From reading the FAQs I have also not been able to work out a way of
getting SHK files sitting on my Mac into Sweet16 without needing a PC
or a real Apple II. I have ShrinkIt on Sweet16 so extracting the file
is OK, I just need to get them mounted someway.
Any ideas?

nulib2 can extract .po from .sdk.

OK, let's not get too technical. I want to stay within the GUI of Mac
OS 10.6.

I was going to suggest creating a disk image that is HFS formatted,
opening it into the OS X Finder, copying files, then opening it with
System 6.0.1 and Sweet 16. But HFS is read only in 10.6.
I use a program called ADFS. It's rather old and hasn't been updated in
years, but effectively, it will enable you to copy items from your HFS+
formatted volume to a ProDOS formatted disk image.
I've found it still works with Leopard and Snow Leopard on Intel Macs
(you'll need to have Rosetta installed), although drag and drop copying
has stopped working - you'll need to use the 'File' pull down menu from
within ADFS to specify copying files over.
The download link is here:

You can also download a Universal binary of the application, but I
found it didn't work at all for me with Leopard and Snow Leopard:

ADFS is fairly buggy and it's caused problems for some of my disk
images in the past by corrupting them. When using it, it's best to
simply copy over the files and not to do too much else (creating
folders, deleting files & folders, etc) and always remember to quit
ADFS before then using that disk image with an emulator - NEVER have
the disk image open in both ADFS and KEGS or Sweet 16 at the same time!

On Mac OS X 10.5 I use AppleCommander to copy the SHK file to a disk
image. IIRC, the file/aux type is $E0/$8002 for ShrinkIt.

I'd be interested in hearing how it works on Mac OS X 10.6. As I haven't
tested it, I'd urge you to work with a backup image.

My preferred solution is to use the emulator Virtual II. I did have to
buy a full license version of this program to get the full feature
set, but it's worth it for the number of unique features in this
emulator, which also include an easy to use solution to your problem.
From within Virtual II, you can point to a folder in the Mac
environment whose contents will be mounted as if they were a prodos
volume by the virtual apple ii. VII's mounting features shouldn't be
blocked by OS 10.6, either. I think it's using its own custom
mechanisms. So if you got a SHK file from the internet, you drop it in
the folder, then boot virtual ii, mount that folder in the apple ii
environment, then use any apple ii copy program you like to copy the
SHK file onto a .dsk or .po or 2.mg file or whatever. From there,
obviously you can mount that disk image in sweet16 and get at the
files you copied. None of this requires hacking, command lines or
leaving GUIs behind, if you're not a fan of such things.

Once it's back, I hope it won't take long to finish up.

With very limited testing on 10.6.3, Apple Commander works a treat and
is exactly what I have been looking for.

This is great John! I'd used a version of Apple Commander from 2008,
but it seemed a little unstable and would crash on OS X more than
ADFS.
Just testing the current version on my work machine with MacOS X
10.6.3, it's as solid as a rock. Love the option to specify file type
on import! Would love it even more if you could select all the files
in the Import Wizard and specify that they all have a specific file
type, instead of having to do it one by one.

I'm still having trouble on Mac OS X getting the right combination of
SWT libraries and Apple's Java application launcher stub.

Ah, my SWT-fu is weak, and the Swing port has languished. I confess I
use the command line for multiple imports.

Excellent!
