Is anyone interested in a game competition for August? I'm still working a
lot so I'd prefer to play a game where we can compare scores and discuss
levels - RoboCod was a great example of such a game. Anyone feel like some
competiton?
BTW - if you haven't played the Amiga game 'Drip', I highly recommend it!
Check it out!

You gonna be around to back that challenge up, huh?! ;)
I'd be up for something along those lines - although I'm not very
competitive with other people.

Don't think I have, can you tell us anything about it?
All the best,
Angus Manwaring. (for e-mail remove ANTISPEM)
I need your memories for the Amiga Games Database: A collection of Amiga
Game reviews by Amiga players http://www.angusm.demon.co.uk/AGDB/AGDB.html
It's a very well done arcade game similar to Pac-Man but with a
different "bend". Instead of eating dots, you are moving along a pipe
trying to fulfill a condition to get to the next level; it's been a
while since I've played it so I had better load it up and try it.
Lots of folks seem to really like it on lemonamiga.com; perhaps this
would be a good game to try for this month's challenge? It's a very
appealing arcade game graphically in my opinion - I'd definitely
download it and give it a glimpse!
I hope to start getting more active in this newsgroup soon; I had
found a free newsgroup account that let me post as well as read
messages in this group but like most free read/write newsgroups, it
too disappeared. Guess I just need to use Google Groups from now on.
Had any new reviews lately Angus? I haven't written one in quite a
while; these reviews do come in handy!

Pkay, welllet us know - it sounds like good fun to me.

Well let us know how that goes, the 3rd samurai might be able to use the
info.

Its been pretty quiet, I'm hoping I can persuade Seppo to share his
thoughts on Carrier Command before 2020, but I may be being optimistic.
;)
By the way Nate, are you staying at a friend's place at the moment? :)

I tried the game a bit - I think the description above
is imho quite accurate. It plays quite well, too.

How compatible is Drip?
Is there a WHDLoad slave for the game?
How about another game for us to play over the same period?
A10? :)
At least we could get some first rate tuition.

Namely, you. As resident A10 maverick, top gun, if we get confused, you
are here to answer any questions etc.
Mind you, you may know the game too well to wish to do this, in that case,
Birds of Prey? Something else?

Well Carrier Command was set in 2166, so yeah okay - I'll go with 2012 if
you will. :)
Ahh I remember Carrier Command well. That one may be worth revisiting
some day. I enjoyed getting into that one; didn't have so much
success with Laser Squad but my mistake in that game was giving the
enemy targets of opportunity that they quickly took advantage of.
I haven't played A10 so I wouldn't mind checking it out, but as stated
above, we could try a different game if someone is too familiar with
it.
I managed to get a bunch of retro-computing in last night - but
nothing on the Amiga - just its 8-bit cousin the Commie 64. Now the
night before I did play the third iteration of the "Laser Disc" Dragon
Slayer arcade hit but quickly lost interest as I was unable to beat
the first screen...
Today I hope to try to exceed my high score in Drip - and I hope you
folks do as well - drum roll please...
After countless hours of 80's type arcade madness and mayhem, I have
achieved a score of...

51,500! Not too bad; I get very close to beating the score but it
seems very difficult to do so once you get close to 51k. Let me know
how it goes.
So A10 or Birds of Prey? I'm at a loss as to the reference to 2012 -
please enlighten me por favor! :-)
One game that I really want to play soon is Starflight II. I finished
Starflight I; this may be one of my favorite games of all time.
I have a show-shopping statement to drop here; one might have noticed
that in a post above, I signed as my pen-name of Nate Brazil (a
favorite character of mine from a SF book 'Midnight at the Well of
Souls' by the late Jack Chalker), but thanks to Google, my real name
has been revealed. I still go by Nate, but you can also call me
Chuck! The cat's out of the bag now..
Looking forward to seeing some Drip scores!
Chuck "Nate Brazil" S.
Never mind - now I got it!

First quarter, mind you! ;)
This is a horrible game! :)
Or to put it another way, I'm useless at it.
I can't even manage the first level, I just keep getting killed and
mistiming changes of direction.
I will keep trying and see if I can salvage some dignity. :)
Ok I'm going to try some A10 over the weekend and report back.
For the record, my high score in Drip stands at 91,000.
How you progressing Angus?

Couple of tips - use the firebutton to jump out of
danger. Also lookout for the powerup which allows
you to hover/fly.
My current Drip score: 103010

I have now played the sim a bit and had forgotten how difficult
it is to control the plane. ATM I am forced to use digital joystick
with it and it really needs a very delicate hand - especially if you
try to strafe tanks with the cannon. Level flight is also
challenging - you have to use a combination of the stick and
throttle and even then you have to keep a close look at the
altimeter. When turning you need to pull the stick to avoid
losing altitude. All these make low level attack runs quite...
interesting :)

Very good tips indeed! I've played this game for years - the
first time I played it I had downloaded it from a local BBS
on a 2400 baud modem!
I did not find out until last week that you can press the
fire button to jump from pipe to pipe. Silly me...

I suspect I won't be there for long :)

Few tips for the A10 are in order, then :)
First, if you can play the v1.5 of the game. It has
smoother graphics and more scenarios to try out.
Use mouse (or just keyboard) to play the game.
If you have a analog joystick, fine - but forget the
digital joystick with this sim. With it the controls
are very jerky and you end up in Frustration Land
in no time. Use rudder (not use if this is available
in the original version) and throttle to to make small
course and altitude corrections.
Use the missiles and smart bombs wherever possible.
The onboard Avenger cannon is a awesome weapon
but a bit tricky to use. Low altitude strafing runs are
very dangerous as there is literally no room for errors
- you quite easily end up "buying the farm" if you are not
careful.
Hope these help. Chocks away! :)

That's for damned sure. :)
One thing, this game loves my 060 and the framerate is great, especially
as I rememebr seeing the game running (wrong word) on an A500.
One touch I like particuarly is the ability to view all the vehicles. They
trundle on from the left, fire their weapon and trundle off to the right.
Nice touch.
I've tried with analaogue and digital sticks - I din't have a problem
flying with either, but with the digital I could not reliably fire my
main armament, it would just fire the Avenger cannon. I tried using the
keyboard equivalents but it was very hit and miss, and given the
aformentioned "interesting" effect of trying to fly at low level in this
game, one could certainly use something more precise. No problem with this
on the analogue stick - so far.

Ideally its version 1.5 you want Nate, right Seppo?

Not as well as that. :)
The best I've managed was 15000 and that was more luck than judgement. I
seem to be complete rubbish at this game. :)

I have been playing the game on my AmigaOne (using EUAE)
and the framerate is okayish if I use the default graphics
configuration.
I have to try it on my A1200/060 once I manage to solve my
problems with Amiga video (my current LCD monitor has some
problems showing it).

I think you can only fire the cannon with normal one-firebutton
Amiga joystick and need to use the keyboard to fire the missiles
and smart bombs.
I've been playing through the single missions - already completed the
three first ones. Should we compare scores on those? :)

Just hang in there, dude. Use the tips I wrote in
the other message. Use fire button to jump out
from danger, and use the powerup to hover/fly
(very handy to reach those hard-to-reach areas).
Bye,
Seppo
I agree; I'm playing this game on an emulator (I don't think my
particular Amiga 500 would handle this game very well)
and using keyboard/mouse controls can be pretty touchy.
I got this going using WHDLoad and it runs pretty smoothly,
until you try to shoot a tank. I've crashed three planes already!
:-P

I wonder how this would do on an Amiga 3000? I'm tempted
to pull this machine out of the closet and give it a try, but
I remember the graphics blinking furiously whenever I tried
to play a classic Amiga game on this machine. Any idea
what might cause the video to flicker so rampantly for
classic games? I'd love to put this machine into service if
I could figure out the graphics problem...

I wonder if there's some sort of USB joystick that one could use on a PC
platform with WinUAE that might give me some better control than
a keyboard and/or mouse... Anyone heard of such a setup?
I'd get an AmigaOne if I had more room in my basement... I have 4
machines in the 'computer room' - a TRS80 Color Computer 3,
a Commodore 128, a Windows 98 machine, and the A500. It's
an interactive museum!

Uh - not yet! :-) Unless you want to compare how many planes
you drove into the ground at 300 miles per hour! :-)
Any tips on shooting a tank with a MAV cannon? I'm trying to

Amiga hardware!

I gather some a re better than others, there was some discussion on EAB
about this.

No, there's a compatibility issue I think. I've tried with digital
joystick, keyboard and mouse, and I lose the ability to fire my
non-Avenger weapon after the first shot or so.
I've now plumbed in an analogue joystick which seems to work fine.
>I've been playing through the single missions - already completed the

Probably not. :)
With my control problems I've only just started a campaign, I sailed
through the training mission and was doing well on the city mission -
initially. I had some difficulty locating the abominable Atrium building
but after that had joined the Command post in downtown rubbleville,
flushed with my success I decided to take out the secondary, objective,
the enemy runway. Big mistake, I was brought back to earth, in a real
sense by a salvo of SAM missiles. I'll give it another go though, with a
bit of tactical thought (and AGM-65 input) it ought to be do-able.
As I went down in smoke and flames I thought I saw a Finnish pilot with
his undamaged A-10 being refuelled on the enemy runway, by what looked like
blonde Swedish girls in nurse's uniforms. "That's damned peculiar!" I
thought as my aircraft ploughed into the hillside. :-/

The thing is there's not a lot of visual indication of low altitude, so
you need to watch the gauge, and if you hear that audible warning - PULL
UP! I'm trying to be more disciplined, but its very easy to get carried
away in the moment.

The 3000 was ECS right, so it ought to be pretty compatible graphically
except with AGA games.... didn't it have an internal flicker fixer or
something? Was it using an 030, that ought to be great.
The other thing is there is a wealth of display options in A10, but it
sounds like something more hardware related IMHO.

Yes, you can buy a USB digital stick for about 10 quid from places like
Amigakit, but with A10 you have the option to use a PC analogue stick
anyway, which may suit you better.

I might win on that one. :)

You have the Maverick AGM-65 or the Avenger Cannon. You are supposed to
take out the first tank with the Maverick then later there's a tank
platoon you use your cannon on.
For the first one just find it on the map by cycling with the N key then
when you get close cut your speed with the 4 key, and shortly after your
HUD displays "LOCKED" release the Maverick. KABOOM! :)

That happens to all of us, I assure :)
A word of advice if I may - mark the tanks in the
map, then line up your A-10 to the target. When
they appear as targetting rectangles in the HUD
use the rudder controls to fine-tune your aim.
Now dive gently and start firing short bursts
just before the crosshairs and target rectangle
meets. Again use rudder controls to spread your
fire.
Don't try to take all tanks on one sweep. Pull up
early enough and do another attack run using
the same technique.

No idea, I would think WHDLoad should allow
this game to run perfectly under A3000. And
since it has a 68030 it is much better suited
to run A-10 than for example A500.

I've been wondering the same too - I am planning to buy a
cheap USB flight stick and try it (the EUAE on AmigaOne
should support it).

We can compete in those too - and I think I am way ahead of
you in that score :)

MAV is short from Maverick air-to-ground
missile. It is a fire-and-forget weapon Mark the
tank in the map screen and fly towards it. Once
you get a targetting rectangle and a word 'Locked'
appears in the HUD you can fire the missile and it
should hit the target.
For using the Avenger cannon see the tips I wrote
above. It takes a bit of practise to master the
cannon but it is well worth it.

Apparently many LCD/TFT monitors fail to produce Amiga
video - mine does show it but for some reason places it
so that upper 1/5 of the video is off-screen.

Strange, I have not experienced any combability issues yet -
but then, I play the game using mouse and keyboard.

Take out closest SAM of with a Maverick, fly in, release the Durandal
and continue flying away, launching chaff and flares as you
go.

Crap! Even the analaogue stick doesn't work with the game now. The 2md
fire button, whichever variany I use, just changes to external view
instead of launching the darned Mavericks now. :(
Did you say you were using emulation on your AmigaOne Seppo?
I maybe using WinUAE shortly. :(

I had hoped to have hunted down every possible target on the city mission,
and given you an unbeatable score, but apart frombeing absurdly
optimistic, see above.
BTW, in that mission, have you tried protecting the A10 that gets brought
down by a SAM at the start? I don't think you can save him, but its fun to
try.

Yes, the Amiga OS4 version of EUAE.It performs at
speed comparable to a A1200 with Fast RAM which
is good enough for most of the games. A-10 runs at
quite acceptable speed on it with the default game
graphical settings.

You might want to consider it this way - it is another
Amiga in your collection :)

I think it is part of the 'plot' of that mission. I guess
Dynamix tried to make each mission work like a scene
from "Top Gun" - take a mission, add some drama and
hopefully, a happy ending. In A-10, it is more than just
flying the mission - you're part of the play :)

I bet it runs faster and smoother still on your classic Amiga with
accelerator?

Maybe... I'm typing this on the pc, but its not taken over the primary
role yet. I'll be keeping an Amiga in the room, just trying to decide
which one.

A good way to look at it. Anyone use WinFellow? I stopped using it
a while back when it became quite clear that WinUAE handled the
emulation better, at least IMHO.

Maybe if I get the theme track to Top Gun and play it in the background
while running the first training mission, I'll have more luck! In any
event,
thanks for the tips - I'll give this another try this weekend.

Bye,

Well, I've been trying the game on the new (stinking) pc and I have to
say that I'm quite impressed with WinUAE's perfrmance, so far. It runs
as smoothly as on my 060, and now the fire button (on the mouse) work
correctly. And because its a new monitor I can see things very clearly.

The main Amiga is staying in support, and the pc is now in the main
position. Its quite a sad thing, but there are pros and cons.

Thanks, I`m using a newsreader called Gravity, and I think I`ve sorted
out _that_ problem now.

Ah, no I haven't - the text vanishes here!!! :(
Some more research is needed.
Anyway, I agree, they have put some good atmosphere into the game. I
managed to get 24000 points in the City mission, that Atrium building
can be tough to find!
Cheers.
I've not heard too much about WinFellow, but WinUAE seems pretty well
respected - not least here.

Angus and Nate.
You`s are going to

Hey, who says I'm not already old and grey?! :)
Anyway guys, has anybody knocked up a decent score for The City mission?
Don't be ashamed, you're not expected to be able to compete with the
Hogdriver. ;)
Angus.
Not yet - got extremely busy again. Looking forward to retirement so I can
concentrate on c.s.a.g. more. Hopefully the newsgroup is still around in a
few more years. (Like 22?)
Nate
I managed to get a score of 20000 in "The City" mission.
Anyone tried the other scenarios (Europe 2, Desert Storm) that come
with A-10 v1.5?
