First I have G4 and LC475 Mac. Not Windows PC. So Ciderpress is not my
option.

Okay, then, I want to convert 2mg files to real IIgs 3.5" 800k
diskettes on my Mac.
I can use my LC475 or G4 MacOSX with USD FDD. I think my hardwares are
enough for this job. The problem is software. (I have IIgs with all
types of FDDs and SCSI HDD.)

What do you think is better hardware and what program exactly should I
use to do this job?
If I can convert 2mg directly to 800k 3.5" (via USB FDD) just with one
click on my MacOSX, It'd be the best choice. But, if this is
impossible, I can use my old LC475.

I tried an Apple II image converting utility for 68K called 'imageutil
(68k)' on my LC475 and it just works very well. imageutil converts 2mg
to DiskCopy 4.2 format and I can put the DiskCopy image to 3.5" 800k
diskette using DiskCopy 4.2 on LC475.

But some images can not be converted by imageutil. And what I exactly
need is just 'one-click' solution, without intermediate converting
works. Directly from 2mg to 800k 3.5" on both of old macs and MacOSX.

I'm sure someone else can tell you for sure if you can do this with
just "one-click," but...

My Gut Reaction is that the hardware you have will be a problem. Here's
why:

1. I don't think the USB floppy drives can do an 800k prodos disk.Of
this I'm almost certain.

2. I don't think the second-generation of built-in floppy drives (the
ones with the manual eject button) do a very good job with ProDOS 800k
disks either. Now I know I've read that some people have had good luck,
and that others could never get a working disk - this suggests that
some drives are just luckier than others, I guess.

Now then. You say you have a GS with a SCSI card. You also say you have
a modern Macintosh with USB. Here's what I would do:

1. Buy a USB ZIP drive an a SCSI ZIP drive. The USB drive runs about
$50 new, or less than $20 on ebay. The SCSI zip drive is less than $10
on ebay. Buy some blank ZIP disks - they still sell these new at office
supply stores and CompUSA.

2. Attach the USB drive to the G4 and the SCSI zip drive to the GS.

3. I'm assuming you have GS/OS 6.01 running on a SCSI hard drive. If
true, then install the FST to allow GS/OS to read either HFS (macintosh
formatted) or MS-DOS Fat (PC formatted) floppy and zip disks directly
from the GS/OS finder.

4. Download the 2mg file on your G4 and copy it to the Zip disk via OS
X's Finder, as normal. Eject the zip disk.

5. Insert the Zip disk into the GS's SCSI zip drive. It appears in the
GS/OS finder.

6. Insert a formatted 800k 3.5" floppy in the GS's disk drive.

7. Use DiskMaker8 or some other utility to convert the 2MG (or any
other disk file you have) directly from the Zip disk.

I think this is also probably the most reliable way to make Apple II
disks as well, PLUS you can make 5.25" disks as well.

Also, I am *pretty sure* you could use the Mac LC and a second SCSI ZIP
drive instead. Install the FST to allow the Mac to read and write
ProDOS formatted zip disks. Then format the ZIP drive via ProDOS and
use the LC to write 2mg files directly to the ProDOS Zip disk, and then
stick that into the GS's Zip drive.

I'm sure someone will say if I'm totally off track. These days I just
use high-density floppys, CiderPress, and my SuperDrive Controller card
to do this stuff...

Your G4 is not useful in this scenario. It cannot successfully write
to an 800k disk. You need to use the LC. DiskDup+ will write a
DiskCopy image to a ProDOS-compatible floppy; don't bother trying to
use DiskCopy itself.

If you have a USB to serial converter, you can go the ADTPro route to
transfer the .2MG directly to the IIgs' disk drive from the G4.

Well, you can use ADTPro program which is working fine under Tiger OSX
10.4.7.

Take a Look at :

http://sourceforge.net/projects/adtpro

and this french internet page that i wrote :

http://site.voila.fr/ressources-apple2/adtpro/adtpro.html

It's a great program which is working fine with my PowerMac G4 and my
// GS rom 03.
Now, i can transfer many disks images with this method.

Best regards from France to the author, David Schmidt.

David,

To verify, OS 10.0 or greater is needed for ADTPro and a Mac? Or
would the Java runtime with earlier OSes like 8.6 work ok?

Also, what would one run on the IIgs side?

Thank you,

The criteria for a host computer are Java (swing) and support from the
rxtx.org library. So, that equates to Java 1.1 or greater for the Java
side. On the rxtx Mac OS side, it looks like they only support OS X.
So 8.6 isn't going to work.

ADTPro has a client side that runs on the IIgs. It ships as a .dsk
image that has to get to the IIgs somehow - (chicken and egg, anyone?)
but the original ADT or ADTgs can get the disk image down there. I
talk about it a little on the bootstrap section of the ADTPro page
(http://adtpro.sourceforge.net/bootstrap.html). You can use the
built-in modem port if you have the appropriate cabling. You can also
use a Super Serial Card if you want to be more conventional.

Oh, yeahhhs~

I've got the point here.

1) If I can transfer 2mg to IIgs, then I can use DiskMaker8 to convert
2mg directly in IIgs machine. (To do this job, SCSI removables are
required. Okay. I have the equipments.)

2) If I can use old mac like LC475, I can put 2mg into LC, and DiskDup+
will convert 2mg directly to real 800k 3.5".

3) Yes! I have kayspan USB-serial adapter. So I can use ADTPro to
transfer 2mg directly to IIgs through serial cable.

I think No. 3 method would be most convenient these days. I'll try it
today and will report again. Thanks all!

When I try to run ADTPro Server on my Mac, using Keyspan USB to Serial
adapter for serial connection to IIgs, after following all instructions
for installation, I got this message:

"Selected port is in use."

I set up the port to /dev/tty.USA28X5b15P2.2 and then clicked the
Connect button. But it does not seem to connect well..

Is there anybody who uses Keyspan USB-Serial adapter without this
problem?

Ah yes, on OSX you need to run a little script to fix permissions on
the port. I neglected to add it to the distribution (next drop will
have it):

!/bin/sh #
curruser=`sudo id -p | grep 'login' | sed 's/login.//'`
echo $curruser

if [ ! -d /var/lock ]
then
sudo mkdir /var/lock
fi

sudo chgrp uucp /var/lock
sudo chmod 775 /var/lock
if [ ! `sudo niutil -readprop / /groups/uucp users | grep $curruser
> /dev/null` ]
then
sudo niutil -mergeprop / /groups/uucp users $curruser
fi
exit 0;

Hi, I think you may be David.
Thank you very much for your help!
You helped me at Sourceforge.net ADTPro forum, too.

https://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=582337

I hope this great program be more perfect and useful to those ADT
enthusiasts.
I'll keep up with this program continuously.

You're quite welcome. I had trouble getting the linefeeds/newlines
straight in the fixperms.sh shell script, but it should be all
straightened out in the v0.0.8 release available now.

What I did to get stuff from the Internet to my IIGS was to burn the
stuff to CD and put it in my Color Classic. Share the drive and copy
them to the IIGS via AppleTalk. You should be able to connect the
computers up that way. I have a IIGS and a PowerMac that connect in
the office.

No need to mess with floppies. The AppleTalk kits are out there and
pretty reasonable.
