Is it possible to transfer characters from Bard's Tale II on the IIgs
to Bard's Tale III on the Apple IIe? I loaded up BT3 on the IIgs and
told it to transfer the characters, but it didn't seem to recognize the
BT2 character disk. Are the two incompatible?

I've come to the conclusion that this is indeed impossible. I used the
IIgs version of BT2 to copy the character disk from a 3.5" disk to a
5.25" disk, and BT3 actually recognized it but all it saw was some
garbage characters with weird stats. I guess the IIgs version stores
the data in a different format. Odd considering Bill did both games...

Another, slightly more tedious way could be to rebuild your characters
with a character editor - in several issues of Hardcore Computist are
info tables and even complete programs to do this.

There's little about BT2 but a lot about BT3:

Infos: Issue 59 (p18,20,36), 61 (p32&33), 62 (p20) and several in issue
72.

Editor: Issue 64 (p 28) and errata in 66 (p7).

This method has the advantage of giving your party a monetary push as
well ;o)

Did they make a character editor for the Apple version of BT3?
Interesting...

I wonder if I would have the same problem transfering to the the 3.5"
disk version of BT3? Probably...

This is from memory so it might be faulty. IIRC, there was a company
called Golem Computers which had an ad in the back of various Apple II
magazines. They had Bards Tale, Wizardry, Wasteland, and a variety of
other editors. I think the guy ran the operation out of his basement,
it would be worth a shot to give that number a call and see if he's
still there.

He even claimed to have a BT III (GS version) editor even though the
game was never released.

Has a pre-release version of Bard Tale III GS ever shown up anywhere?
I loved the first two and would like to see what III was like, even if
it was never finished.

Wow, has it been 6 years since I asked this question? Time sure flies...

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone figured out how to do this or if someone has a BT 3 character editor I can use to recreate my characters.

Also, has anyone actually confirmed that the IIgs version of BT3 ever got to playable state? I know it was worked on, but was it mostly finished or almost done?

It's odd, I can't even find a character editor of any kind for any of the Bard's Tale games for the Apple II. I did find a forum where someone mentioned working on one but they did have it complete. Here's the link to that thread:

http://bardstale.brotherhood.de/talefiles/board/viewtopic.php?t=915&sid=3243a4a4ef53c82dc8e97a7167400dc8

and it's two and a half years old.

Well at least someone *was* working on it. I guess I'll have to do what I did last time, start over when I hit 3. Bleh.

Your other option would be to play the Apple II, not GS, version of Bard's Tale I or II, then import the characters into BT3. Or characters from Wizardry I-III or Ultima III-IV.

Yeah but that's no fun. The GS versions are really the best available. Shame 3 never got the GS treatment. :(
