I'm baffled by this one. Anyone have any ideas as to why such a high sale
price?

Bidding got carried away. I had some cards a few years ago that went
for 100 times what I figured they would go for.

Rare is it that something like that is a good investment over its
original retail price. Woah.

People really can get carried away, I've seen it in other things so I'm
not surprised that it happens in auctions. They get lost in the bidding,
forgetting that there should be a limit on what they will pay, forgetting
that for many items, there will be other chances. Of course, it actually
requires two people to be in that frame of mind, or else the bidding would
stop much earlier.

It's not just "rare" or "retro" items. I've seen lots of auctions with
idiotic prices (both the reserve and the current bid) for items that are
still available in store chains at normal prices or even on sale. :o\

Unless, of course, it's two people working together to generate cash via insurance scamming. I wouldn't ever condone such a thing, naturally, but you can't rule it out either.

Akalabeth - for Apple II by Lord British aka Richard Garriott, creator of
Ultima

Item condition: --
Ended: Jun 11, 201219:17:45 PDT
Winning bid:
US $1,285.13 [ 27 bids ]
Shipping:
$15.00 UPS Ground
Item location: Studio City, CA, United States

Akalabeth was Richard Garriott's first commercial game, the one which
inspired the Ultima series.

Disk is in excellent condition, some adhesive seepage is visible through
disk label, typical of floppies from this era. Game boots perfectly.

Manual is in excellent condition, no markings or stains, a few slight
creases.

Original plastic baggie packaging shows wear, baggie and paper cover insert
have a horizontal fold at the top 1/3 area.

Makes me wonder what my original Ultima game (distributed by Top of
the Orchard in a baggie) might be worth... I should check and see if
it is still bootable...
