What sort of solvent, etc. is best to use to clean an Amiga case? A500
is the unit in question here -- a little grime around the slats and on
some keys. Fantastic? Formula 409? Just damp cloth?

Thanks. Don't want to melt any plastic here.

Use those screencleaner swabs or soap water on a damp cloth.

Something that works great to clean computer equipment is the blue
window cleaner stuff. In Holland it's called "Glassex". It comes in one
of these bottles with a spraygun as a cap. I'm sure you can find an
equivalent in your area. Maybe you've even got it in the cupboard.

Cheers,

Do you know what most commercial computer cleaners are? The ones that come
in the aerosol cans and cost a lot of money? The ones used by computer
companies to clean computer cases?

Dow Bathroom Cleaner with "Scrubbing Bubbles".

It's true. The companies that sell the commercial aerosol cleaners buy the
stuff in bulk, from Dow, and sell it in their own packaging. The stuff
works incredibly well, especially cigarette-stained cases.

I use Foamclene anti-static foam cleaner for cleaning just about everything
computer related - case, monitor etc. For cleaning two years of crap off my
keyboard though, I found the only way forward was to pop all the caps off
and wash them in soapy water. And no, mum, I'm not going to clean more
often, once every two years is more than enough ;-)

Windex, if you live in the USA.
Otherwise, an ammonia-based cleaner will work wonders. AFAIK it doesn't
melt the plastic. If in doubt, flip the case over and scrub a spot on a
corner out of view. :)

Windex/ammonia is also "the nuts" for cleaning off cigarette stains.
Had to clean my car of about 6 years of accumulated yellow creeping
crud. Works wonders. :)

I use rubbing alcohol (dilute iso-propanol) and a cotton swab.

Depends on how filthy it is. If it's not too bad, try Windex with a
terrycloth washcloth or small towel first (something with some deep nap to
it). If you use paper towel or kleenex you're going to end up with little
shreds of paper all over the place.

If it's worse and Windex won't cut it, then use good ol' 409. I've 409d my
machines dozens of times. I would not use it on a monitor screen though as
it could remove coatings and leave streaks.

Those little tear open hand-i-wipe things don't do squat for me. If you
smoke, 409 is the best thing to clean off that film of yellow crud and see
what the computer used to look like when it was new. It won't harm
anything.

I use Flux remover for PC boards. Cleans everything I've thrown it at.
Take the grungiest keyboard you've ever seen, and it'll look showroom new
after using this stuff.

Use a cloth just dampened with window cleaner or other gentle household
cleaner. Or add a few drops of dish detergent to 100ml of alcohol
(methylated spirits). DO NOT over do the detergent. A few drops does not
mean a few squirts. And if it's possible to squeeze liquid out of the
cloth, you have wetted it too much.

Fantastik is awesome for cleaning keyboards. Lay 1 or 2 paper towels over
the keyboard and spray fantastik on top. Make sure it is a generous amount.
Let it sit for about 1-2 minutes. Start wiping. You'll have a keyboard
that looks pretty much brand new after that.

Oh yeah, make sure your a500 is off first ;)
