I recently installed a more complete copy of GS/OS on the Microdrive.
Originally, I did a default "Easy" installation. Now, when I boot, I
get an error. The GUI starts loading and then a solid blue screen
appears with the following text:

"The selected Appletalk connection could not be found. Be sure it is
installed and the slot settings in the Control Panel are correct."

I hit ENTER and the GUI finishes booting.

Since I don't need to use Appletalk, I trashed all of the Appletalk
related files in several system folders. I still get the error on
boot.

I do want to keep the DC.Printer control panel, Epson driver and
Laserwriter driver. Do these use Appletalk somehow, even when directly
connected (or not all)?

I Googled the FAQs and the web, but didn't find anything helpful.
Solutions most welcome :-)

DC.Printer and Epson driver don't. LaserWriter sort of requires
AppleTalk but in principle should work for local Postscript file output
(via a keyboard shortcut, IIRC) without AppleTalk drivers.

The file you need to get rid of is System:Drivers:SCC.Manager,
which is the serial port arbitration driver used by AppleTalk. It is the
one displaying the error message. You don't need it if you aren't using
AppleTalk.

Thank you. The description of the SCC.Manager driver that I read
didn't clue me in to it being part of Appletalk. That's the only one I
didn't trash. And yes, the reason for wanting the Laserwriter driver
is for the Postscript capture.

The other reason that error could rear itself is if you somehow
managed to get the BRAM bit that sets AppleTalk to look for a card
instead of the inbuilt ROM/slot selection.

the only real way I know for laypersons to clear that is the Option
key on reboot and reset BRAM/60(50)Hz.
