As Little Orphan Annie’s dog would say - Grrrr... Roff !
My next posting is Saturday because I *really* have to get some sleep. This
past week has been quite a month. Last posting “Macro Markets” *seemed* to
imply that I wanted you to thank me. What I *intended* was a reminder that we
all owe our prosperity and our very survival to millions of people willing to
set aside personal convenience to achieve a benefit for society. If the
complainer has a personal axe to grind (as I do), then I see no reason why
that should detract from the quality of the resulting benefit. Do NOT send me
email unless you have something *critically* important to say, because it
could choke my machine. To those who already sent it, yes you are welcome. If
you like what I say so much, then do something about it. Fix the problems I
mention. That is the most sincere form of appreciation.
Speaking of choking machines, I have some unsolicited advice for AOL users.
Unless you have *business* to transact, or some other legitimate and
*necessary* task to perform, then GET OFF THE WEB DURING OFFICE HOURS !!! If
you can lay hands on a spammer, administer justice. Do *not* reply to a spam
since that just makes the web traffic even greater. Learn how to use your
browser properly in off hours. If you get more than a few hits on a search,
chances are that you need to learn more. Think about what you really want to
find *before* you do a search. If you do a web search, constrain the date (and
newsgroup) whenever possible. Some search engines (like Hotbot) also allow
geographical constraint - use that if possible. When you know what you are
searching for, type it in. Do not use wildcards just to save a few keystrokes.
If most of the postings on a news group are junk, then cancel it so that you
do not choke the mail system. For example I picked this group because it is
quiet, and the topic seemed applicable. If you *must* do automatic flash
sessions, schedule them as seldom as possible. Do not call up every hour just
on the off chance somebody may have posted something. For most people the wait
for connection time is really NOT worth clogging the web with worthless flash
sessions. One thing is for sure. The web *cannot* take it if ALL of America
goes online at once. Show some courtesy to everybody else by using the web
only when you *need* it. When you are on a web page with a bunch of links in
front of you, carefully review all the available information *before* you
select a link. When that triangle is turning around you are part of the web
traffic problem. If you have a web page, put fancy graphics, bells and
whistles off in a side link, *not* on the entry link. Keep the entry page
especially small, and other pages as small as possible. Think of a link as a
line and a web page as a paragraph. You will then understand how to divide the
page contents.
I want to stop the *manipulation* of markets by what I call the “power elite”.
Do you remember the junk bond scandals ? Well that wasn’t even a start on the
problem, and what we have today is far worse. The problem is *corrupt*
speculators protected by corrupt government, which is in turn funded by the
*corrupt* speculators. The news media is paid off by and pimps for both,
except when it is outright owned/controlled. I am going to focus my efforts on
market manipulation. The rest of you can help by doing your own checking or by
working on corrupt government. In case you misunderstand (bunch of idiots) I
am NOT attacking the wealthy or the capitalist system since I fully intend to
be a filthy rich capitalist someday myself. As things are now, that is
possible only if an innovator can partner with one of the rare honest
businessmen or is willing to compromise principles and let a crook in on the
deal. It is barely possible (don’t hold your breath) that this government
might be willing to do something about the problem. But recall the junk bonds
again, cases drag on for years before the crooks are behind bars. I want to
smash them NOW where it really counts - in their wallets. If you are one of
the people at the edge of this problem, do your own risk assessment based on
your personal situation. Contact the Reform Party or the justice department
(or both) if you think you can cut a deal.
Do you recall the DOW 8000 with people telling you it could go higher (and it
did) ? Do you recall how at the peak they panicked you by saying it should be
much lower ? Do you recall at the crash last Monday how you were told it would
fall to 6000 due to a slowing economy, currency instability, and continuing
inflationary pressures ? Did you notice how Hong Kong crashed so conveniently
while the Chinese were here ? To the American people I point out that after
that big fall yet again in Hong Kong today you were supposed to panic, with a
market whose total value is measured in billions wagging markets worth
trillions. Are there any more wolves out there willing to take off your fleecy
disguise ? Would you investors rather be predators, or prey ? I call upon you
to contact the President and Congress with stories telling how the market hurt
you. To the media I say again, why are you pimps ? At least ONE of you could
have been the dog that barked in the night.
In 1982 there was a small oil well wireline logging company named NL
Industries/McCullough. I call upon all the oil industry to tell why
Schlumberger is so successful.
In 1986 there was a growing Fortune 500 computer manufacturer called Datapoint
which made the only token passing star topology networks because it held the
patents on the technology. It had an installed Fortune 500 customer base of
thousands of networks and tens of thousands of computers. It had problems with
stock manipulation by insiders, but it also had a very fat product research
pipeline about to start flowing very serious competition into the market based
on the Intel microprocessors. It was taken over by an arbitrageur named Asher
Edelman, who fired all the people needed to keep the company alive and
prospering. The company is now effectively dead. I call upon the government to
determine what role major computer system manufacturers (I do not know enough
to name them) played in this destruction of competition. I call upon the
thousands of other former employees and the customers of Datapoint to tell
Congress and the President how you too suffered.
I call upon all the former employees and customers of Atari to tell how the
Atari ST was exterminated.
In 1986 there was a computer called the Commodore Amiga 1000 manufactured by
Commodore Business Machines. It used the Motorola 68000 microprocessor and
could have up to 8 megabytes of memory. It had an open operating system called
Workbench, AmigaDOS, and Intuition. It had the ONLY Genlock for connecting a
VCR to a computer. It also did audio sampling. It was a true multitasking
machine, with multiple programs able to run in different windows
*simultaneously*. There were a few hundred to a few thousand third party
vendors making Amiga compatible products as the popularity of the machine
increased. Several later machines were produced, but CBM was systematically
strangled in spite of the loyalty of millions of customers around the world,
who are loyal TO THIS DAY. When the bankrupt company was purchased, its new
owners were strangled too. I now ask the current owners Gateway 2000 whether
it is your intention to kill the Amiga forever, or will you let yourself be
strangled as well ? In 1986 Freedom Computing Publications Hotdisk was my
feeble attempt to start a third party business. It never got off the ground
due to my ineptness and lack of capital. But not long afterwards others took
up the idea which I freely offered, with the consequence that computer
diskette publishing is a thriving industry. I call upon millions around the
world to tell what you think of the IBM/ Intel/ Microsoft troika.
I call upon every single person in America who has no job and no unemployment
compensation to contact your government asking why you are not counted in the
government statistic for unemployment.
I call upon every person in America who had to change a job because yours moved
overseas to contact your government.
Congress - you have Bill Gates in front of you today. Do you have the guts to
ask him if there is anything he would like to confess ? If you want to ask me
anything, post your question on newsgroup misc.invest.martketplace so that all
America can see it. I am sure that they too would be interested in the
answers. Information is the lifeblood of our modern economy. I call upon
America to tell Congress that regulating and restricting data security is like
slashing America’s wrists.
I ask the thousands of recruiters who have never passed me on for an interview
during the past seven years - Is it really because you instinctively dislike
me ? Is it because I demanded “interesting work, reasonable compensation, a
comfortable office, and no hassle” ? Or is there some other reason one of you
would like to bring into the light of day ? Do not email me, post it on this
newsgroup. I doubt that you will suffer any retaliation.
Twenty thousand hours of computer strategy game playing ought to be worth
something. An avalanche can start with a single pebble. Am I still “mostly
harmless” ? Do not invade my privacy. Not a one of you has earned it until you
clean up America.
