I'm a Retrocomputing enthusiastic and I've recently picked up an old
3B2/400 with manuals and 3 box of floppies, I've carefully cleaned all
the system as you can see on my site:
http://gallery.bizzi.org/3b2400
But when I've turned on it I've got this message:
SELF-CHECK
FW ERROR 1-02: DISK SANITY FAILURE
EXECUTION HALTED
SYSTEM FAILURE: CONSULT YOUR SYSTEM ADMINISTRATION UTILITIES GUIDE
Now' I've read all the info about this message and I've searched about
the "3B2 Computer Maintenance Utilities" diskette in my
diskette box, but this disk is missing. :(
Can anybody help me?
Many Thanks.
Ciao.
Fabio.
Its not going to auto-boot from the floppy. At this point, type 'mcp'
(it won't echo). Make sure your set to 8n1 on your terminal. If you
get the same "SYSTEM FAILURE" line, then set to 7e1 and type 'mcp'. If
it occurs again, shut off the computer and disconnect the battery and
try again.
Once you get past this, you'll be able to select the device you want to
boot off of. You want the 'fd' device.

I have many original floppy sets as well as 'dd' backup images. Like wise,
I have spare NOS cart and floppy drives. I'm guessing you have two 73MB
MFM drives in your 400. Hopefully you'll be able to use them. Check
that their connections are good (an erase does well to remove oxidation)
and that they're powered up. If the bearings aren't shot, they shouldn't
be too noisey.

Done! Now I have to restore an image dump (Thanks BOB!) of the Idtools
Diskette to a 5"1/4 diskette (I hope to do it on a Linux pc) and try to
boot the utility...

I Have two 36MB MFM Drives.

I have cleaned deeply all the system, but now MFM drives spin up (with
lot of noise) and after 5 or 10 seconds spin down and the message pop up. :(
Thanks a lot for the infos.
Please, if I'll find some unfixing problems on my drives could I'll ask
you some help ?
Thank you very much.
Ciao.
Fabio.
Yes, that should work using dd and the proper special device name.

I saw what you did taking the whole dirty machine apart to make it clean
and noiced the 36MB drives. I actually have a couple of spares but also
have the 73MB disks. Unfortunately I have much more ESDI and SCSI drives
for the 3b2, but that won't help you on a 400 with no SCSI HA.

How noisey? Like a chain saw? If so, you probably aren't going to get
to use them. Since you are used to Linux you probably will be surprised
to know that you can't run a 3b2 purely off a floppy. Its possible to get
to a shell, but the environment is going to be so minimal it may frustrate
you. You'll need to learn 'ed'.

Just post to the group. There are a few people (including Bob) reading
and apparently some self-important self-proclaimed USENET czar who wants to
make this group go away. ;-)
See how enthusiastic you are about this 'retro-system' gives me hope that
there will once again be interest in the 3b2.
