I plan on doing a video about this upgrade but haven't been able to
get a number (even ballpark) on how many IIGS upgrades were made
(official upgrades by Apple dealers with baseboard, logos, and serial
number). Also, kind of a follow up: how to I decipher the serial
numbers of these units. Here's some examples:

E9261LLA2S6001
E7090NEA286001
E829TXRA2S6001
E7970A9A2S6001

Thanks.

I believe all of the upgrade kits came with ROM 0 boards, which means
that they will have a serial number lower than E704... And the
A2S6001 at the end is obviously the model number. Not sure how
helpful that information is...

My mistake. I'm seeing some ROM 01 boards as part of upgrade...

i have 3 of these units...gs/iie upgrades..and yeah they came with rev
0 boards or whatever but you had the option to upgrade them by sending
orig board in ..so all 3 are upgraded to rom 01 on my setups prob others
are too..but prob best to check if you get one

Mine is a ROM01. About 30% of the ROM00/01s I've come across have the
IIe pinouts pre-soldered so the upgrade board itself is quite common,
but I'm particularly interested in finding out approximately how many
IIGS upgrades were made.

The upgrade kit was still available in the dealer catalog for a short time after the ROM 01 began shipping. Even before it was discontinued, the upgrade boards were being used on the assembly line and as Apple service stock.

No idea on how many were made but I've seen estimates of around 5K for kits but that's lore -- I've never seen anything official. There were far more upgrade boards in the channel though, by the thousands.

The one I bought off ePay many moons ago is a ROM01. Also, I asked this in FB too, but does anyone have an upgrade that works with the original IIe case (the painted, II+ like case)? Mine only fits the later case.

No, you didn't tick me off/say anything wrong at all. :) I should
have replied to my own post, not yours.

I have no idea how to decipher the serial number but how about collecting all the numbers you can. Maybe when looking at a larger number, something will click.

My serial number is E70904A not counting the A2S6001 on the end

I bought an upgrade kit from Sun Remarketing maybe 20 or so years ago. I
think the bottom plate was one they had made for them, not one that Apple
would've shipped; it's brushed aluminum, and has no serial-number sticker.
No replacement badges were provided, so my lid still says "Apple IIe." A
ROM 01 motherboard was included, with power-supply and keyboard connectors
installed. At some point, I added a connector to plug in an external
keypad. I doubt that mine is the only IIe upgraded in this manner,
especially since the kit cost only about half what Apple used to charge.

i can never quite figure out why someone has not already just scan'd the
bottom plate (metal) or i suppose you could make it out of heavy
plastic........................the bottom plate i mean....with 3d
printers etc make a prototype and just go to a metal shop and stamp them
out..i'm sure some folks would buy them...make a cheap upgrade //gs
sticker for it for the cpu in front

anyway
