to reacquire my 8032 and dual disk drive (what was I, nuts?), and
looking for another Kaypro II. Love those portables.
