Hi

As an avid Bounty Bob fan I've just come across a german language site
(http://www.skill42.de/makl/miner.htm) which mentions another game by Bill
Hogue staring Bob called Scraper Caper. The scanned flier states it was
available for the 5200 and all Atari home computers.

I guess this never made it to the UK, did it ever really exist ?

.atr anyone ? (or even better a mint original boxed copy for sale ;) )

Bye

Paul

I saw ads for "Scraper Caper" in Analog etc., but I was never able to get or
even see the actual game, even in the US...

Was it ever released?

Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.

As far as anyone's been able to determine, no. It may or may not have
been worked on, but the rumor is Bill just packed it all up at some
point, and Scraper Caper was no more.

I wonder if anyone ever found Bill to ask him this simple question. I feel
an email to the giant programmers list coming on.

As long as you remember them they will always be with you..

Damn, I saw a page with Bill's email address listed and now I cant remember
where !

(It may not be his CURRENT email address of course. I think the page had
something to do with the TRS80... I'll have a look through my browser
cache.)

how to ask the way to the train station !)

That site also has screen shots of all the Bounty Bob Strikes Back levels and a
final screen stating that on the C64 version you could enter a number (1-25) in
the adjustment screen special code and then press "F7." to play any level. Does
the A8 version provide 68100 Option F info in the same maner?

Once it's finished, I do believe you can play any level.

It sure does. Thanks to Jindrich for reminding me of the following :

OK, there are some other simple cheats, but the "Big one" is this:
Go to the Options screen (with "Option" :-), and using your joystick,
set "special code" to 61800 (This takes a while, but it's worth it).
This only works immediately after starting the game!

Now hold down the letter "f" key and press OPTION again. So that's
F and OPTION together. It seems as if nothing has happened, but in
the game, you can use the following keys:

- Q : Advance one level
- A : Decrease one level
- B : original position
- Z : Same level again
- F : Float mode on: This one's great: If things get too hard or
impossible to play, just press F and float your way around the
screen.

How to jump to higher levels:
>From 1 (Bob's morning calisthenics) to 4: get the flower pot,
then press "1" and "START".

>From 2 (utility hoist) to 22: kill the mutants, get the paint roller
and then press "3" and "START".

>From 3 (suction tubes) to 15: get the goblet then press "4" and "START".

>From 5 (jumping 101) to 8: get the coffee pot, then press "8" and "START".

>From 10 (gravity lift) to 14, get the pitchfork and then press "5"
and "START".

>From 16 (Advanced Suction Tubes) to 19: turn arrow in suction tube #1
to the left, get the pie and then press "9" and "START".

I remember that there were other codes too. You could give him a haircut
(remove his hat) and other cool stuff. If anyone remembers the codes please
let me know.

I remember when I first found the messages hidden in Bounty Bob. I
was intrigued to say the least. A buddy of mine who was a big time
hacker/cracker was convinced that one of the codes would probably dump
the game to disk. Don't know why he thought that but I was always
willing to entertain the idea.

Here's the codes I found over the years. Simply enter these numbers
and press "OPTION".

5
6
49
69
100
213
666
782
818
1000
2049
6861

One of these numbers gives you the "haircut message" and when you
start the game, Bounty Bob has no hat.

I never had time to go through all the numbers. I've always talked
about trying to start a Bounty Bob project where we could get a bunch
of people together to try different sets of numbers. That way it
would get done a lot faster. If anyone's interested in doing this,
email me. The only thing that concerns me is that I never would have
thought to hold down another key while pressing option. I wonder how
the 61800 code was found. I would think it must have come from Bill
Hogue himself.

Interestingly, the numbers listed above also work on the 5200 version,
except for number 1000. I wonder if 61800 works on the 5200 as well?

There's a web site that can automaticaly translate for you. It's called
SYSTRAN. It's URL is:

http://www.systransoft.com/

You provide the URL of the web site you want to translate and select the
from/to languages.

Here's what it translate it to:

The follow-up play of Bill Hogue: Scraper Caper

After the enormous success of the Miner 2049'er and Bounty Bob strikes bake
made itself Bill Hogue to a new play named Scraper Caper. Roughly described
tried Bounty Bob probably as a feuerwehrmann and rushes about naturally again
Yukon Yohan:) Appeared it never officially, a Previewversion is it to however
naturally give:)

Thank you at Nickolas Marentes for the picture!

Reply to my enquiry to Bill Hogue follows :

Paul,

Thanks for the kind words about Bounty Bob. It's really neat that there are
so many people around that have fond memories of my old games.

Scraper Caper was supposed to be our next game after Miner 2049er. We had a
lot of success with Miner and ended up licensing it for just about every
computer that existed at the time. This put a lot of pressure on us to come
up with something that was incredible and could duplicate Miner's
popularity.

Our first cut had Bounty Bob at the base of a high-rise building on fire.
He had gotten work as a fireman after finally getting out of the mines. (He
had also slimmed down, if I remember!) The concept would have had the
player controlling him throughout this building in search of people to
rescue or items to save.

We had a large part of it programmed but it never seemed to go anywhere so
we abandoned it. We started another totally different game that had Bounty
Bob on this 3-D style maze with angry little fireballs after him. I spent a
ton of time getting the look right so that Bounty Bob and the little
fireballs would move in and out around the playfield correctly. What we
ended up producing was a stunning looking screen masking dull game play.

So we finally chose to do what we should have done in the first place: make
a really cool sequel to Miner 2049er and put Bounty Bob back in the mine.
We had a tremendous amount of fun coming up with all the new levels and
contraptions.

It's too bad but whatever code that existed for Scraper Caper I or II no
longer exists. There might be some videotape somewhere. Maybe I'll try to
find it one day and make it into a movie.

Thanks for your letter, Paul.

I'M NOT WORTHY!!! That is so cool! You know Bill Hogue's programming
predates the atari, I have a few of his games for my 1978 TRS-80 model 1. I
think the ones I have were written around '79, titles would include- 'meteor
mission 1&2','Robot Attack'- which had digitized speech samples that would
holler at you" PLAYER ONE" and "GAME OVER PLAYER ONE", also there was
'Galaxy Invasion', and 'Invasion Force'. Even by todays standards these
still have excellent gameplay.

Thanks for sharing that response you got from Bill Hogue.

I was a huge fan of his when Big 5 produced TRS-80 games. I considered
his games were the best games ever produced on the TRS-80. Meteor Mission
was my favorite game.

The first game that Big 5 produced was Super Nova. A asteroids style game.

You compare Super Nova to his later releases, the programming and graphics
done significantly got better and better.

I sure hope he can find that tape!!

This is interesting. Did a search on Google.com for Miner 2049er and found a
Atari easter egg list for Atari's. They had some of the cheats for the 5200
version of Miner 2049er. Here is what they had:

Area select:

Begin game play and jump on the first platform. Place Bounty Bob in a
position where no opponents can touch him without pausing game play.
Hold Top-Fire and press 2, 1, 3, 7, 8, 2, 6, 8, 6, 1. The level will
restart to confirm correct code entry. Press Reset followed by a
number that corresponds to the desired zone. Note: Press 0 for zone
10. Then, hold Top-Fire and press a number that corresponds to the
desired station.

Unlimited lives:

Enable the "Area select" code. After losing a life, immediately warp
to another station to keep your current number of lives.

They have all kinds of other easter eggs for Atari systems. Here's the link:
