I am interested in some advice about how to get my Apple IIgs on the
Internet. I am aware of products such as the Uther Apple II Ethernet
card by a2RetroSystems. However, I am hoping to be able to connect my
Apple IIgs to a PC via a null modem cable and use the PC as a serial
to Ethernet bridge if you will. I was able to do this with my Mac Plus
and is worked quite well, but I was using a Performa 450 and
IPNetRouter as the bridge. In this case, I am hoping to use a PC, I
just can't seem to put the right key words together to get anything
real meaningful out of Google. Your advice is appreciated.

Matt is spot on, Marinetti is what you need. However, there are some
caveats to be aware of. Andrew Roughan has implemented some
functionality into Marinetti that allows you to use the "Direct Cable
Connection" functionality built into Windows 9x. However, it would
seem that Microsoft in its infinite wisdom changed the way things work
with direct cable connections running under Windows XP (and possibly
Windows 2000 - I'm not 100% sure about this). I did some testing some
time ago and was unable to make a connection using Windows XP. There
are guides for setting up the connection using Windows 9x in JuicedGS
(I don't remember which edition).
If you do happen to get it working with Windows XP, please let us all
know how you did it. ;-)

They introduced something obnoxious into the port polling with one of the XP
service packs. It raises hell with things like parallel port attached EPROM
programmers also.
Try this registry hack:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\Parport\Parameter
"DisableWarmPoll"=dword:00000001
Also try disabling plug-n-play support for the parallel port in the windows
device settings.

The problem you outlined may have contributed to the problem (not
sure), but it seemed that the "protocol" used for the hand shaking
phase of a "Direct Cable Connection" changed somewhat between Windows
9x and Windows XP. IIRC, I managed to eventually get past the hand
shaking by using trial and error, but even once the link was
established it refused to play ball.
I did all this some time ago, so I'm a bit foggy on the details, but I
gave up after numerous attempts.
I might look into the polling you mention and see if it may have had
some bearing on my failures. If it seems likely I might give it
another go. I've still yet to get Marinetti working on my IIgs.

See articles in Juiced GS magazine v9.4 and v10.1 for more
information and a semi tutorial for how to get DCC working to
support a connection with the IIgs.
Implementation of MS-CHAPv1 is complete in Scripted PPP
Link Layer v1.3d4 and later and in PPP Link Layer v1.3d6 and later.
The Sourceforge tracket states that this has been tested with Windows
95 and 98SE only.
However, I know I did some testing with Windows Server 2000 and
perhaps that works too.
It has been some time since I looked into it, so my memory is flakey,
but later versions of windows
probably require different authentication protocols ie MS-CHAPv2
I was looking into support for MS-CHAPv2, however it requires an
implementation of MD-2 and that doesn't exist yet.

I just pulled the code into Orca/C and with some minor tweaking, got
it to compile. I haven't tested the code any further, but it is
looking promising. I assume you could link the compiled code with
Marinetti somehow? I'm not familiar with Merlin, but I would have
thought it would be fairly simple.
Let me know if you want some help. I'm an experienced C programmer,
but my 65816 assembly is next to non-existent.

The correct place for this is Geoff Weiss' Hashtool toolset.
I've passed it to him to see if he will integrate it.
As Hashtool is written with Orca/M it will probably be very easy.
While you are in the mood for porting, perhaps you'd like to look at
doing a similar effort with SHA-1?
