SLIP, serial.device, and 28,800 bps connections

My internet provider recently upgraded its SLIP modem pool to 28.8 kbps, which
is nice; not so nice is that I can't seem to get a 28.8 kbps SLIP connection
to work on my Amiga 2500. I'm using the internal serial port. Connections at
14.4 kbps work fine, but anything over that fails -- either the serial port
just fails to communicate at all with the modem, or AmiTCP (version 4.0 demo)
cannot get rhcslip.device to connect through the serial connection. I've
tried several alternatives to the CBM standard serial.device found in KS/WB
3.1 (artser.device, BaudBandit.device, 8n1.device, v34serial.device) without
success. Using these device drivers, the modem is able to make a high speed
connection with the other modem (indeed, ordinary terminal programs seem to
work just fine at 28.8 kbps), but AmiTCP cannot seem to get rhcslip.device to
work on the connection -- I cannot get any TCP/IP program to work, including a
ping to the machine to which I have the modem connection.

I've checked all the settings in my Arexx dialer scripts and startnet script
and I don't think I've missed anything there. Any help greatly appreciated.
I've been able to use this modem on my Bridgeboard to make a 28.8 kbps SLIP
connection using Trumpet Winsock and Netscape, so the problem has to be
something in my Amiga software setup. Many thanks for your patience and any
help that might be offered.

There's your problem. The internal serial port can not handle very
high speed communications. The chip has only a one-byte buffer, so it
is likely to drop characters whenever it gets a large amount of data.

To solve the problem, get a serial card. The GVP ioExtender works
well. It has been picked up by another company even though GVP went
belly-up. The 2232 does not work well. The stock version can handle
only 9600bps. Anything else would be better than the internal port.

Meanwhile, configure the system for a slower speed.

Hmm...

Have you tried using the modem with Terminal emmulation SW ie TERM and
logging on to a LOCAL BBS. See what speeds you connect to and if that
works OK.

If not then it would well be that you need to configure handshaking
(ie try a better cable)...

If that dosn't work then it could be the serial chip...

Well, i run 56700bps CSLIP from stock A1200 to A4000, on a 15m. 3wire cable!
i NEVER! have had any problems with data loss.

I also have run a USR COURIER 16800 / serial 56700bps on A500,
and i have a freind runnning USR ROBOTICS 36.6K / 56700 bps on stock A3000
without any problems.

So, I wouldn't actually RUSH out getting a serial card, check ALL other possible
errors first, perhaps, upgrade to one of the "hack" versions of serial.device ?

I had exactly the same problem. Turned out (thanks to Holger Kruse for
pointing it out) that the problem was the amount of DMA capacity being used.
Solution: reduce the strain on the DMA chips. Reduce the depth/overscan of
your workbench, get an IO Expander card or (as in my case) a graphics board.
It was an expensive way to speed up the serial port but it brought some other
benefits with it :-)
