Hello all,

I've installed R3 on my 200 Mhz pentium and it is really slow compared
to NT... The screen updates are pathetically slow. Is this just an
anomaly on my machine or is it something more serious? Another matter.
Whenever I try to load BeOS from the NT bott selector, all it does is
print '07' all over the screen and do nothing else. Any suggestions?

Just to note, I don't think that's Be's fault -- I set it up on (close to)
identical Zenith VP Pentium 75s, and on one it was absolutely pathetic,
but on the other one it flies. I only use the one system for Be so I
haven't traced the problem, but I think it may be something to do with the
hard drive on the slower system which has given me some problems before.
I'm going to attempt a low-level format & redo the whole process on that
system to see if there's any change at all.

Sounds like an anomaly to me - BeOS runs beautifully on my K6-233. Note
that the performance difference isn't as noticeable as it was on a Mac,
because NT actually does utilize the hardware semi-effectively. (Not
looking to start a war...) There's also this other issue: BeOS was
probably compiled with Metrowerks' x86 compiler, which is, how shall I put
this, less than optimal? (it's a decent compiler, it just spits out code
that's a bit on the slow side...)

As far as the weirdness involving use of the NT boot loader, I had a similar
problem (my spewed '01') - I actually wound up reformatting my drive,
installing '95, then BeOS (but didn't mess with the boot loader), then NT,
then ran the boot loader doohickey, and it worked fine. Here's what my HD
looks like now:

FAT16:950M (games)
BeFS:850M (hobby/free time)
NTFS (on a DOS extended partition):2.2G (work & net access)

Hi there Matt!

I would just like to agree with you. I have a Dual P150 with 128MB at home
that used to run NT 4.0 for quite some time. I installed BeOS on it and now
it's slow. The screen updates/drags are slow on mine as well (I'm using a
Matrox Mystique 4MB SGRAM). Earlier today I sent email to Be Technical
support to see if they had any suggestions or explanations for this anomoly.

Strange... I'm running BeOS on 233Mhz Pentium and it really flies!
Of course, I have Matrox Millenium, that could help a bit.
I'll try to install crappy Cirrus CL-based card, and see If it makes
any difference.

Well on my Compaq Deskpro (4000) PII 300 - it doesn't seem very fast!
The screen updates are certainly not very good, with compaq's matrox
card in. I am running it from a slow hard disk, but all the same with a
PII 300 I expected to be able to drag a window arround smoothly.

I saw and used BeOS on Macs last year and was much more impressed.

Also, same thing about NT and booting, I used the tool, added BeOS to my
boot menu, but it doesn't work.

I'm running r3 on a Pentium 120 and having no speed problems.

No problems with screen redraws or anything like that.

These problems you describe (along with others in this thread) should be
sent with detailed descriptions so that Be can work out any kinks.

PS: I also used the NT boot loader but didn't have any problems.

Thanks all,

I think maybe my Mystic card may be one of the reasons for the incredibly
slow graphics, although it seems a little unlikely. The HD shoulsnt be a
problem, as Be is up and running on a brand new IDE drive.... Hopefully
these problems will get sorted out as more drivers are made available.

I'm also having trouble with the NT boot manager. the addbeos program that's
supposed to add BeOS to the boot manager adds a BeOS option, but when I
select it, it prints 01 all over the screen.
